The Boerboel, also known as the South African Mastiff, is a large, Molosser-type breed from South Africa bred for the purpose of guarding the homestead. These dogs were bred as working farm dogs. BBATV caught up with Fuller and Gallant Boerboels in Mariposa, California. This is an amazing breed of mastiff powerful, athletic, and intelligent.

As an older South African Boer, I started watching this video with a biased opinion as I grew up with Boerbulls. The females of this breed are usually FIERCELY loyal to either an individual or a family depending on the way they grew up. Males are more often than not the instigators with a deep warning bark while the females attack with little to no warning. Since these dogs are very heavy and strongly built few subjects of attack survive an encounter. We tend to teach our dogs not to take food from strangers or to pick up random food thus minimizing poisoning.

I am in South Africa. My boerboel Shady is a very laid back girl. She loves kids although not many kids visit. We are an older couple. If she thinks I'm threatened in any way she will sit with me and not move until she feels happy. She tends to be lazy when it comes to working. Love her and my beagle to bits. They are both 4 years old.

Boerboels are actually great family dogs, my red male boerboel just turned a year old he is weighing in at 154 pounds and still has amazing endurance and loves to play. Very friendly we have 4 kids, 2 other dogs and a cat and he gets along with them perfectly. Great guard dog as well.... If a stranger decided to walk into our house without knocking he would definitely regret walking in... :-)

I have personally had the privilege of owning an African Boerboel and I can tell you that I have never felt safer than with my Wyatt. Extremely smart, intuitive, perceptive, and beautifully striped. A reverse brindle. Wyatt was very athletic agile, and highly flexible. A best friend, highly HIGHLY intelligent, beautifully proportioned, fiercely loyal and protective, even if in the end it resulted in his death. I don't recommend for a very social dog, or even a family dog unless you very strictly trained. They are bad ass and they know it... But when you have a very strong bond, and SET boundaries as to whom is in charge, you could not ask for a better companion nor protector. I miss Wyatt dearly every single day, and am grateful that I was able to call one of this breed my friend.

Grew up with these dogs in South Africa and bred them for years as my family did for decades . Never ever needed to separate them from each other . The pack was always together . They need a strong leader . If you need to separate them to maintain control then you aren’t fit to be a pack leader for these dogs . They are powerful dogs and need a powerful pack leader .

but how many intact breeding males do you have that aren’t brothers in one pack with no fighting?
@Ericsaidful
@Ericsaidful 2 жыл бұрын
It's not natural to have a "pack" of non-familial canines. You may have a mother, a father, and then offspring up to 2 years old together. But a dog pack wouldn't have intact males together who aren't related because, naturally, it results in bloodshed due to competition for breeding, space, and other resources (real or imagined).

Whats up guys. Im a South African and have 3 boerboels of my own. Just to add my 2c. Boerboels in general are very docile dogs with little aggression except when protecting the homestead . Obviously not all dogs are the same. They wont stand a chance against a lion but they were not bred to fight lions 1 on 1. Hunters used a pack of them and the idea was to protect the owner. If a lion were to attack, then the pack would fight to the death to protect the owner so they could escape. Even lions would be overwhelmed by 7 or 8 of these dogs simply because of numbers. My dogs stay at a farm n go out hunting on their own,a trait i never taught them. Ppl over feed to try n get the dog bigger bt then they become lazy. My dogs are free to roam so are highly fit and have fair pace for their size. Don't really care about the stance n square face, i zoned out when she started talking about that.

I admire this breed and have seen a few of them. My own dog shares some similar roots in that he is a Rhodesian Ridgeback, another breed from southern Africa that was used as a home guardian and all purpose hunting dog with a specialty in lion hunting. He has the light brown "wheaten" color of the Boerboels shown in this video. I believe that the two breeds have similar temperaments and are both exceptionally loyal and protective by nature. Logan is on the high end of size for a Ridgeback, weighing right around 115 lbs. One day at dog park a fellow showed up with a young male Boerboel who was the same height and length as Logan but weighed 30 lbs more, all rock hard muscle. Although both were intact males, they got along just fine with no hostilities. Life is better with a really good dog at your side.

