For scratchy rough yarns I use old pantyhose or stockings and washed the skeins no unraveling or tangles. Put the skiens in tie a knot close to the skeins and throw in washer and dryer.

Always great to see you Jeanne! Good job finishing the diamond painting and starting another one. You are a busy lady! I live in the PNW in a very navy oriented town. We have a lot of folks who are here for a short time and others choose to make this their permanent home. Yes, I have washed scratchy yarn by the skein before crochet/knitting . Put the whole skein-- stuff it-- in a mesh bag wit a zipper for washing bras. It absolutely softened-- washed, the rinsed with a dye /fragrance free liquid softner in a washing machine. Dry in a dryer, make sure to leave in the washing bag, I added a dryer sheet there. Mine turned out lovely. Not as soft as akpacha 😊, but no longer scratchy. Try one skein. Bought the mesh bra wash bag at several stores-- Home Goods, WalMart, WalGreens. Try it. You'll like it 😂.

All the blankets are gorgeous….love the green apple one. I don’t use Red Heart value yarn much at all due to it being so scratchy and HARD on my hands! It’s so tough to crochet with too. I have heard other people say that the color dyes in the yarn makes it rougher and sometimes even thicker to crochet with. They say Black dye & the darker color dyes are worse than the lighter shades. That’s probably why the Aran/white color you are using in a blanket was softer than you expected it to be. I have never washed yarn prior to crocheting with it to see if it softens. So sorry but if you find out how or if it helps please let us know. 😊🧶 Your paintings are so pretty and I always enjoy seeing your progress. Can’t wait to see the cardigan you are working on. The Mandala yarn you purchased at Joann’s in the “Cool” color…..I am making a blanket for a Christmas present with that Color yarn…Love it! I love a lot of the Mandala yarns. Beautiful blankets! I often thought about trying to wash skeins of yarn first but have not tried it. It may work if you put it in an organza bag.
