Watching Tawny, Kimberly and Amber trying to out-soap each other is just so entertaining!

“Yet you are the *Good Girl. Princess* Kimberly.” (13:15) Amber just validated one of my longest running observations about this show! 🤩 🙌

YES! I thought about our discussion from the other day when she said that! Princess Kimberly being the (not so) Good Girl.

*Rick's Fantasies: Amber vs Kimberly* Rick's competing fantasies mark him as a character with subjectivity and tell a clear story: a nightmarish life of obligation with Amber vs a dreamy life of pleasure with Kimberly. It's undeniable that Rick loves Kimberly more and would rather be with her. But as I wrote in episode 3180, Rick has a very mature outlook on love and life and he views family loyalty as a worthier choice than romantic love. And despite the nightmare/daydream frame of the fantasies, there's a subtle hint that choosing Kimberly isn't necessarily better than choosing Amber. In the first fantasy, Rick's hectic household prevents him from studying and causes him to miss an exam. The implication is that Rick can't achieve full academic potential because of the pressures of being a young husband and father. And yet in the second fantasy, where he's free from those pressures, Rich chooses not to study so he can spend time with Kimberly! The distraction of family obligation is replaced by the distraction of romantic love but it's still a distraction. And while Rick is happy to forego studying in the second fantasy, the end result is the same i.e. he's not going to do well on his exam. In this way, the fantasies render Rick's choice between Amber and Kimberly not as one between achieving and not achieving his full potential, but simply one between family loyalty and romantic love.

There is one more twist to these "fantasy sequences" though - they are being _narrated to Rick by Brooke!_ They are not actually Rick's own fantasies, but his mental images of the stories that Brooke is telling him. In fact, after the first sequence, Rick even objects that his life with Amber really isn't as bad as Brooke imagines. And the second sequence is clearly colored by what _Brooke_ imagines to be an "ideal relationship", with Rick and Kimberly behaving very much like _Brooke and Ridge._ As for the studying, it is actually clear that in the second fantasy, Rick is _already done studying_ (because he knows the atomic mass of lead) - in this sequence, he is an overachiever who will succeed even if he doesn't study all night. It is _Kimberly_ who foregoes studying in order to romance Rick, showing how Brooke sees Kimberly as nothing but a means to an end for Rick's happily ever after. Another nice detail showing that the fantasies are Brooke's is that Rick is studying for a _chemistry_ exam, which is Brooke's idea of what one does in college since she is a chemist.

@@annieo6527 That's brilliant! You're right. I totally missed that it was Brooke incepting those fantasies into Rick's head. That's what happens when you're half watching on your phone while trying to wrap up work and shuffle your things/self into a cab. 😆

@@NewYorkNick0607 yes, these evening/night premieres do present a bit of a challenge. I am able to watch the S13 episodes undisturbed at night right before going to sleep, but usually write additional comments and replies the next morning because writing essays past midnight is not good for my productivity the next day. 😂

The Kimberly vs Amber storyline was entertaining the way the two of them fought and argued over Rick Forrester it was too much

I remember seeing that final scene in that year. With Tawny holding a gun on Kimberly.
