While glad this went well, it still shows how far behind Boeing has fallen to SpaceX. Boeing was expected to beat SpaceX to this milestone when both companies got contracts. May 30, 2020 SpaceX had its first successful flight. Four years later, on June 5, 2024 Boeing made the same achievement. When SpaceX launched, they now regularly recover the booster rockets for reuse as designed. When Boeing designed Starliner, little can be reused and none of the boosters will be - so their costs to operate will be higher. Makes you wonder with all the problems Boeing is having with its commercial aircraft division and how far it is behind SpaceX what the future of this storied company is headed for in the near future. Time will tell.

The only advantage Starliner has (that Crew Dragon doesn't) is the ability to re-boost the ISS. This is extremely important, because up until now the only craft that can re-boost the ISS is the Russian Soyuz.
@Buc_Stops_Here
@Buc_Stops_Here Ай бұрын
@@StormsparkPegasus That is very short term. The ISS is end of life. They just extended it for a few more years until a new space station is built. The Russian module is leaking air so it has been closed off. The new space station will be built on the framework of the ISS. SpaceX is contracted to bring modules up as they are prepared - Boeing is not at that point yet. When there are enough modules to be self-supporting, the new space station will be separated, and the ISS will do a controlled de orbit into an ocean if all goes well. So re-boosting the ISS is not the cards but decommissioning permanently is.
@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus Ай бұрын
@@Buc_Stops_Here Well, reboosting will be a thing for the new station too. And Starliner is the only thing we (currently) have that can do it.
@Buc_Stops_Here
@Buc_Stops_Here Ай бұрын
@@StormsparkPegasus Again, short term as the heavy lift from SpaceX (which Boeing is not developing as this was its only contract it won) will be in operation soon - in time for the new space station. Boeing has enough problems as it is to try to develop another spacecraft. Note: Starliner now has 3 Helium leaks. Boeing closed the valves to two of them to stabilize the situation so the mission can continue but the quality issues continue.
