What a magnificent arrangement. I buried my brother on Sunday, September 22. We are played this song at the burial. I’m still reeling. Thank you for the beautiful music. 😮

This song has haunted me for several years now.....it never ends in my mind...like an old friend. Concertina brings out the sentimental lonesome in me.

@@himanshu7103 I was listening to this song and scrolled down to see dpolands comment which was a surprise as he was a close friend. He was a magnificent fiddle player, the best! Sadly he very recently passed away. The world lost a wonderful musician and I lost a dear friend. He made a CD called Appalachian Field Trip, so you could have and opportunity to hear him and find out who he was.

I was looking for a version by The Wailin' Jennys and discovered Kate's amazing version. Her pure voice is a treat for ear and soul. Yes. Please. Come to America.

Once upon a time, my wife left, to go work in Hong Kong for half-a-year, halfway around the world from me. I'd never been, and could not fathom where she was in the world, only knowing that each night as i closed my front door on the California coast, I'd look off into the sunset to the west and imagine I could smell her skin on the breeze off the Pacific. A month or so into her move, decidedly not my usual happy self, I did this song at Open Mic night for all of our friends, changing the chorus to "Bold Holly", of course, and wound up singing and crying at the same time. This song will forever be about my wife, for me. : ) Oh, surprise, I'm crying now... Thank you, Kate Rusby. You are _astonishing_.

My mom was a wonderful folk singer, and one of the only songs she sung in english (she was primarily a macedonian artist) was this one. It's such a special audio for me, especially since her friends (also musicians) played it for her memorial. When I hear it, I think of my mom tenderly saying goodbye to me. I miss you so much. I will never not love you.

Sadness and melancholy prevail in this traditional and Kate's crystal voice matches perfectly, a gift she apparently inherited from her mother. God bless the Rusby family, they're a treat to humanity and they make my life bearable.

Love this cover! Similar to Wailin' Jennys cover, also lovely. This is a chanty (shanty). Sailors would sing this faster and more brusquely. Whoever heard the chanty and somehow heard the beauty within to first produce a slower, mournful arrangement is a musical genius.

Haha, I’ve only ever heard this arrangement, and was thinking how fun it would be to cover it as a sea shanty. 😂

@wailinjennyfan I second the recommendation of the Wailin' Jennys performance of this song. Kate Rusby's version is nice, but the Jennys' version blew me away. Just incredible three-part harmony and feeling.

The origins of this shanty are unclear. It is not found in collections such as Hugill's Shanties from the Seven Seas and its first appearance seems to be on the LP A Sailor's Garland (1952), sung by A.L. Lloyd. Lloyd claimed to have collected it from sailors in Bristol who had sailed in the West lndies rum and sugar trade. and said that the melody had been recorded as a “Tobago reel”; however, there is more than a slight suspicion that the song may have been largely one of Lloyd's own creations! ‘White Stocking Day’ was the day each month when a sailor's female relatives dressed up in their best clothes to collect his half-pay or ‘allotment’. However. not all sailors made provision for the women to collect this allotment, preferring to take a larger advance payment for themselves, and this problem inspired the famous Liverpool feminist social campaigner and MP Eleanor Rathbone to demand o more equitable system of providing for sailors' and soldiers' dependants during the First World War, eventually culminating in her Family Allowances Act of 1945.
