@annieo6527 Жыл бұрын
Yes, in hindsight that made an already sad scene even sadder. Thorne sitting there happily making all kinds of plans for the future, dreaming about him and Macy having a long music career to tell their children about, and the viewers knowing that time will kill pretty much every one of those hopes and dreams of his.

Yes it’s sad to think about how hard they fought to be together.(remember the prison storyline, and they where talking about the future, long honeymoon, build in recording studio, and lots of room for their children. After everything they had been through they deserved to be happy for a longer time then they’ve been and have a family of their own!! The writers missed a big oppurtinity here. As a big Bobbie&Jeff fan, and Thorne and Macy i’ve always hated they always seemed to be in the shadow of Ridge and Brooke when it comes to storylines and screentime. Can you imagine how cute, beautiful and talented their kids would have been😊😍

@parker341 And yet, you get an episode featuring these 2 great characters, and Sally being at some of her best, and you comment on Brooke who is not even in the episode.(Of course you can comment on whoever you like) Maybe it isn't so wrong that the show is "all about Brooke" with all the reaction she generates. Besides, Stephanie was always heavily featured and utilized well (in my opinion) during the time she was in the show. (Besides maybe when the actress was on vacation which also applies to Brooke's actress)
@parker341 Жыл бұрын
@@marn25 I made a comparison to Brooke because I know the show becomes all about her later on and I don't like that. Watching the scene with Sally and Eric today, I was marveling at how GOOD Darlene Conley is. The mellifluous voice, the mannerisms, the way she dominates the screen through sheer force of personality and charisma. I'm sorry but KKL just doesn't have that.
@marn25 Жыл бұрын
@@parker341 This weaker actress though played a central character from the very first episode of this show, who remained central, and as I said plays her well enough to generate all kinds of emotions from the viewers. She may not be as good as Susan Flannery (that's impossible concerning all actors in the show), but together they created some of the most unforgettable moments in this show. And she didn't spoil any for Susan Flannery so she can't be that weak. Now, I am not sure why they lessened Darlene Conley's part in later years and had her cool down before her departure. Wasn't the case with SF and fortunately and we had her in her full glory till the very end. And as far as I know it was her decision to leave. Could they find another SF? Not sure about that.

I am only just now realizing that the show is doing this "thematic connection" thing again with the two conversations on the plane! Eric and Thorne are both speaking optimistically about the future (Eric taking about putting his differences with Sally aside, and Thorne talking about his and Macy's bright future as singers), while Sally and Macy both have a secret that they know will jeopardize the very thing that the men are talking about (Sally's involvement in Dylan's trial means she will not be able to put aside her differences with the Forresters, and Macy's illness may well prevent her and Thorne from having the singing career they want). So in both conversations, there is a dissonance between what the Forrester men _believe_ and what the Spectra women _know._

I still say, instead of the writers giving Steph this Jessica story, it should have been Steph to start getting suspicious by Taylor's papers being left in Morocco, then Ridge and Brooke being invited to Morocco, then the prince in Morocco getting married to someone who from the nose bridge up looks suspiciously like Taylor. One thing Steph can do, is put 2 and 2 together faster than anyone else. Instead of staying home to babysit Jessica, she could have been on a flight to Morocco to investigate her suspicions.. Which would have been a very plausible reason for missing Thorne's concert as she would put Taylor over Thorne any day lol
@NewYorkNick0607 Жыл бұрын
YES! The way to make the Morocco storyline compelling would've been to make it another battleground between Stephanie and Brooke. It should've always been Stephanie discovering Taylor is alive and trying to bring her home vs Brooke discovering Taylor is alive and trying to prevent her from revealing it to Ridge. Instead they sidelined Stephanie for most of it and when she does find out, she's inexplicably on Brooke's side for a while thus draining the story of ANY momentum.

