@jordannewitt5 жыл бұрын
@@lettylunasical4766 i reckon it'll be an interesting bit of irony if Sarah Lynne's mom tries to make some legal case against Bojack or a huge cancel campaign. It's not like I want Bojack to 'beat this thing'. He fucked up and should pay the consequences but it'd be pretty cathartic to see Bojack call out the mum for her emotional abuse of Sarah Lynne, and the implied abuse of her stepfather
@Torthrodhel5 жыл бұрын
@@jordannewitt I could see that happening, too. Bojack's exactly the kind of person to call other peoples' shit out on his way down, been a character trait of his since the 2nd episode of the 1st season. And not a negative one either. Actually it might be a big part of what kept him likeable enough to keep us going through all the horrible stuff. It's a way in which unlike most other ways, he's always been brutally honest even to the point of personal misfortune - when it's someone else's lies being called out.

I loved the nods they gave to mental illness: I think it's the first time they've properly mentioned depression; Diane self-loathing and explaining side-effects of anti-depressants; Gina's PTSD; Hollyhock's anxiety attack with Pete's real coping strategy of naming objects in the room.
@roseolivas085 жыл бұрын
I also love how the juxtapose it with “trendy” depression that Joel and Mr PB are capitalizing on with Diane’s actual depression. It’s a difficult topic to touch on and I’m excited to see what they do with it.
@randomystick5 жыл бұрын
Was interesting to me how in "Face of Depression" the title refers to PB, but his story was just the B-plot and it's Bojack whom we follow throughout the episode - bojack was the true face of depression. In addition, bojack and diane are the only two characters who undergone facial changes, illustrating how the "faces of depression" truly appear (as white hair on a person past his prime/weight gain from antidepressants)
@stardestroya155 жыл бұрын
The coping strategy gave me an even more fondness for the respect that this show treats mental illness. From a writing perspective, they could have just had Pete say something like "calm down, your're gonna be fine," but this show pays so much attention to detail, and the inclusion of that very real coping strategy is one of my favorite moments of the series.

I kind of teared up at the church scene when the actor pastor said to bojack thank you for finding refuge at their show and that they start again in 30 mins. One note I love: while Peter doesn’t go by his silly nickname anymore, he actually does more “repeating” than ever: His coping mechanism for anxiety is to state the things around him. A coping mechanism is something you *repeat* He causes Holly to repeat her name when they were introducing themselves His stating of how beer becomes “okayer” overtime - encouraging the repeat of an action When he’s recounting the story, his vocal performance has noticeable stutters, and the reassurance of “its fine, it’s fine” And the biggest meta clincher: because of him, he’s probably gonna cause bojack to confront, relive, *repeat* a haunting memory. Cause he retold it Unintentionally he did become Pete Repeat
@Distant_View5 жыл бұрын
best comment here, super underappreciated!

The only thing really «pete repeat-y» about this is the stutters. There’s nothing significant about repeating coping mechanisms etc. Those are just facts about things as they repeat, tying that to pete is far fetched. This is like the «69+69=whatever so therefore illuminati» logic 😂
@Torthrodhel5 жыл бұрын
@@Katalystic well okay if you wanna be so dismissive then fine but I know from personal experience that I used to have a keenness to develop a wacky persona as a kind of coping mechanism (might not have worked, but still was one of the things I first thought to do). People are theorising about Bojack drowning at the end of the series because of the title sequence and that he'll maybe relapse to suicide... Yunno I think you're totally on to something. Ruthie tearing up the Bojack treading water in the painting he gave to her and they don't ever show it being fixed. Ruthie (youngest character on the show and a literal baby, full of innocence and hope) doing that is very symbolic imo, especially since that painting has been in the background for quite some time. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but it feels connected somehow.
@MissLolaRaven5 жыл бұрын
@@prufrockj.a8532 the painting resembles the Narcissus myth (like PC recalled), Ruthie (new life and in process of grown in up, demonstrated by the first steps she made) tearing up the reflection of BoJack (Narcissus) could mean that BoJack is no longer the egocentric and narcissistic person he was before, but he has to rebuild himself and his ego (inner being, personality and, actually, his complete life) to face his true self again and start again as a new reform horseman... That is what I can guess about that sequence
@prufrockj.a85325 жыл бұрын
@@MissLolaRaven Yeah the comparisons to Narcissus were explicitly stated but I always thought that painting had a deeper level of subtext. To me it also represented Bojack contemplating whether or not to save himself. Now that there is no longer a Bojack struggling to stay afloat, it feels like Bojack is simply looking into the pool and considering his life rather than wondering whether to save himself from his own horrible actions. Many people think that painting is an indication that the show will end with Bojack drowning but now since we no longer have Bojack treading water (due to his sobriety) it feels like he has a new lease on life , like he has been reborn.

