It just pisses me off that anybody is excusing Beatrice AT ALL. You all understand she did this all for selfish reasons, right? If Henrietta kept the child, Butterscotch (and by extension Beatrice) would be on the hook for financial support. Butterscotch begged his wife to fix this and she did.

This show did great by not shaming Henrietta for her mistake. She slept with the man married to the woman she worked and cared for, and ended up coming to her for help. Why? She should be shamed. She didn’t know right from wrong because he came into her? She is old enough to know better than to have an affair in the house of the person that’s paying you. A child could tell you that’s a wrong thing to do. If you’re saying flirting is manipulation, you’ve lost the plot. It’s not right what he did and I can see how someone would make the mistake she mad. The consequences being as difficult as they are also evoke sympathy. But what you’re doing, absolving her of actions, justifying it despite how clearly wrong and horrible it is, is wrong. She should be shamed because it is clearly wrong and even the most naive person would know that’s wrong, This almost sounds like one of those bad excuses people give to justify cheating as a ‘mistake.’

Terriccota Pie honestly, in a way I think that Beatrice knew how sucky her life was and didn't want anyone else to end up like her. Henrietta was already down on her luck, imagine being out of job and not being able to pursue your passions because you're pregnant with the child of a man who won't give you a second glance. I personally believe that, in this scene, Beatrice thought Henrietta might grow to hate her own child because she would have missed out on a lot of things, just like Beatrice herself did with Bojack. Beatrice didn't want this to happen, so despite the fact that this girl slept with her husband, she wanted to give Henrietta the chance she could have had herself. And as for the baby, it'll have a chance at gaining happiness. A slim one, but a chance nonetheless.
@Papanda19957 жыл бұрын
I think in a way she felt like it would make up for her own regrets. If she had the chance to go back and change everything, she would, but she can’t. So, instead, when the exact same situation came up again, she was determined to choose differently this time, even though she was choosing for someone else. I don’t think she was really doing it for Henrietta out of sympathy, as much as getting as close as she could to undoing her own “mistakes”
@MaartenvanRossemLezingen7 жыл бұрын
No, she regrets the things she's done in these memories. Someone made a very good analysis about this on KZbin. In her memories, the people she can't remember simply have no face, they're not important, but Henrietta does have a face, however someone crossed it out with a pen. In life, just like with a pen, you can't erase the mistakes you've made, the lines on Henrietta's face symbolize pen strokes. Abortion is one thing, but giving birth to a baby and seeing it taken away from you right in front of your eyes that's traumatizing as hell. Hence when Beatrice takes away Henrietta's baby the pen scrabbles try to obstruct the entire screen as Henrietta starts screaming, cause Beatrice regrets what she's done to her. You could see the same pen scrabbles when Beatrice's dad threw her doll into the fire. Not my theory but I completely agree with it. Abortion may have been a good option here, but taking away a baby from a screaming mother is NEVER a good idea. Henrietta clearly wanted the baby though, and she already had a picture of her and knew her sex, so I think even abortion would have been traumatizing here.

I have so many conflicting feelings about Beatrice. It's the part of parenthood that no one likes to talk about: it completely consumes you. It doesn’t matter how much you love your child: once you've had children, that role of "parent" is now 80% of your life. For PC, that was great, because that consistent love & connection was really what she needed. However, Beatrice obviously had a strong soul from a young age, & particularly from the whole thing with Crackerjack & their mother, it's totally understandable that she'd view motherhood as a burden. It's not that she hated Bojack; it's just that Bojack is a never-ending reminder of the life she never had, & she projects that onto him. Not that that excuses any of her actions, but she's just as tragic as Bojack, if not more-so

For Beatrice, is was her triangle, and for Henrietta it was her hair. Beatrice quickly realizes this and Henrietta sounds surprised that she knew that. This show is constantly amazing

It was interesting seeing this show how abusive and mostrous people are also capable of care and humanity. It doesn’t take away from the evil they do to others but it does show that they're not innate monsters, that in different circumstances they could have been better.

One detail that it took a while for me to notice, the traits Butterscotch says his mother has (Beatrice’s diamond and Henrietta’s brown hair) also describe Hollyhock which seems to imply she looks a decent amount like her grandmother

I remember there was one comment I came across that in this particular episode that was mainly focused on Beatrice, Henrietta’s face was the only one that had the black squiggle line over it while the others just had blank faces, which symbolizes that she remembered Henrietta but wanted to forget her, while the blank faces showed that she didn’t remember them

