I welded with some guys from local 72 in Atlanta. I wasn't a union welder. I ended up fixing their welds. Being a "union" guy doesn't mean anything. It means you give money to your union and they donate your "union" money to democratic politicians. I watched those guys asking all the hands for money because a 40 year "union" hand died and the union wasn't helping his family. I also watched a 36 year union hand retire and the stewards and union reps didn't even show up to congratulate the guy. It's disgusting what I saw the "unions" do. No thanks

Working both Union and None Union for over 30 years. There is good and bad welders in both. But the nice things about working in the union environment is you have a place to practice and test for no cost, your benefits are paid for 100% by the employer, employers pay into your retirement (Pension)package so much per hour, the wages and standards are agreed and stay the same for entire time on the Union agreement. As well as all members pay a death assessment if you die and is given to the Beneficiaries. While working none union you get what they offer and can change when ever employer wants to change your wages, benefits if there is any and standards other than the legal standards they have to follow. I prefer working for a union Environment and there is way more benefits for the worker and my time is compensated better. At least these are some examples of my experiences.

Congrats on being an apprentice, but please remember that being a journeyman Boilermaker means you can do any and all of our trade. In over 20 years, I’ve never seen anyone’s union book say “Boilermaker Welder”. They say Journeyman once you bust out. Too many guys think that they are “welders only” and most are only rod burners, not a true welder and there’s a lot of work that has to be done prior to most the welding, such as demo or hanging new panels. Not trying to say anything bad, just trying to change the mindset of some of the younger generation. We need everyone that cares and wants to learn a good trade. I’m a 2nd generation, graduate apprentice out of Local 101. Went to the apprenticeship competition and now I’m a superintendent for a good sized Union Contractor. Just please don’t get stuck focusing on welding. Yes it’s a big part of our trade, but it’s only part of the skill set you will have after you bust out of the apprenticeship.

Dave Uhl thanks for the advice. I say I’m a boilermaker welder because that’s what I am in the union... I understand that I will learn Mechanic work and that I will do mechanic work. However, in the union I am a PSW (Pressure system welder) and I am going through the PSW program that was introduced to the union around 10 years ago. So when I’m a journeyman I will be a journeyman PSW. I am also on the welders list for dispatch. When a contractor wants welders then they call off the welders list. I have done mechanic work and I enjoy the mechanic work as well. However I am considered a welder
@daveuhl33924 жыл бұрын
Quinn Howlett when finished with your apprenticeship, you will be a red seal certified journeyperson Boilermaker. Currently you’re a Boilermaker Apprentice, nothing more and nothing less, unless you’re trying to take a welding test for your hall and then plan on buying your book, in which case you wouldn’t be an apprentice at all. But again, best wishes and get out there and make the Boilermakers Union proud by being the best you always can be.
@quinnhowlett6974 жыл бұрын
Dave Uhl currently I am a second year Boilermaker PSW apprentice... I was hired into the union as a welder, in a separate welding program. I do not go through the same schooling as the mechanics... I will still be getting my red seal journeyman certification at the end of my apprenticeship, but I will still be a Boilermaker PSW, which is a Boilermaker Welder, getting dispatched from the welders list... I know what I am dude lol

The only place you need to feed wire to each other is on the sides. That’s a luxury that you can only do if you’re not on a waterfall with a bad draft. Otherwise you just gotta reach back in there and get it. You can burn the bevel off with your arc (if the gap is tight) and feed your wire on the inside to give you more room.

I have been on plenty of tube jobs and have never done this. It’s always been partner fills you wire for the tacks then you weld a quarter of the tube with your right hand then do the other quarter with your left. Then you pass the torch to your buddy and he does this same. And this is on black liquor boilers.... (and even power house) and if you know anything about that type (black liquor) you know what could go wrong with those hahah
@JungleConflict4 жыл бұрын
And also forget about the burr grinder, you only use that if you absolutely need it. And if you know how to weld you will almost never need it. (Most companies will give you a couple extra $$ if you do it fast so don’t dick around) And most places never have you TIG the cap unless it’s a repair. It’s almost always 7018 for the cap....
@Roncass43 жыл бұрын
By turning your torch out or down slightly at stop, it prevents that pop that can cause a fisheye and does not leave that glob to start off again and doesn’t require a burring tool. I hate those burr’s down my neck and in my shirt!

