Well, it's all about perception and priorities. Money isn't everything, especially when your salary swings back and forth in huge leaps. I remember some years that I made a great living, then the following year I was lucky to break 45-50k with unemployment. I'm sure there are some boilermakers that died young or had an early onset of Parkinson's disease may tell you otherwise. A boilermakers life is not glamorous by any stretch. This career is a give and take, feast and famine.

A "field" construction boilermaker job is very perilous. Hazards such as falling, crushing, dismemberment, electrocution, asphyxiation, fire, etc. Not only immediate physical hazards, but there a lot of airborne hazards that have a cumulative effect on your health, ie: arsenic, asbestos hazards, lead, cadmium, etc. Proper training, equipment and awareness can help keep risks to a minimum. As for your second question, I put the artist's name and song title at the end of the film. (ie:credits)

Depending on what local boilermaker union you join and what application your looking for will depend on the amount of travel, there are many variables to your question. For instance, a fabrication shop geared boilermaker will not have to travel. A field construction boilermaker travel time will vary. Typically, local unions in the south, such as Texas or South Carolina, etc. Travel out of state frequently to make their living. If you want to know more, feel free to message me.

Parkinson's is a central nervous system disorder. Years of exposure to welding fumes, from various welding applications, can contribute to such ailments. Manganese, Chromium, etc, are all hazardous byproducts from welding.

Im an apprentice boily in australia but what is this "local" thing everyone talks about? I've never heard of the term until I started watching YT vids
@charlesstella64766 жыл бұрын
Astro, unions in the States are segregated by local lodges that coincide with a geographical region and identified by a numerical means (i.e., Pittsburgh PA = Local Lodge 154, Charleston WV = Local Lodge 667, etc). Also, Each respective union(s) bear different local lodge numbers. I worked in Australia years ago, from what I recall, they don't use this method and are represented by a National Organized Labor Union. Also, the boilermakers I worked with in Australia were more in tune with, and fall into a category of, "metal fabricators/mechanics/plate welders". Boilermakers in the states (and the UK predominantly) follow suit with constructing/maintaining fossil-fuel boilers; as this is still a fairly dominant source of power in the US. Most American boilermakers are extremely well versed in "tube welding" and heavy rigging. In Australia, "riggers" are an entirely separate category of trade, but would fall in line with our, "ironworkers". Some more about "local lodges": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_union

Charles Stella Thanks for the reply and apologies for my late reply...Thanks for clearing that up. Yes Australia doesn't use that local method and are more in tune with fabrication that I'm aware of...I work on mining equipment which is more of a welding trade than anything but love it. Boilermakers in Australia aren't real boilermakers that's just the title they are referred to but don't get me wrong very good at what they do...cheers
@charlesstella64765 жыл бұрын
@louis landry Yes, I failed to mention this. Now that I recall, I had worked with some Canadians years ago. I think their lodge was out of Ottawa, if I recall correctly. Fairly rare to see/work with the Canadian boilermakers though.
