I love how this show even thinks about its character's species. Mr PB will always be there for you, he'll always want to make things right, he'll always be in a good mood unless given a really good reason not to be, he'll never leave your side and most important, he'll love you, unconditionally, with everything he's got. You'll be his whole world. Just like a real dog. The problem is, you can't relly on your dog for your social human necessities. You can try to talk to your dog, and maybe he'll hear you, but never actually listen or understand. He'll approach and try to console you if they see you're upset, but never *get* why you're upset in the first place. He can't share his own happiness because emotions just aren't the same to a dog. He'll make your life better and make you smile, but it can't understand you, so it can love you in the way that you might want, but never in a way that you need.

She didn't want an actual Belle Room, its what it represents. Its someone knowing you so well that they know exactly what would make you happy. Beast (with help) knew she liked books and gave her his entire library, and it was perfect. The fact that Peanut Butter misunderstood and gave her a literal Belle Room is exactly why they don't work. He just doesn't get her. While the gesture was nice and a lot of effort put into it, it just finalized that realization for her that they together just don't work. The final straw as it were, and sometimes the straw doesn't have to even be that heavy to finally tip the scale/break the camel's back.

"What's her problem?" Her Problem is that while she loves him he is a lot of work. He is nice and fun and loving but at the same time he is very hyper, has a very different world view and doesn't really understand her. He tries very hard to but ultimately he doesn't and they just aren't compatible. Love doesn't conquer all. Just think about all the shit she has been putting up with since season one. Sure, PB is understanding and sweet and forgiving but he doesn't think very logically, thinks being popular is more important than good morals is incredibly random and most things work out for him through dumb luck and charisma. They are so damn different and while that isn't a problem for PB it's gotten clearer and clearer that is wears Diane down. She loves him, but their relationship is stressful. It's a lot of work. Remember the underground episode were Diane has this breakdown about why she can't be happy? She is trying but I think next to the constantly happy go lucky positive PB she only feels more inadequate and feels worse than she actually is because PB is really UNUSUALLY HAPPY. Being around him breaks her no matter how much she loves him. Work is work, and home is work. She can't keep up with him and she can't catch a break. "What is her problem?" her problem isn't his nice gesture, her problem is that she realizes just how bad she is feeling with the man she genuinely loves. That him trying so hard because HE is insecure is exhausting and she is running out of energy. That she just doesn't have the energy to deal with both of their issues because she is already overwhelmed by her own issues. The problem isn't the Belle-room. It has little to nothing to do with the Belle-room. The problem is that she finally realized she is tired. Tired of squinting.

People may think Diane had this moment with Mr. Peanubutter just because of the Belle Room thing. The way I see it, they’re actually 2 very nice people in a surprisingly fucked up relationship. Let’s not forget that he allowed fracking under their house knowing she was against it and the consequences of his decision nearly killed them both. So basically, he never listens even when he does listen. Diane thinks of him as this really happy positive guy who is the best thing that ever happened to her but that makes her feel guilty about her own negativity and insecurities. And both of them seem incapable to change certain things about themselves. Mr. Peanutbutter can’t help but to be impulsive. Diane can’t help but to feel uncomfortable with the contradictions and injustices on the world around her and her own feelings about herself and others. I don’t know, as a guy who doesn’t like “big gestures” myself, I really try to understand her point of view. Not that Mr. PB is wrong, not really. “It’s just the way he is, and maybe it’s just the way she is” - Joan Holloway (Mad Men)

Mr. Peanutbutter is not as innocent as you guys are making him out to be. Diane has told him constantly throughout this series to not do big gestures for her. It makes her feel uncomfortable. However, Mr. Peanutbutter doesn't listen to her and does another silly big thing for her. The first time is a mistake, the fifth time is just him not caring. It doesn't matter if it was well- inentioned, he should know his wife by now. It was about making himself feel better about the house, not her. Mr. Peanutbutter doesn't really listen to anyone, but the difference is that other people are not married to Mr. Peanutbutter, Diane is. Not listening to a person that you are married to wears down the relationship fast. He has also been making large stupid decisions this whole season. I know his hi- jinks are funny, but the whole reason they are getting a new house is because he didn't listen to Diane about fracking. They almost died. The house was supposed to be a new start, but Mr Peanutbutter did the same shit he always does. I know Diane is no angel either, but it seems that just because Mr. Peanutbutter is "nicer", people demonize Diane and it kind of bothers me. If this comes off as abrasive, I am sorry, it is not my intention.