Guys this thought came across my head and I just wanted to share it with this community. I’m not much of a great analyzer but this thought just hit me. We all know that Henrietta has her face scratched out and then that line transitions to the scene of baby Beatrice crying in pain for her baby. We all know that those two scenes are connected and while there has been many great explanations to why that is no one ever mentioned guilt... Beatrice as a child felt so much guilt and shame for not being able to protect her baby. The same guilt she feels as an adult when she took Henrietta’s baby away. In her heart she BELIEVED she did the right thing but something in her soul still ate at her and that was guilt. Deep down she knew a child had to be with their mother but that never ending internalizing fear that loving someone will hurt them outweighed reason. Beatrice feels so much guilt for not being able to protect her childhood baby and now... she feels so much guilt.... towards what she did to Henrietta. Besides I love the way the emphasis guilt in this episode. Guilt is something you don’t want to stare at in the eyes so you avoid it at all cost. Beatrice went to the grave with that guilt still believing she did the right thing but the guilt will always remain. She never accepted her mistake because again how can you accept a mistake when you truly believe you did the right thing? Beatrice was hurt as a child. Her father burned her baby of course she was only going to follow what she was taught. Unlike her father however she felt guilt. But didn’t understand her emotions because her father always told her “crying is stupid.” And “control your woman emotion you don’t want to end up like your mother right?” That’s a lot... for a child.... I love Beatrice. She didn’t deserve to die alone in that hospice. She was just.... a scared little girl in a grown woman’s body. Of course it doesn’t justify the pain she cause Bojack not saying that but she just became more human to me. Or rather I see that scared little girl. How can anyone hate a child right ? I see Bea’s inner child begging for help.

Beatrice has a lot of complex emotions about Henrietta. She hates her, she loves her dearly, she is jealous of her, and yet she wants to give her the life she could never have. So it's easier for her to forget Henrietta than try and reconcile all of that.

I actually have a lot of respect for Beatrice in this scene. She sounds mean, but she really wants Henrietta to follow her dreams and do well in life instead of having a child and being part of its trauma like she did with BoJack. She has a lot of care and sympathy.

This scene is so interesting in how it portrays Beatrice as both in the right and in the wrong at the same time for numerous reasons: In a way, she is in the right because she knew from past experiences that Henrietta could have very easily ended up like Beatrice and Bojack: A bitter old woman and an unwanted child. Beatrice didn't want Henrietta to repeat her mistakes, a path Henrietta was already on with Butterscotch. A blank slate was what Henrietta and her baby needed. But Beatrice is, in a way, also in the wrong because she is only looking at the situation from her own perspective specifically. She's pushing her own past traumas onto Henrietta and assuming she will end up just like Beatrice. Beatrice doesn't stop to consider that maybe with proper help and reassurance or something, Henrietta could have ended up differently. And that makes sense because Beatrice was not brought up to be considerate of others, she was not brought up to be reassuring, and was taught that there is only one way to see the world.

It's just not realistic to keep the baby and follow the career at the same time. Not only she's clearly low income so she won't be able to get a nanny, but also being a nurse is EXTREMELY demanding so i doubt she would even have enough time to find a partner she can trust on the baby's first years, all of this without mentioning that she hasn't finished college yet and how costy is to have a child. Henrietta's chances of providing a happy life for her daughter and for herself were extremely low.

@princessseraphina89903 жыл бұрын
Beatrice was right though. Henrietta would not have been able to care for hollyhock in her state of income. Providing the child with food, clothes, medicine and education, it just would not have worked if she had kept hollyhock. She would have had to given up going to nursing school just to take care of the child, instead of pursuing her dream as a nurse and had become miserable. Just like Beatrice, with her bachelor's degree she would have gotten a very good career but because she chose to marry butterscotch and gave birth to bojack and became a terrible mother she became miserable. So if you think about it Beatrice was doing Henrietta a favor. At least in the end hollyhock grew up with eight kind and generous fathers and she reunited with Henrietta thanks to bojack finding her

I've been watching clips of Bojack to remember details that I might have missed the first time and I finally got the answer to one of my questions that I thought the answer to was "lazy character design" which was never satisfactory to me when it's this show. I've always been confused as to why Hollyhock has a diamond on her head despite not being related to Bojack or Beatrice by blood. Before this I watched a clip where Butterscotch tells Beatrice that his mom had a diamond "just like hers." Apparently that wasn't a lie because I just realized that Hollyhock inherited her grandmother's diamond.

I find it weird how Henrietta is just being kinda shameless about it. Like she can’t even approach Butterscotch, she had to go to the wife who she helped to cheat on She didn’t even just apologize but still made excuses like it wasn’t wrong because Butterscotch was so nice to her and then still beg for help Beatrice is not a good person but I felt bad for her
@evanderzufarsetiawan25112 жыл бұрын
Maybe she think apologizing is not enough and yes henrietta was wrong for that but then again beatrice didn't care if butterscotch have an affair with other woman. Beatrice probably knew from the start butterscotch having an affair with henrietta and she didn't care. Actually beatrice who approach henrietta not henrietta approaching beatrice. Butterscotch is manipulative and he doesn't come up as this poison man instead he come up as this badboy persona. Henrietta didn't apologize she did apologize

I hate Beatrice, she's a horrible mother, but she has some really good moments, she knows how Henrietta's life would go down and stops her from becoming the bitter and antagonistic person she is.
