I think the initial concept is flawed when you compared it to rocket artillery systems like the grad system, which can engage targets with a far more grater rate of fire, and quickly disengage.

+Ocodo mortars and rocket artillery are designed for different types of engagements due to their different angle of approach, this system is more suitable for enclosed and narrow mountainous areas whereas grad rockets are more suitable for use on open flat lands

Now they have computers to generate firing data. Range to target, deflection of the Forward Observer and Gun crews to target, Charge needed for the rounds, and no more manhandling of the assembled gun. How easy can it get? I worked the old M-30, 4.2-inch mortar years ago. Ground mounted and carried by the M-561 Gamma Goat truck. Also, the M-106 mortar carrier, a mortar gun carrier derived from the M-113. The assembled gun weighed 672.2-pounds, 405-kg, and no hydraulic lifting devices. Some back breaking labor. All firing computations were made from ballistics protractors, square grid charts, and mortar shell charge books. Needed to know how to count in fractions of 1/8th to place charges. Old school style. There may not be much crew protection on this vehicle. But, just how much did that crap assed M-561 Gamma Goat truck have? None! You will have to get additional vehicles to carry more mortar shells. The amount of shells carried in this truck and trailer may get you though one fire misson. Plus, all the personal gear, food & water, small arms ammunition, additional fuel for the vehicle. Spare parts and tires with the tools needed for those repairs. Radio transmitters and communications gear. Medical kits too. Looks like the engineers that designed this carrier for only the gun and a few mortar rounds. Needs to add a HumVee for the rest of the stuff needed. Besides there should be four men for each gun crew. So add a HumVee with cargo trailer. If the new 120-mm mortar is like the M-30 (Four-deuce) gun system. You will need 8 of these gun trucks, 10 HumVees w/ trailers for each mortar platoon that has two gun sections nessessary for a complete mortar platoon. I don't think that hydraulic lifting device that lifts and sets the gun will last under the strain of not only the weight of the gun, but, all the dirt remaining on the bottom of the base plate that will increase the lifting weight. Plus, the strain from the suction of the seated base plate when it sets after firing. There will be a lot more lifting force needed to get the gun into the carrying craddle.

Well the Marines chose to go with a redone, 40 year old French 120mm mortar, instead of the 12 year old Israeli derived 120mm mortar the US Army uses and a completely different style of prime mover. The French mortar works exceptionally well, but the Marines can't keep the associated vehicles out of the shop. In addition General Dynamics charges the Marines 37 times more than the manufacturer Thomson-CSF's list price for the actual mortar. The cost of always being different from the Army is getting very expensive. The Marines keep trying to go lighter and lighter, forgetting that emphasis on equipment and tactics left the Corps completely combat ineffective in their 2003 Invasion of Iraq up the Tigris river valley, they were stopped cold over and over by paramilitary forces, while never facing the Iraqi Army in Battalion strength once. Preparing to always face 3rd World goat and sheep herders is not a very good way to prepare for today's World. If the Marines had been assigned the US Army's task of advancing up the Euphrates in 2003, we'd still be waiting for them to get to the Baghdad airport. Needs to be a breech loaded 120mm under armour (Marine Medium Personnel Carrier), similar to the AMOS system. FYI the French Military will have replaced all of these types of mortars be the end of 2020 with a totally new system that's 28% lighter, just as the USMC is in the middle of fielding the older weapon to is active duty fire support elements. Coincident? I think not.

Unboundedominion it's a small vehicle meant to support marine expeditionary forces and army airborne, mountain, and ranger forces. It is much smaller than a humvee and can be transported much easier and by smaller aircraft, that's the whole point of this vehicle.