Right. The point here is that she keeps telling him she doesn't like grand gestures of that sort, but he keeps doing them anyway because doing them is the kind of thing he likes and the kind of thing that makes him feel good. It's not the gesture that the problem. It's that he's not listening to her or acknowledging her wishes, even after she's requested it repeatedly.

Exactly! Remember in Season 1 when he proposed to her, and it looked like it was intimate, but suddenly it was a huge party? In Season 2 they had a disagreement about Hank Hippopopalus; Diane was trying to expose him, while Mr. Peanutbutter was trying to work with him? Then when Diane ended up going to Cordovia, and hid from him for months? In Season 3, they were in couple's therapy together, and they kept using the "I hear you; your feelings are valid" language, but they still fought? And of course the governor's campaign in Season 4, ending with this. I'm glad they let them go through relationship before seeing come to this point.

Nahid's opinion... Peanutbutter isn't awesome just because he does these big gestures. That's not what relationships are build to. He doesn't listen to her. I mean *sigh* it's his opinion, but this is way more than "Diane is bad, Mr. Peanutbutter is cool" Peanutbutter tries to be nice and he does nice gestures, but they are for him. When you realize this it also explains why he has so many ex-wives.
@AdderMoray

He didn't do something for her. He did something genuinely nice, but not the least bit considerate. He built her a replica of a scene from a movie and filled it with fake books instead of actually listening to what she was saying and giving her a library space. Or, even better, asking her what she wanted. All this after she explicitly told him how much she hates it when he does those grand gestures that he does.

I think Diane was so upset because, as she's said repeatedly, she doesn't like the "grand romantic gesture", and still Mr. Peanutbutter keeps doing them regardless. It shows that he doesn't listen to her. Remember how much happier she was when they were slumming it on the non-trip to Hawaii? I don't think Mr. Peanutbutter realises that the world doesn't operate according to sitcom rules. This is a trait he shares with Bojack.

One if not the most impressive thing about BH is that it can be completely ridiculous in the comedy, but still maintain it's dramatic punch. Most shows sprinkle a bit of comedy in the drama or opposite. But I've never seen a show mixing it this well, and being to able to make it work with this amount of insane wacky comedy, while being the most profound show I'm currently watching. It's literally the complete package.

Mr. Peanutbutter give her all these gifts and surprises because he is scared Diane will divorce him when she gets older, just like his ex-wives did. He is pretty materialistic opposite to diane, and he doesn't get the real value of Diane's fantasies and he materializes them. This is his understanding of a contract between lovers. And Diane finally realizes Peanutbutter is a good person but a shallow partner; so she says "i'm tired of squinting" to unsee his nihilistic materalism. Mr. Peanutbutter's pattern of divorces is is examined in season 6. His nihilism is expressed through his quote "The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead." And also when he's faced with his family's health issues, his nihilism comes back. He chose himself an entertaining life, full of realizing dreams by being positive (or being rich), but deeply he doesn't care for any of these things; they are unimportant nonsense. And of course Mr. Peanutbutter doesn't view Diane like he views his possessions. She's the best thing in his life, and it's love. But the things he gives her are unimportant nonsense to both of them, like any other thing in his life; except Diane. Yet Mr. Peanutbutter keeps giving these things to her. Because he is scared, that Diane being the only thing that truly matters to him will get bored of him. Diane is a smart girl, I think she figured this long ago and started squinting.

Mr. Peanutbutter is a good dude but he's only a good dude when it also makes *him* feel good. He did that for Diane not because she wanted it but because *he* wanted to do it for her. She said no big gestures and he just...doesn't pay attention. He loves her, but he just doesn't listen and that's his downfall. He's the most selfishly unselfish character lol.

The more I listen to the guys talk about Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane, the more I ache to see them react to the Halloween episode. Mr. Peanutbutter does these things but Diane never ever likes them, but he doesn’t listen or pay attention and he keeps doing them. It’s like, catch her off guard once with a big gesture she doesn’t appreciate at all, shame on her. Continue to do this over and over no matter how many times she explains to you that she is just not that kind of person, shame on him all the way.
@ChevaliersEmeraude

Honestly, the worst part is it would be so easy for them to compromise. Like, still make great gestures but with her approval instead of a surprise. Like, with the library exemple in this episode, after they discussed Diane's dream room, instead of planning a surprise, he could have been like "you know, I can call the workers, they can build you a library if you want" and then she can answer if she wants it or not, and he can act accordingly. And who knows, maybe she'd have liked it if it didn't come up by surprise, she may had said yes to it, so he can still make a big thing for her anyway

