*Rick and Brooke: Family Loyalty vs Romantic Love* The fact that Rick is a child of divorce and wants to give his son the family life he never had makes this storyline richer and more poignant. It makes sense that his motivations now would be informed by that childhood experience. Despite his young age, Rick actually has a more mature concept of family and love than his mother - he’s basically saying to her that there are different kinds of love, not just romantic love, and that there are more honorable choices in life than merely following one’s heart. This aligns Rick more with Stephanie and Taylor than his mother. Indeed Brooke has always been a character who follows her heart regardless of morals or consequences. For Brooke, leaving her son’s father (Eric) to pursue his brother (Ridge) was justified because of True Love. For Rick, staying with the mother of his child and being a father to his child is more important. And this also explains why Brooke opposes Amber despite their similar backgrounds (outsiders, trying to take a Forrester prince away from his princess, using a baby to trap him). Remember Brooke always saw herself as the heroine in a romantic drama, she never saw herself as the antagonist when she was trying to break up Ridge and Taylor (and even now when she’s trying to break up Thorne and Macy). For Brooke, Amber is standing in the way of True Love and it’s worth breaking up Little Eric’s family so Rick and Kimberly can be together. That’s why the most important question for Brooke is, “Do you love Amber the same way you love Kimberly?” And when Rick replies, “Do you love Bridget the same way you love me?” he's not evading the question. Rick is trying to explain to his mother that there are different kinds of love in the world. And since Rick opened the door to his childhood in this scene, we can’t ignore another aspect of that question. When Rick was a child, his mother prioritized Bridget over him so that she could have Ridge. Bridget was the golden child who could reunite her with her True Love. That must have left an impression on Rick just as his parents divorce did. What Rick probably took from that experience was, “My mother loves Bridget more but she still loves me in her own way.” And that’s what he’s also thinking now when he chooses family loyalty over romantic love: “I love Kimberly more but I still love Amber in my own way.”

Wonderful analysis Nick! 👏👏👏 Rick's desire to make the "honorable" decision resonates with these characters' histories on so many levels. There's Brooke divorcing Rick's father, breaking up Rick's family in her pursuit of "true love", and the lack of stability that led to for Rick and Bridget when they were growing up. It's understandable that Rick would _not_ want to repeat that pattern. But there's also the example of Eric and _Stephanie._ When Stephanie got pregnant at 17, Eric made the "honorable" decision by marrying her even though he may have been more "in (romantic) love" with Beth - and as a result, ended up with a successful life (four children growing up in a stable environment, a career, social status, a devoted loving wife who was the best thing that ever happened to him). It took a long time for Eric to realize that this was the right decision, but in this season, he has (which is confirmed by his remarrying Stephanie). And Stephanie's support of Rick and Amber can also be seen in this light - she knows that the "honorable choice" can actually end up being the _right_ choice for everyone involved, and that merely "following one's heart" the way Brooke does is not the way to stability and a happy family life.

Great Nick, I was shocked by Rick's question about Brooke's love for her children! Wow who wrote this stuff knew the history of the show better than the writers of the 8/ 9 seasons. Brooke also asked him if he is "having fun"other than accomplish his obligations as father, husband and student. I know that he is in that young age where it is a right having fun. But as you said she couldn't understand Rick's commitment to his life and people that are involved. Brooke, Eric, Ridge have a lot of faults because they often ignored Rick, they were completely taken by Bridget during the two paternity tests SLS and more.

@@annieo6527 Thanks guys! ❤ Yes Annie, good point about Eric and Stephanie's history being a part of this story as well. And again that ties Rick to Stephanie, the "traditional/obligation" side, rather than his mother's "romantic/individualism" side.

@@babs4848 It's so interesting because it's easy to view Brooke as being hypocritical when it comes to Amber (i.e. not recognizing that she was the same way using a child to trap Ridge that wasn't his) but the character dynamics actually explain why Brooke wouldn't see it that way. She doesn't see herself as Amber because she views Amber as standing in the way of True Love and individual happiness and romantic pursuit is what drives Brooke's character. She wants Rick to be more like her and choose his own desires over his obligation to Eric Jr.

My gawd, this show was so good back in the day. Nothing compared to the garbage we're fed now on a daily basis. So many characters, so many storylines, so many different decors and angles. 🥰

Funny watching Brooke here with Rick, all concerned bc something is hurting him, while simultaneously watching season 8 with same Brooke pretty much ignoring the hurt Eric Jr was going thru at 11 years old. 😒 It's also clear that Rick is a pretty messed up kid, and it is bc of his childhood. He continues to struggle with that, bc he still loves his mom despite whatever he may be feeling about his childhood.

🎯 We had the same thought Trish! I just wrote something about that too. I love that they're actually playing that beat with Rick and his childhood. It makes them feel more like characters rather than just cogs in the plot machinery. This season is very well written in terms of story structure, archetypes, and character history (only the dialogue is laughably bad sometimes LOL).

@@NewYorkNick0607 ah I just read it! And very well put, esp the part about bridgit vs rick. I also found it interesting hearing Brooke bad talk Amber lol. Be nice if Brooke had a moment of reflection, in regards to Stephanie felt the same way about Brooke as Brooke did about Amber. Rick was more insightful than Brooke ever was. So, Amber/Rick/Kimberly was Brooke/Ridge/Taylor in the 90s.
