Stephanie wanted to keep Brooke out of the family mostly because, yes she was an opportunist, but she would be a bridge to Beth returning to take Eric away. It wasn't necessarily about Ridge, but it came off that way which is why it was insulting to Stephanie. What she didn't expect later was Brooke to go after Eric (or Eric chasing Brooke after learning about sending Beth and Stephen to Paris)