Jeremy nobody is a good person. That’s the point. Mr. Peanutbutter doesn’t listen. Diane has impossible standards. Bojack wants things to work out like they do on TV and they don’t. That’s the point of this show, everybody does shitty things sometimes, everybody has problems, and makes dumb decisions, and hurts people they don’t want to hurt. I’m not DEFENDING Diane any more than you’re saying Mr. Peanutbutter is blameless. I’m saying you automatically consider her to be 100% at fault every time Mr. Peanutbutter fails to remember the last time he pulled a stunt like this. These comments sound like a broken record because y’all never seem to absorb the point they’re trying to make. Also, Mr. Peanutbutter makes a lot more terrible choices next season than Diane does.

dodiswatchbobobo Are you kidding, Diane is 10x worse than Mr Peanutbutter next season. Remember what she did to the Philbert episode script, which was completely and utterly unwarranted? I won't say anything more than that because spoilers. And nobody being a good person is a subjective stance. You can be a good person who sometimes does bad things. Diane feels like no one is good because she's a trash person, and she has a habit of dragging people down with her whenever her life doesn't go as planned. Princess Carolyn, for example, is a good person. The worst thing she's done in this series is signing Bojack's name without his consent, and that is nowhere near as despicable as most other characters.

Uhhh sorry guys, but as soon as Peanutbutter mentioned the "fake books," that should have been a humongous red flag. Because that's what the gesture was: fake. It was a disguise for Peanutbutter to give himself brownie points in the relationship. He doesn't realize that this isn't what'd make Diane happy, but rather something that'd make him happy because he THINKS Diane would be. Thankfully, season five helps clarify this, and highlights more of Peanutbutter's flaws, especially as a boyfriend/husband. And basically and rightfully tells everyone who just calls Diane a bitch just because she wasn't happy in their relationship to shut up and place themselves in her shoes.

F is For Family is really funny, I love the vibe and some of the cast is amazing. Bobs Burgers is The Simpsons of this generation. A more human, down to earth and heartwarming updated version. Great stuff and great characters/chemistry. But I agree. Bojack Horseman is on another level. I think it's even on the level of Breaking Bad in terms of writing and how well it's made, regarding complexity and how well everything fits together. The acting is also amazing, but man. Breaking Bad had some amazing acting. But Bojack is not far behind I think. Will Arnett crying/sobbing after the shoot of Secretariet... Man that one felt real, instead of overacted. And shook me to my core. I love how Bojack Horseman have more interesting side-characters, that are much more fleshed out. It's amazing how they can make all th pieces fit and work so great together, intertwining the stories so amazingly well.

BoJack Horseman has, straight up, stepped into Breaking Bad's shoes as the best show on television right now. It's the character work that is so damned good but it's handling of themes is downright masterful, while each series gets better and better in terms of its overall structure. Then you have the 'Masterpiece' episodes. "Downer Ending," "Escape from L.A," "Fish out of Water," "Time's Arrow," "Free Churro" ... and that's me cherry picking one from each season. The further into the show we've gotten the more 'masterpiece' episodes we get per season. It helps too that the creator, Raphael Bob-Waksberg knows where the story is going and how it ends. It means that, while the ending is planned, the destination can take as long as he wants. Because after all, there's always 'more show.'

This was the moment I just decided and knew the final straw was broken, at least for their marriage. They both try and they both are flawed and well meaning people, but they just aren’t compatible with each other in the long term. This belle room incident is just a monolith to the same uncompromising issue that has popped up over and over and over again, and it made me realize that they would keep fighting and getting miserable and angry over it if they stayed together.

Dianes problem is that Mr PB doesnt listen to her. Hes inconsiderate. She told him about her fantasy and he immediately bought a room of fake books and everything because he is all about grand gestures while Diane hates those. He didnt consider for a moment to ask her what she wants in the house that was supposed to be "theirs" according to himself. And then Diane said it herself in the episode. Mr PB can be loveable. He can be great. But hes also just incredibly irritating for Diane most of the time - and to be fair would probably be for most people in a relationship. Theres a reason hes divorced so many times. Shes tired of searching for the special moments that made her felt good. Im not saying that Mr PB is a horrible person for trying to make his wife happy with this room, with this gesture. A failed relationship doesnt need to have one monster after all.

