The best arc that showing how complicated human's can be. Good people can turned into heartless monster once they lost their precious one, and evil people can turned into normal human once they find their precious one. Everyone have chance to become angel or demon, no matter who you are.

On the contrary the 1999 version, while being constantly darker in tone, portrays Gon in a more heroic/warmer light than the 2011 version and the Manga.

All the other arcs had lead in to the next arcs, so when you get into a new arc, you already have the foundation so you can dive right in (hunter exam introduced phantom troupe, some mysterious power (nen), villain for heavens arena, heavens arena introduced greed island, etc) but with the chimera ant arc, there was no set up so the start, it was literally starting from zero so that’s why the start felt different

The back half of this arc, to me, is equal parts "This is amazing" and "get to the point, narrator".

I've always thought of the Hunter Association as essentially a crowd fund for all the most talented/powerful people (nen users) in the world, basically its own society that ensures everyone who's a part of it is exempt from societal norms and laws (for better or worse). It's not inherently good or evil, and while they may lean towards preserving life when possible (such as the Hunters going to NGL to stop the ants from destroying the world) it's still more of a means to an end than an act of goodwill. You can see this in the way the association is sabotaging Netero's mission with corrupt hunters letting chimera ant captains get away to make Netero look bad. You can even see this in Netero himself, who's clearly not the "wise old man who's a pillar of what people should strive to be like". He himself is very much like Gon, which (!!SOFT SPOILERS!!) becomes very obvious when the showdown begins.

Loved this discussion. My first watch of this arc was a mix of your reactions. Half of my brain was like...wtf is this, I hate bugs, when will it end? The other half was so curious I couldn't blink. The owl/bat fight is absolutely skippable to me. And honestly at this point in the show, I unconsciously stopped rooting for Gon as much. I was more interested in Welfin than Gon lol. Enter Komugu, and it's the best thing I've ever watched. Not the best anime. Just the best thing. Hyouriittai 🥲