Ridgebacks are slightly leaner and taller, and while I personally prefer the boerboel I have to admit the Ridgeback is easier to train and a bit smarter than my baby. Tough the Boerboel is the better choice round kids so I guess that even them out. Southern Africa is a harsh world that is not for sissies and our dogs are a perfectly suited to it, also the people here tend to treat dogs more like family than possessions unlike other places in the world, not saying people do not love their dogs in other places just the bond is not as strong same as people from the far North.

Went on April 4th to the WoofFest here in Beirut, Lebanon & I saw the most beautiful male black, pedigree Boerboel I've ever seen anywhere. He was a massive, super docile 5 year old male, his owner however confirmed he's as tough a guard dog as they can ever get. From my understanding he was well trained & properly socialized, being very friendly to other dogs & people as well. Loved the breed since!

I once had burgles home in the night once :) and i barley could opens the door bacose his pouching so hard ..and he gets out and take one of them in the hand and the others try to get him off with wresting him and hitting him but i didn't saw much in the dark , and it ends with they go off in the dark and police gets them later, and one of them has a crushed hand . this is the ultimate dog for us . For me they are the quintessential breed to have. They're great with children, sometimes a little over protective, but wonderful house dogs. They are very intelligent and need a lot of exercise or they'll chew the hell out of your furniture. Unless they've grown up with the family, they will need a slow introduction to those that visit occasionally. Loyalty is a key element of the breed, hence they are excellent guard dogs. This breed is not a first time dog, so if you're thinking of getting one I would advise against it. Proper training is essential to bond with the animal otherwise you have a rival for the alpha position. Love and respect goes a long way and the pay back is worth the effort.

x SANDINISTA x Thank you for your comment. Like you I think they are the greatest breed but from an early age I found they needed kind but assertive training otherwise it ends up the tail wagging the dog, if you see my point. During winter they love to curl up in front of the open fire, but I need to warm my butt too so I get a few grumbles when they are evicted from the fire place.

MbseedM hi, I suppose it’s more of a personal gauge rather than opinion based. I’m 17 and have grown up with dogs (a German shepherd, Aussie cattle dog, poodle mix and a staffy) and I’ve wanted a boerboel for years now. My best advice is plenty of research on the breed, many different websites I’ve come across are people’s own experiences with the breed and I found that extremely interesting and helpful. A Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a good second dog to get, they’re very sneaky and my Shelby girl is loving and affectionate but a brute when protecting her family. She is also quite naughty but with at least one person home majority of the day that tames her behaviour. Make sure you have a sturdy fence if considering a staffy though as they are escape artists, bred to pull soldiers off horseback’s in the war so they know how to climb and they’re mighty strong. Definitely a good breed to get more experience for owning a boerboel. Hope this helped 😊

Absolutely beautiful dogs they are a credit to all your hard work. I raised my German Rottweiler on the BARF (Bone & Raw Food) diet, He was exceptionally big for his breed,solid muscle, hardly ever ill and lived to be 11 + years old (the vet said because of his size he'd die before he was7), he was also the sweetest tempered dog I've ever had. Yes sourcing raw food can be hard work (in Britain at least), as most laws forbid hunting and trapping isn't looked at well with all the do gooders and such. Killing for sport is okay because only the rich can do it, but killing for sustenance is mostly illegal. Keep up the excellent work, thank you for a well put together video and sharing their beauty with us.

Wow someone who actually understands their dog and its breed well! She talked openly and honestly about their flaws, not just their positives. She talked about them maintaining their working ability and that they can be difficult to own manage. She was great. That makes her a breeder who i would trust or buy from... not that the mastiff breeds appeal to me. But just saying.