Yeah it's so weird how people expect Mr. Peanutbutter to turn into Bojack or something. He's still Mr. Peanutbutter, I don't see him becoming a drug-addict, alchoolic, selfish a**hole. I don't see that happening with PB. But I do see his career catching up a bit, considering (SPOILER ALERT) the quality of his work in Philbert is heavily hinted to be actually great! And he's making this movie based on a birthday card, which if it also turns out great, well, he's got a good career going for him. His love life might get better, too. Not initially, but his relationship with Pickles, to me, seems like he'll get to see what it's like to date someone like him, which will allow him to grow, and Diane is growing to, and they still love each other, so I actually can see them getting back together. That's the thing: While for Bojack you can see him spiraling down all the time, PB can get some happy endings once in a while. In a weird way, that character is probably the most normal of the crew (well, except maybe Princess Caroline), in the sense that his life is neither all-good all the time, nor completely bad all time. His life is a balance of good and bad, and I don't see that changing that much in the future.

"That’s the problem with life, you either know what you want, and you don’t get what you want, or you get what you want, and you don’t know what you want" Diane said this way way back, and fake books or not it gets to a real point of life. She was happy of the dream of having the belle library, but to have it (as far as painted clocks go) meant that the motivation/purpose/will to live has to be restarted.

To add to the conversation on why PB and Diane eventually fell apart is through their differing views on the pursuit of happiness, Peanut Butter was raised to live in the moment and never consider the possibilities of tomorrow as it would be meaningless to do so (evident with his father and hiding the cancer from his family), while Diane is always looking ahead to better herself, despite her own flaws. These two were never going to last and this moment was the breaking point for both of them. It is a wonderfully crafted yet tragic season for many of the ensemble cast going through rough patches while Bojack is starting to finally understand what he has to do, to be better and thus gets a well earned new relationship and optimistic new beginning. Only for that development to literally be wasted (intentionally) by his method acting approach in Season 5 that brings out the worst in him.

I'd like to share my experience because I think it's relevant to better understand why bojack might have a positive change: I grew up (and still live) with a very psychologically abusive mother, on many levels she reminds me of beatrice. During my childhood and teenage years I've heard the worst things sayd to me, I've received emotional blackmail from her and been manipulated in any way possible. She caused me to have clinical depression and many issues. But somehow, by going to theraphy, I started to dig into HER life, even if I didn't want to have anything to do with her anymore. I basically "studied" my mother as if I didn't know her, I started to know the woman she really was and I discovered that she had a similar abusive mother and grandma, all the women in her life have been abusive. She was very damaged by her own parents and she has never experienced healthy parenthood, and she therefore cannot be a good mother because she doesn't understand it. This.. Changed everything for me. I mean, not everything, my therapist made it really clear that I must not forgive her, because what she did was horrible and there's no valid excuse, but now I can understand and accept. This knowledge gave me the peace I needed to live better with myself and others around me, and since then I've been a much positive and healthy person. I think, based on my experience, that that's what's going on with bojack.

I just watched this ep and for anyone still watching...let me tell you i feel diane on this. The entire show mister has consistently gone out of this way to do things that are yes kind gestures, just not the she feels love. When youre with someone you have to love them on their terms. Diane aint perfect and bucks against mister a lot but she also goes along with any and every venture and idea that hes had. Not peacefully. But she does. And theyve been married long enough that he should have known not to get her the library. As soon as they had the first convo about it i read mister like a book and knew he was going to misunderstand. He would have legit been better off getting a small belles library model for her. She even acknowledges that the gift is great in the midst of her frustration. But its been too long for him to still be making these kinds of large mistakes in his marriage. Diane could also have earned in other eps an equally long rant. But holyfk do i love how these characters are written. So much small depth and personal detail.

In Mister Peanutbutters Defense: Yes, he didnt listen to Diane. Yes, Diane doesnt like Big Gestures and want thoughtfull gifts. But to be fair: Diane also never did anything for Mister Peanutbutter. She is allways complaining about him and dont like the lifestyle she marriaged into. He likes Big Gestures. Do you really think Diane would ever make a Big Gesture for Mister Peanutbutter? Hell no. She is just as ignorant to him as Mister Peanutbutter was to her. The break-up was the mistake of both of them. Diane was just the first one who pointed it out and blamed the other one.

There's definitely a version of getting the "Belle Room" that Diane would be happy with, but someone choosing all the details without consulting you feels awful, like hearing "this is really what you want, so you'd better like it" Maybe it's different if you live in a world of grand gestures and think it could be changed right away it might be no big deal. But most of us I think would see a custom room as a huge investment of time and resources that would be inappropriate to change right away, maybe like being given a super-expensive car. It seems like more reverence is due to it (because it represents a lot of resources) even if it's a bad gift. It's hard to parse when there's so many stories of rich men getting elaborate gifts for their partners and being praised and loved for it. The show is calling out that it would feel like being trapped and emotionally manipulated to be on the receiving end of such gestures and expected by everyone to like it. (Assuming they represent a selfish projection onto the recipient, like in this episode.)