Anyone else feel tired of all the suicide theorizing? It seems like the most popular wanted ending for the show, but personally I feel like it would be really unsatisfying? I much rather would want Bojack to face his consequences for everything he’s done instead of trying to run or hide from it. People keep pointing to s5 and saying Bojack is going to get away with everything again because no one’s going to hold him accountable, but I feel like that’s the ending. Bojack is going to hold himself accountable for what he’s done. I think he’s going to lose the last thing he has that ties him to his old self, his fame. He won’t be known as the horse from horsin’ around anymore, but rather the “guy who let Sarah Lynn overdose” and likewise. And weirdly I feel like that’s when Bojack might be at peace with himself. In fact, I think the only thing that will really hurt him at this point is the idea of losing Hollyhock. Because this is definitely going to damage their relationship.

All of those lows have been stepping stones that lead to other moments, some of them for the better. To me, the show is about trying to be better, even in a complicated and messy world, even when it feels like you've done too much to ever forgive yourself, even when you fall off the wagon and slide backwards so hard that you seriously damage the people you care about. Yeah, you'll mess up, you'll make mistakes, and some of those mistakes will have consequences that can't be fixed. But as long as you get back up and improve again, little by little, you can be ok and you can minimize the damage you cause. I think the most satisfying ending is for Bojack to hold himself accountable and weather the storm that it brings. That might mean jail time, it might mean losing the people he cares about, it might mean moving somewhere far away, but whatever it ends up meaning, this series doesn't feel like a suicide note to me. Besides, suicide means not bearing responsibility and that seems like the opposite of what this story means.
@lagon78305 жыл бұрын
If Pete tells hollyhock and that destroys their relationship, I think that would result in suicide. If he loses hollyhock, does he have anything left? That's the only outcome I believe would be realistic if pete fingers him... I think the suicide theory is running rampant because it's the most likely outcome from a realistic perspective. Bojack has made an incredible change so far, but there will always be that part of him that's prone to depression and substance abuse. That's why it's so easy for people to fall off the wagon. All it takes is 1 event or coming into contact with a formerly abused substance once and all that change goes away. I believe fans dont think that if bojack relapses, he will get past it again.

.I thought the scene with "reformed" nun Margo Martindale was the one most telling for the direction we're now going to go with this episode and maybe rest of the season as a whole. What's sad and equally funny is when confronted with her past actions and the idea that she can't make it up to those she has hurt, she sinks back into bad behavior almost immediately. I'm hoping that won't be the case for BoJack! Keep up the great videos dude ^_^

You know, the idea of all of this coming out and having real concequences is really appealing, but it was kinda foreshadowed that this isn't going to happen. Bojack might end up having social ramifications like losing his sister ect, but he will not face jail time. Maybe he'll want to go to jail, but remember what happened with that hippo, hank. Nobody would believe he did wrong and there were no concequences for him. And when Bojack begged Diane to expose him so he can be held responcible for what he did to Gina, she straight up told him that nobody would hold him responcible. If i had to guess what'll happen: Bojack is going to suffer from his guilt alone. Nobody will punish him but his own mind. He is going to continue to try to help the people around him and make sure he leaves them better instead of worse. After that, the now grey haired bojack will do what he said he'd do one day. He'll go out swimming, possibly at the lake where his family home used to be and he will let himself drown. The most permanent and conclusive ending thier can be to the series as a whole.

Star Platinum: The World The painting is meant to represent his depression. He’s seeing himself drowning but he’s not doing anything but looking. I could see them annoying some people, but I absolutely LOVE the high-register mid-Atlantic trashtalk! -And of course BoJack's journey. My prediction for the ending was that BoJack would finally become better, and at long last find happiness, only to have chaos return from his past and result in his untimely death. It looks like that may happen, or possibly worse: he becomes happy, and then has it all taken away. It may even start the entire cycle of his life (and the series over again...)

@@CmdrRenegade Eh...the show has always used water and drowning as metaphors for depression (this is most obvious during Bojack's speech at his mother's funeral). Honestly I highly doubt they’ll go for a death/suicide ending. It’d be too expected and wouldn’t be satisfying. It sounds like a good ending for a show like this in theory, but really it would just be an easy way to end the show. I think they’re gonna go more for an ending where all of his sins come to light, but he’s learned to stop running from it all and instead faces them and chooses to change, even if others resent him for it / never forgive him.

@@jordanbaker9390, I disagree it's an easy way to end the show. How many cartoon protagonists do you know that have killed themselves?
@jordanbaker93905 жыл бұрын
Megabyte - It’s not a common way to end a show, but I feel like it’d be too easy for this one. Like Bojack has done a lot of shitty things but we see that he’s trying to change and in this season he has made change. Why throw that away with a suicide? I think if the show had continued in a negative spiral, with Bojack continuing to make mistakes & fuck up people’s lives and never doing anything to change it, a suicide would have made a bit more sense. Assuming everything finally caught up to him, he’d see no other way out. But instead Bojack has made an effort to change and I think him living out his days with guilt and regret, but also peace and happiness knowing he did make changes and become better over time, would be a much better and more satisfying ending. But in the end that’s the decision of the creators & I know they’ll make it wonderful either way - if they do decide to make it a suicide ending, I’m sure they’ll do it well and in a way I’m sure I can appreciate or enjoy.