They’re using a 9FV head. You don’t want a big rig in there because you need to be able to see around the cup at times
@eridu773 жыл бұрын
With a stickout that much a jumbo cup would serve you better to keep down porosity and improve the surface oxidation. There's also Pyrex cups to see through. A mini rig (WP-9FV) is rated for 125amps. If cheaply made they burn up often. I just don't see the need to have a light duty rig rig to do that, there's nothing in your way to restrict the movement of the head so why not get a WP-17H with a jumbo stubby and weld in it's capacity?

@mattharper588 Жыл бұрын
I’m a retired Union Boilermaker and if you are having a hard time making welds that will pass inspection the contractor you are working for will pull your welding papers for that company and you will not be allowed to weld for them again until you can pass a welding test and re certify and they will probably let the Union hall know also they only want welders that are consistent and do not have any bad welds at all
@samuelbell2390 Жыл бұрын
It depends. They want a 100% pass rate. They know that's impossible, but you better not be fucking up often. Its gotta be once in a blue moon. Also stuff thats gonna be QCed to hell is gonna get the best welders. If youre not the best you'll probably get moved to less demanding welds.

All welders will eventually learn possibly someday that the only way you really going to ever get to really enjoy your craft of welding is to have your own shop and be in business for yourself because one of the worst things about the field of welding are the other people that you have to weld with and weld around , it's a hard crew to get along with and no matter what you do or how much you do you never can satisfy the supervisor it seems like but if you got your own shop you can weld according to your own pace and you can build and weld whatever you want. I've noticed on jobs that I've been on offshore and inland before I retired it was always some other welder that was knifing me in the back out of jealousy. I hate to say it but most welders are alchoholics, and that reason alone if no other makes him a hard bunch to work with. Go to the channel of moseseseseses, type in: $3000.00 a day welding in your own back yard.

Kind of an Ignoarnt comment. As a Pipefitter Welder, We respect Boilermakers for what they go through, They do things we couldnt do and we do things they couldnt do, both trades are superior in their own way. At the end of the day, most Boilys become Pipefitters for better wages, cleaner work, or to work closer to home.

I noticed how you guys fit up the tubes....we use 2” angle with a welded nut and a bolt on one side and L shape plate welded on the other....those L shape will hook on the fins...(those longitudinal bar mostly 1/4 “ thick that’s welded in between the tubes)...you’ll figure it out which end you have to put it looking at the orientation of the tube,..that’s for up and down alignment,side to side...we use wedge..On welding, we supply filler on the other welder just on the corner, once able we supply ourselves....one thing about boilermaker you should be able to weld left and right...it gets easier.....but if you don’t know how to use your inferior hand,you’re bound to call a lot of saints in the process. I could not stand those soot when it turned to a slimy stuff...makes my skin dark and greenish..I’ll get allergic reaction to it...although boiler job is exciting I never miss it because of those

Where is there a corner on a round tube
@LeadRakFPS Жыл бұрын
@@mattharper588 he’s obviously talking about the sides. I’m a Boilermaker. We only feed wire to our partner on the sides (in between the tubes), then once your welded out from the sides you feed wire yourself.

@matt harper 🤣 Because you were asking, "Where is there a corner on a round tube?" I was just pointing out that they were clearly talking about the sides when they said, "corner".

My father was a Boilermakers as well as me and he told me a similar story about coat hangers. I always thought it was just his way of saying that we can do it, no matter what it takes. My favorite is; “I have been doing so much, for so long, with so little, that I’m now qualified to do anything, with nothing!”
