*Stephanie puts Brooke to the test* The Queen/Se r vant dynamic between Stephanie and Brooke continues in this episode, and is even taken to extremes, with Brooke giving Stephanie a pedicure. Of course it's mainly played for laughs, but there is a moment at the end, when Brooke leaves, that Stephanie looks genuinely worried. Stephanie didn't do this to hu mi li ate Brooke, she did it to _test_ her. She knows that Brooke is after something, and she wants to see just how far Brooke will go to achieve it. And the fact that Brooke is willing to go _this_ far unsettles Stephanie, because it can only mean that what Brooke wants from Stephanie is something very serious indeed.

Good analysis of the dynamics of this scene! And (for any Y&R viewers who are reading this), the scene is also a reference to the iconic Katherine vs Jill rivalry on Bill Bell's other soap. Jill famously began as a manicurist for Katherine and eventually insinuated herself into Katherine's life and stole her husband. Stephanie and Brooke have often been compared to Katherine and Jill but there's a crucial class difference. Brooke began as middle class, and as a chemist she was even upwardly mobile. While her trajectory may have followed a similar path to Jill (getting pregnant by a rich married man, taking him from his wife, and later getting part of his company), a critical feature of Brooke's character is that she looks down on characters who are seen as low class (like Sally). Thus Brooke giving Stephanie a pedicure goes against this important character/class trait which makes it even more unsettling for Stephanie and tips her off that something is up.

@@NewYorkNick0607 interesting comparison! I am not very familiar with Y&R, so these connections are new to me! It seems like there have been several occasions when a storyline on B&B was inspired by one on Y&R. And it's so true about Brooke - we see that she absolutely does _not_ want to do this pedicure (while a character like, say, Darla would not only be comfortable but enthusiastic doing it).

I know it has to be seen an intentionally a funny scene. But, when I think about Stephanie my mind goes to the first seasons, she was so cold and classy. The pedicure is not classy at all even if it is intentionally wanted by Stephanie. Then Brooke is on her knees...

@@babs4848 good point! I have said before that this season is very strong in terms of narrative structure, but sometimes at the expense of characterization. That is, the characters don't _exactly_ behave out of character, but their established character traits and dynamics are being exaggerated, and they sometimes go to the very periphery of what they as characters are capable of. We see it in both Brooke and Stephanie in this scene, and in others as well later on.

10:41 "Stephanie I never did that." Cut to the 1995 episodes where every other sentence from Brooke involves "the children" when talking to Ridge. I think her old age is catching up to her, she really can't remember.

Yes! It really adds new layers to the show when watching two parallel seasons because it is so clear who is being a reliable narrator and who isn't.

I can't believe that Rick does end up with Amber for a brief while. I remember when Shelia's daughter came to town I was hoping she would break them up for good since Rick was so dense and Kimberly ended up going down a dark path.
