One opinion, The story, scenes are so beautiful in the movie actually nude scenes are not at all needed. RK used the nude scenes as insurance to bank on movie goers. Same tactics used in Bobby (Dimple's costume). When story in the movie is so good, it alone pull off the whole movie. I heard RK's some movie flopped in 60's and that brought financial troubles to his life. Just to avoid another failure, RK made the movie his way.... and became known as "Show Man". But Ram Teri Ganga Maily aabsolutely beautiful movie and did not need any dependency. My thoughts !!

Sex and sexuality are an important part of life and art imitates life. So no matter how the public perceived it, pahadiyo me nachti hui mandakini to my mind was an artistic choice- because that is how love happens in the wild (and about everywhere).

Well, a well covered body for dancing Mandakini also could have worked. But director wanted to go nude way... then in the train breast feeding scene... These could have been avoided. But movie maker knows that such scenes would go viral among a section of people in the society. A strong word of mouth about those scenes, curiosity and appeal will bring audience to theatre. So deliberately those shots were filmed. Often a new comer is a cast for such role because established heroine may not agree to do such scenes. Similar way, Dimple Kapadia was used in Bobby....!!!

@@rambalram2610 The fact that Mandakini's scenes helped sell the movie only strengthens the very point of Raam Teri Ganga Maili- people are willing to sit through a painful movie about a woman being turned into a plaything by the men around her because they themselves see Mandakini as a sexual object. Raj Kapoor has portrayed sexuality and breastfeeding in it's natural state and there is nothing "bold" or impure about it. But people either view it with lust or they saintly criticize it as "unnecessary" (like you did) when it is in fact very necessary to the story and the art.

Raj Kapoor was no saint...!! He knew how to exploit Indian audience and get through the censor board red tape...!!! Mainly illiterate, sexually deprived Indian audience or I would say people in the Indian sub-continent would flock to theatre. Raj Kapoor knew that well..! He was in the show business, knew very well what would work. You are saying as if Raj Kapoor was making a paint with very very artistic mind... It was business after all. He had commercial failure earlier on a few other projects. So, was apt in his next one. I am not looking at sexual part of the movie. But going through Ra j Kapoor's Mind... what he did and why he did. From the movie point of view, the movie itself very beautiful, story is ver good, songs are amazing.... so, sex was not necessary. That's my thought.

@@rambalram2610 What you're forgetting is that Raj Kapoor (and other people in the industry) had before this made plenty of movies with bold scenes, maybe only to sell. But in doing so, he also took the trajectory of Indian cinema, arguably our most important form of art into his own hands- he confidently showed the female body the way it always has in ancient Indian culture (sculptures and idols in temples). If it was a movie made to sell bold scenes, the nudity would have been tasteless and exploitative. Ganga's nudity in the movie is neither celebrated nor shamed- it's just there. So i hope you get my point- Raj Kapoor made more choices about the movie than just got much nudity it's going to have- he was making a movie, a story. If people are perverts and buying tickets in huge numbers, that's just a bonus- paise mil rahe to le lo wala logic.
