The Spectra family is my main reason for rewatching these episodes. I just find all of them so heartwarming. They are such a genuinely likeable group of characters, unlike most others on the show. And I like how nostalgia is always a factor with those characters (because I'm like that myself) - they never forget their past, and they remember their deceased loved ones (I always thought it was so sweet how every now and then Sally would make a point of bringing up Saul, even years after he passed away, and how she always kept a photo of him in her office).

In the words of @donkeygospel6 regarding trying to control the plot using different narrative devices - now we also have Macy giving it a try with her tape recording. Of course, she doesn't have the cunning it takes so her attempt will ultimately fail due to the interference of a more skillful player (Bill) who, incidentally, is a publisher whose _literal job description_ is to control the narrative. This entire scenario also parallels the original "hidden letter" plot with Caroline and Ridge, and is a nice inversion of the _first_ time Bill was responsible for breaking up Thorne and Macy - that time by publishing something Macy did not want Thorne to know (the photo of her at her mother's wedding), and this time by withholding information Macy _did_ want Thorne to know (the tape).

@@donkeygospel6 I have to say that reading your comments have given me an even deeper appreciation of Bill Bell's writing! And I love that I'm not the only one who enjoys the "thesis approach" to soap watching! 😊😂 An interesting point that just occurred to me is _Darla's_ role in all this. Darla is the one who encourages Macy to send the tape to Thorne, but she is also the one who inadvertently enables Bill to intercept it by telling him about it. So she is a catalyst both for the action and the interruption of said action (so, quite ironically, Darla is the one who actually triggers Macy's alcoholism - I did NOT see that coming!). This is quite typical of the special kind of "chaotic agency" that Darla possesses - she is able to control the plot in unpredictable and sometimes contradictory ways, like a double-edged sword. Darla was able to expose Bill's shady publishing early on, allowing Sally to blackmail him - but this gave Spectra a powerful enemy. Darla saved Spectra by getting Bill to invest in it - but this also caused a very frustrating situation with Karen as an unwelcome executive. Darla just stole designs for Spectra - which could save the company but _also_ ruin it if something goes wrong. Darla as a character has flashes of genius and utter cluelessness. Darla can flirt with a man while actually being loyal to his wife. Darla can compete with her own alter ego for a man. There is a very interesting duality to Darla.

@@donkeygospel6 true - it seems like Bill's ties to the Forresters are downplayed now. And speaking of agency, this episode also highlights Macy's almost complete lack of independent agency. She hardly ever takes any decisive action without being prompted by another character (usually Sally, sometimes Darla or Thorne). So when she occasionally does try to control events of her life, she fails and ends up losing even more control.