Mine was untypical build but his temperament was incredible. Was lucky to get him in a divorce the mother and father each took a dog and he was given to me by the fathers who wouldn’t ever be home for him. There kids named him zuri. he was by my side 100% of the time for three years. His life off the grid was very rewarding as he had a terrible hero complex and keeping squirles out the kitchen and mice out of the tarps daily chores provided amply work. Big zuri was loved by all

I have a cane corso and done my research before I got her at 7 weeks old and your comment shows you’ve done ZERO research. Her breed the cane corsi was bred as a war dog and would fight alongside roman soldiers and also they were tasked with bringing down lions in small packs of 4 or 5 and then the Roman soldiers would bring it back to the colleseum in Rome from Africa and force it to fight other people or there best dog for the audience and sometimes a cane Corso beat the lion but that was in the times when dogs were semi wild and were fighting in wars against arrows and swords so were extremely tough but even today a cane Corsica will gladly commit suicide and fight a lion in order to give you time to escape

listen I get that people have an immense amount of pride in their dogs I mean who wouldn't that's your best friend, but no dog on the face of the earth is capable of taking on a fully grown male African Lion it's just impossible they're the gladiators of the animal kingdom they have to know how to fight, a lion would destroy 20 boreboels easily, now I hope these women don't take the lion claim seriously because it would be traumatic for them to see a lion effortlessly bit the heads of their dogs off

Typically a pack of them would be used to deal with the lion and that is to harass the lion . Just like the Rhodesian Ridge-back is a lion hunting dog but it isnt a lion fighting dog; furthermore, it works in a pack. Lions would prefer to leave when confronted by a pack of dogs. Lions are smart they know that a human is not far from floppy eared dogs. Floppy ears do not appear in the wild in K-9s so when most predators see those ears they respond differently than when dealing with a prick eared wild K-9.

I hate these kind of people. they are breeding dogs that can or able to kill mothernnature. so what if you did invent a dog that can kill a lion. soon you'll have more vicious dogs for pit fighting. you'll see people get mauled and dead less than a minute by your dog that can kill a lion. so what if you did invent a dog that can kill all the top predators on land, what is your point? I'm sure your dog will kill you too and humans. worst enough they made pit Bulls that are almost killing in its sight. children mauled or get killed and adults. other smaller or lesser dogs getting killed and cats by pitbulls. now you want to make something more powerful than a pitbull. what are you? first your ugly and ugly people tend to be stupid and do stupid things cause they have nothing better to do. and this is what I think of these people and vedio, ugly and stupid!!!!

Some people have a really powerful imagination. Wow! The dog was derived from the wild and all things come from the Earth so all things are nature. Man made the dog to keep predators (mostly human predators) away, and to help us eat food (meat). Without the dog most of us would have died out in the "Ice Age".

I met one of these dogs today. A 140 pound male. He was very nice and didn't listen to his lady owner but he listened to me I helped her get him in his enclosure so I could work. The dog is very boss. Confident and powerful. Big baby Huey that just might snap and instinctually kill another animal. You look in the dogs eyes and the instinct you have is to look away because you do not want to challenge it because its so large and in charge. I want one but I would fear that my wife couldn't control it without me there without really taking initiative and being a momma to him or her from day one and she's not really the doggy mama type she doesn't know how to love and be a part of a pack.

Not bred to kill lions but as an all round farm dog with the ability to hunt and guard. Unlike a bull mastiff , which is likely the ancestor of the boerboel mixed with Ridgeback /Africanus type dogs. These dogs can hunt and also guard and do damage , no pinning down a foe without a byte. Saw a dog scalp an intruder last week.

There are other breeds bred to protect sheep from mountain lions in other areas of the world. Jy is dommer as grond.

Your very wrong about that, I wrote a research paper on that in college 30 years ago. The modern Cane Corso like the one in my picture, was breed by the Romans 2000 years ago to run down, and take down lions to capture, and bring back to the arenas. And many fights between Lions and dogs took place, most of the time there was 2 or more dogs, but in several cases their was just 1 dog, and he won. This dog became very famous and sparked a 2000 year love affair with the Roman Molossus, or as we know it today, the Cane Corso.

