Bohuslav Martinů. Epos o Gilgamešovi / The Epic of Gilgamesh

To everyone who's wondering about the pantomime: This production is based on a critical edition of The Epic Of Gilgamesh. Martinu himself wanted, at the world premiere in Basel in 1958, to see the soloists and even the chorus move around and make gestures, to enhance the story. The conductor Paul Sacher was, however, against the idea and performed the piece as a concert oratorio. This production is an attempt to perform Gilgamesh as closely to Martinu's original vision as possible. Thank you for posting this! This is probably my favorite of all of Martinu's staged works. When Martinu was at the top of his form, there were few composers at his level, and the music from Gilgamesh was some of the finest he ever wrote.

Thank you very much for this contribution. I'm sorry to say that I don't quite understand the role of the mimic, perhaps a contemporary ballet would have been better, but hey, this experience of seeing a performance even in video would have been incredible for me when I bought the Beholahvek's version more than 25 years ago!!!

How about NO mimic and NO ballet -- just the music and the singers....

... a very good performance, but where are the names of the young conductor and the soloists? .... the pantomimes are really hermetic and courious ... but this could be - indeed - the next step for a ballet-version of Martinus oratorio ; listen, too: to the extreme modern Gilgamesch-composition of the famous Dansk master Per Norgaard ...
