Hi Steve, I’m a master electrician with 35 years experience but no HVAC or plumbing experience. I can’t stop watching your videos. I’ve learned a tremendous amount. You are a true old school technician. I only hope the young bucks in our trades can someday become as good. Thank you very much for videos! In addition your personality lends itself to keep watching also!

Those controls are known to have poor solder joints on the printed circuit boards. I had the same problem at my house. I removed the pc board from the sheet metal box, on the back you could see the bad joint connection to the circulator. I know you have to switch the whole unit, but as a homeowner I cleaned and re soldered the bad joint, fixed the problem.

That’s a skill I wish I had. I’ve ruined many a circuit board trying to reflow solder. I’m zero for five
@johnc43524 жыл бұрын
samlol23 I get the soldering iron hot, then melt a little blob of solder on to the iron, then touch the hot blob of solder on the iron to the joint, the liquid solder blob transfers the heat more efficiently to the conductors. Also clean and use some extra flux on the joint first.
@Samlol23_drrich4 жыл бұрын
Thank you but here's the million-dollar question- what type of soldering iron? I have 3 that all stink one way or another. all Weller(?) 2 small stick like ones, one is 25w and one is 50w. Seem to take forever to heat up. Set 25 watt has the best tip, a smallish point. 50 Watts has a screwdriver like angled tip that's too big for fine work. I also have one that looks like a gun it's 150 watts and each up in about 5 Seconds which is great, but it also has a very large wire for a tip switchmate is no good to use for fine work What do you recommend?
@johnc43524 жыл бұрын
samlol23 A weller 50 watt should be plenty for pc work. Some take a long time to get hot enough, just keep dabbing the solder onto the iron till it starts to smoke and melt. Most of those irons have a screw on/off tips so you can change the tip to one that works for you.

I can remember way back when I was an apprentice in the HVACR trade (70's); one of my bosses and several of his tradesman lackeys would steal from customers when left alone in the basement...tools and other storage items; including furniture and appliances were boosted. I Left that employer for another one- at this particular fuel oil company, guys on the oil trucks would go deliver oil to a customer, leave the ticket in the meter, go to their own homes pump oil into their tanks, and charge it to the unsuspecting customer. How they got away with it, they would pump 15-20 gallons at a time from each unsuspecting customer. Left that company too. Based on my technical knowledge and field experience, I converted my parent's heating system and water heaters to natural gas (3-hamily house) and serviced the equipment myself And unless absolutely necessary, if any tradesman came to the house, I watched them like a hawk. And that holds true today.

You can very quickly short from 1 to 2 on the power head and if a small spark is detected, then the t-stat is calling and the head should be open. If it's not open, then replace the power head.

The low voltage might have been that head with a shorted solenoid. Drawing more current than the transformer can supply at full voltage.
@ironiczombie25304 жыл бұрын
Exactly and that's why it was abnormally hot as well
@boggy76654 жыл бұрын
@@ironiczombie2530 I wonder if a 'tell' for that, would have been the transformer being abnormally warm too.
@ironiczombie25304 жыл бұрын
@@boggy7665 I think it could be when they malfunction this way. I have seen it once b4 with my mother in law's boiler, low voltage with a load applied, only one of three zone valves working and the transformer was hot to the touch, much warmer than normal.
@AKredhed3 жыл бұрын
So what exactly would have been the fix in that case?
@zekenzy64864 жыл бұрын
Great good. is water heater for Boiler different or the same with water heater ( in the house doesn't have Boiler ). Thank you.
@facethewind4 жыл бұрын
I suspect the bad control card was also loading up the transformer, in addition to the bad zone valve head, causing the lower-than-normal voltage. The fact that the voltage at the transformer was low says that it wasn't a dirty connector causing it.

@newjerseybill35214 жыл бұрын
@@ironiczombie2530 They are also know as firefighter killers. They fail very early in a basement fire. The metal plates you see have teeth punched into then that are then pressed into the wood. During a fire the steel plates heat up, oxydizing the wood around them. They then fall out causing rapid structural failure of the prefab joists leading to an early floor collapse.

@zeroheat57874 жыл бұрын
rootvalley motorized zone valves suck. I’ve never installed them on any new boiler installation. I’ll only service them. I know it’s cost effective to use them, opposed to circulators for each zone. The cost of flanges, the pump, and switching relay isn’t really that much more in price, so why not install something that’s far superior, and easier to service and diagnose?

the Kobie Bryant accident the helicopter if an engine failure they can land in a emergency by the means of autorotation i seen helicopters in a hover can suffer from a tail rotor failure as thats needed to counteract the torque on single rotor helicopters as the rotor blades can fail and it can crash as the Robinson R22 is known for that as this was a Sikorsky S-76B.