*Romeo and Juliet, take two* I have mentioned the Shakespearean references in Thorne and Macy's storyline before, and how their dynamic tends to go back and forth between Romeo/Juliet and Othello/Desdemona (with Macy occasionally turning into Ophelia when she's at a low point in her trajectory). We are now clearly in a phase where the emphasis is on the parallels between Thorne and Macy and Romeo and Juliet, which is quite natural because that trope fits the _early_ stages of a relationship - it was highlighted when Thorne and Macy first fell in love in 1990, and now during their "new beginning" it comes back into focus (while Thorne's Othello-like mistrust and false accusations took center stage when their first marriage started disintegrating). This episode is almost entirely dedicated to making the Romeo/Juliet parallel as explicit as possible in order to make it the focal point of the Rotterdam concert. we have Don and Gordon literally referring to Thorne and Macy as "two star-crossed lovers", and Eric and Sally discussing the rivalry of their two -households alike in dignity- successful design houses, as well as recapping how Thorne and Macy suffered as a result of that rivalry and expressing wishes that it could be different (although we know it won't be, due to Sally's involvement in Dylan's trial). The "fateful romance" aspect is reinforced further by Ridge (of all people) commenting that Thorne and Macy can't get over each other and how Macy would do _anything_ for Thorne, just as we see her covering up her illness, and possibly risking her life, in order to go through with the concert. And meanwhile even the suggestion of a tragic end like Romeo and Juliet's is hinted at (although jokingly) by Thorne, as he talks about the two of them being inseparable to the point that if a bus hits Macy, it will hit him too. But of course we know that while Thorne is only joking about the two of them dying together, Macy is the one who worries that she may _actually_ die. And this is reflected in their final scene, as Thorne goes to sleep with a happy smile on his face while Macy sits next to him hiding her tears. But the Romeo and Juliet references are not the only hints that we are now in the middle of Thorne and Macy's "second act" - pretty much _every single plot point_ in their current storyline is a reimagined variation of something that happened in their "first act" (which ended in early 1994). Even Macy's throat tumor fits this pattern. The way it plays out clearly recalls her alcoholism storyline from 1993 just before she crashed the car and nearly got herself (and Kevin) killed - she has a serious health problem, but hides it from Thorne in order not to disappoint him and not to disrupt what she is hoping will be a reconciliation between them. Even the way she handles the inhaler - keeping it hidden in her purse and sneaking away to use it when nobody sees her - is similar to how she would secretly take a sip of alcohol from a bottle when she thought nobody was watching.
@NewYorkNick0607 Жыл бұрын
Brilliant Annie! And Thorne and Macy's wedding will be interrupted when Thorne is accused of murder just as Romeo & Juliet's marriage is immediately threatened when Romeo kills Tybalt.
@TriniT21 Жыл бұрын
Such a good read! You took me back to my days of literature class and writing essays about the books I loved. ❤ BTW. I have never ever seen the "star crossed lovers" theme between Ridge and Brooke that they keep trying to convince us is there. But Thorne and Macy def are the star crossed lovers of the soap, and have been so from the beginning.
@annieo6527 Жыл бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607 yes, you are right! I didn't think of how there was also a murder charge against Romeo as well at the end of Romeo and Juliet's story, and how that separated them and eventually led to that one final fatal miscommunication. In that light, what follows with Thorne and Macy could be seen as a "subverted Romeo and Juliet story" as there is the murder subplot, the separation, and also the setup for a potential major misunderstanding, but then Macy actually manages to _avert_ this and the story takes a completely different turn from there.
@annieo6527 Жыл бұрын
@@TriniT21 good point about Ridge and Brooke - I think they don't at all fit the definition of "star-crossed lovers" because they are not being kept apart by outside forces but by their own deliberate choices. Ridge frequently _chooses_ to marry someone else, for example. Thorne and Macy, on the other hand, _want_ to be together, but are being kept apart by factors that they don't have the power to control (even though some of those factors actually exist _inside_ them, like Thorne's lack of trust or Macy's alcoholism), and often give the impression of being stuck in that "evil Super Mario game" someone (Nick, was it you?) mentioned a while ago.

So great to have a (mainly) Thorne and Macy focused episode. The drunken interactions between Sally and Eric were fun, the affectionate interactions between Thorne and Macy were poignant and moving, and for once Ridge and Stephanie had to acknowledge Thorne's existence😂. It's a solemn reminder of what this show could have been had it positioned Thorne and Macy as its core duo, as opposed to Ridge and Brooke. A couple to genuinly root for, as well as some much needed warmth and humor. What a show that would have been.
@annieo6527 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I enjoyed this episode too! I think the show would have benefited from balancing the Ridge/Brooke/Taylor part and the Thorne/Macy/Spectra part more evenly. The former often feels like it has redundant scenes, and the latter often feels like there are scenes _missing._ And I always preferred Macy's character over Brooke or Taylor - she has a "realness" to her that those characters don't. It would also have been nice for these two sides of the show to be more connected - at this point they actually feel almost like two separate shows (for example, Brooke and Macy have _never_ had a conversation).
@leviaj1 Жыл бұрын
@@annieo6527 agreed. What was needed was a finer balancing act between the storylines, as well as more engagement between them. Unfortunately when Brooke and Macy do interact it's as rivals. It would have been nice to see their relationship move beyond that.

@@leviaj1 though in a way I find it hard to imagine Brooke and Macy being anything _but_ rivals.