My Boerboel was so sweet but very protective. She was never aggressive with strangers, just a mix of curious and cautious. However, there were 3 times that she sensed "danger." A strange man had been driving around asking if people needed any handy-man work done. He was weird and would constantly knock on everyone's doors even though you'd say NO THANKS everytime. The idiot came back again one day....but now I had my Boerboel...she charged at the door and kept ramming herself into it, doing that scary low growl and barking very roughly! That man ran to his truck and never came back again. On our walks, she would never allow me to walk by a certain neighbor's house. She would stop short, look up at me as if to say "no," then stand still and stare at the house very intently. Then she would nudge me to back me up and turn me around in the opposite direction! Hmmm....! Normally she was excellent on a leash, she knew "slow down," "stop," "walk next to me," and the first time I walked her I went to cross a street and she stopped. I was like wtf? Then she shocked me: she looked both ways to make sure no cars were coming, then looked up at me, as if to say "okay it's clear" and as soon as I resumed walking, she did too. I rescued her at age 4, her previous owner was the one who trained her. He had to move to go to an out of state college and would be living in the dorms, so he had to give her up. He cried....now I cry because 5 years later she developed Mast-Cell Cancer, a very fast growing evil cancer. I miss her so much.😥♥️

I have a Boerboel(female) living next door to us, beautiful and impressive dog. She is tan or brown and goes about 100 pounds. She is just a tad low to the ground for her size, I don't know if that's normal or not. She is mostly friendly towards people and other dogs however I would always advise caution for both. Unfortunately I don't think she gets enough exercise. They don't have a back yard(fence) nor do they walk her. She is only out of the house for potty time. And yet she seems to remain happy. I hope it stays that way, she is a beautiful specimen.

Having family in the RSA whoBreed boerboels i can say they are NOT bred to fight lions, 1 lion will destroy 5 boerboels without any problem. They are guard dogs to fend of humans with bad intentions and warn the farmer for bigger predators. Then the farmer comes in and kills or scares away the lion with a gun. It's typical non RSA breeder bullshit to impress people. A full blown lion weighs around 300 pounds and will kill a boerboel in a single bite. They are very capabel guard dogs but altough they scare away bears and cougars a pack of lions will just kill them all and move on. Having lived in the RSA believe me when i say this. No farmer will send his dogs against even 1 lion. They live behind fences to protect them for a reason. For dogs they are very powerfull but in comparisson to a lion they are pretty weak. Anyhow nice dogs and good job on making this video. Grts

+Bart Vandenhaute not sure what you are talking about bud just cuz you are from SA doesn't mean you know shit about the Boerboel. Back in the turn of the century these dogs did guard against Lion's but you are right when you say one one there wouldn't be a chance for a Boerboel but back then most Farmers had more then one Boerboel looking after the homestead! These dogs when on guard they don't mess around they would die protecting their master and his family now that's a dog...

@emilio: no they wont @Molosser world: They are not meant to fend of lions, they are meant to fend of smaller predators like jackal or cheetah (or men). 100 years ago dogs were expensive to feed ( no dog food existed) and not expendable, so the farmer would shoot at the lions before they could get to the dogs/cattle. Lions normally don't walk alone but in packs. You can have 10 Boerboels, if they encounter a pack of lions with 6 full grown individuals they are toast. Also the Boerboel was not meant as a herd protection dog (like Mastin Espagnol or Kangal) but as defender of the homestead. Meaning behind fences most of the time. And yes having family who breeds Boerboels for 37 years - and has them for over 100 years - i know a thing or 2 about them ;), and we - part of my family - have been in the RSA for over 120 years. Because a dog would die for it's master (like many other breeds do as well) doesn't make it lion proof. I never stated they are weak dogs, i love em a lot but i can't stand the bs that is being spread about them (mainly the part were they are used for killing lions). For me they are one of the best guardian dogs around, they are beautiful, powerfull and very good to the family they live with. Yes they would die protecting you, but what good is a dead dog? They are bred to be smart in guarding, not taking unnecessary risks and not taking on (unless no other choice) animals who would easily kill them. A Boerboel who attacks without warning or thought... is not a Boerboel :).
