Nothing wrong with growing up on a Housing Commission estate, my parents were forced to go houso in 1958 as there were few properties around for young parents. I grew up in a 3 bedroom concrete house in Melbournes North, born in 1964. Big back yard and front yard, heaps of kids in the street and my Dad eventually bought the house in 1990 and sold it 10 years later for triple what he paid. The Houso show is an extreme version of how things were for most of us, yes there were deadbeat families around and some of the stories that came out were really sad for kids that you knew. But it was the exception and not the norm. My siblings and I all grew up ok, all of us work, two of us have business's, one was a popular blues muso for 25 years before he passed away and the other one is on on over $100k a year. Not too bad for housos.

Take the piss all you like, Bogans in the 80's all worked. Most of us were tradies, yes we drank weekends, had mullets, were petrol heads and had Tatts on our arms, listened to punk or metal and drove Commodores or Falcons. But we all grew up to be law abiding citizens, there were always those out there who we called dole bludgers that continued to live the Bogan life and passed that on to their kids and Grandkids. We were disliked in the 80's by our parents, the law and the Yuppies. Now a lot of ex bogans are Yuppies although I am still on the tools with my own business at 60. The Bogan term today is very different to back then.

Maybe check out “We’re Bogan” - written by one of our members who grew up in Bridgewater/Gagebrook and intended as a celebration of the best parts of growing up and living in the housing projects. We are aware that parts of “Bogans” come across as punching down, but the feedback we’ve had from friends, acquaintances and family who still exist every day in the Centrelink slave class see this song as a celebration- it’s representation, it’s relatable, it’s not bogans being violent or criminals in some police procedural. Unfortunately the high brow political stuff doesn’t resonate with that audience but stuff like this does. We make every effort in the annual Uni Revue to avoid punching down and taking the route of getting cheap laughs from bogan gags, but this song from 2014 was immensely popular and continues to be. Still, check out our other stuff. TasTV, Geeveston is still alright with me, Pete Cundall, plenty of videos that don’t include any punching down.
