Nineveh Will Fall 2 Nineveh, someone is coming to attack and scatter you. Guard your fortresses! Watch the road! Be brave! Prepare for battle! 2 Judah and Israel are like trees with branches broken by their enemies. But the Lord is going to restore their power and glory. 3 Nineveh, on this day of attack, your enemies' shields are red; their uniforms are crimson. 4 Their horses[a] prance, and their armored[b] chariots dart around like lightning or flaming torches. 5 An officer gives a command. But his soldiers stumble, as they hasten to build a shelter to protect themselves against rocks thrown down from the city wall. 6 The river gates[c] fly open, and panic floods the palace. 7 Nineveh is disgraced. The queen is dragged off. Her servant women mourn; they sound like doves, and they beat their breasts in sorrow.[d] 8 Nineveh is like a pond with leaking water. Shouts of “Stop! Don’t go!” can be heard everywhere. But everyone is leaving. 9 Enemy soldiers shout, “The city is full of treasure and all kinds of wealth. Steal her silver! Grab her gold!” 10 Nineveh is doomed! Destroyed! Her people tremble with fear; their faces turn pale.[e] 11 What happened to this city? They were safer there than powerful lions in a den, with no one to disturb them. 12 These are the same lions that ferociously attacked their victims, then dragged away the flesh to feed their young. 13 The Lord All-Powerful is against you, Nineveh. God will burn your chariots and send an army to kill those young lions of yours. You will never again make victims of others or send messengers to threaten everyone on this earth.

16 The Lord said to me: 2 Jeremiah, don’t get married and have children-Judah is no place to raise a family. 3 I’ll tell you what’s going to happen to children and their parents here. 4 They will die of horrible diseases and of war and starvation. No one will give them a funeral or bury them, and their bodies will be food for the birds and wild animals. And what’s left will lie on the ground like manure.

Profetas relutantes Apesar da certeza dada pelo Senhor de que Jeremias havia sido divinamente escolhido para aquela tarefa, o jovem ficou assustado e não se considerou à altura dela. Talvez por conhecer a má condição espiritual da época, e por saber o que precisava ser feito, Jeremias não queria aquele trabalho. 5. Compare Jeremias 1:6 com Isaías 6:5 e Êxodo 4:10-15. Que pontos esses incidentes têm em comum? Independentemente das razões que tinham, nenhum desses homens se sentiu à altura da tarefa. Talvez este fosse um pré-requisito essencial para a função de profeta: o senso da própria indignidade e incapacidade diante de uma tarefa tão crucial e importante. Um porta-voz do Criador? Não é de admirar que eles recuassem diante da tarefa, pelo menos no princípio. Note, igualmente, a primeira resposta de Jeremias após ser chamado. Ele falou imediatamente sobre sua incapacidade de falar bem, como fez Moisés. Isaías também, em sua resposta, mencionou sua boca e seus lábios. Em todos os casos, eles sabiam que, ainda que seu chamado envolvesse outras coisas, envolveria também a fala e a comunicação. Eles receberiam mensagens de Deus e, portanto, teriam a responsabilidade de proclamá-las a outros. Diferentemente de hoje, quando poderiam fazer um site na internet ou enviar uma mensagem de texto, frequentemente a comunicação teria que ser face a face. Imagine ter que se colocar diante de líderes hostis ou de pessoas rebeldes e dizer-lhes palavras incisivas de repreensão e advertência! É compreensível a relutância desses homens que em breve se tornariam profetas. 6. Leia Jeremias 1:7-10. Qual foi a resposta de Deus a Jeremias? Por que essa resposta traz esperança e uma promessa com relação ao que cremos que Deus nos chamou para fazer?

The Lord Will Punish Judah The Lord said: 17 People of Judah, your sins cannot be erased. They are written on your hearts like words chiseled in stone or carved on the corners of your altars.[a] 2 One generation after another has set up pagan altars and worshiped the goddess Asherah everywhere in your country- on hills and mountains, and under large trees. 3 So I’ll take everything you own, including your altars, and give it all to your enemies.[b] 4 You will lose[c] the land that I gave you, and I will make you slaves in a foreign country, because you have made my anger blaze up like a fire that won’t stop burning.

The Lord Will Destroy the People of Judah 44 The Lord told me to speak with the Jews who were living in the towns of Migdol, Tahpanhes, and Memphis in northern Egypt, and also to those living in southern Egypt. He told me to tell them: 2 I am the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel. You saw how I destroyed Jerusalem and the towns of Judah. They lie empty and in ruins today, 3 because the people of Judah made me angry by worshiping gods that had never helped them or their ancestors.
