My favorite aspect of producing using an MPC is it gets me to use my ears more. Rather than visually looking at the notes against the grid like I tend to do in a DAW, I listen for issues and then dig in if necessary. I just think that’s a much better practice because at the end of the day, it’s about whether it sounds good or not.

It really, really, really is a workflow thing, but I agree, that's definitely one of the benefits. When you work ITB "I'll fix it later" also becomes a real thing. You're right though, when you have a visual waveform, you're more likely to just "align" it to the "perfect" place, rather than what sounds better. I use a 4K so it's always easier to just use your damn ears when chopping samples. And there's the fact that, you know when you press "record", it's going to be a pain in the ass to rerecord it, so you have much more incentive trying to get it right the first time. ITB it's too easy to just put jank all over the place and mark as "revisit later", while if you're working OTB you don't have unlimited everything - and if a part is not perfect you usually delete it and start again. That being said, these days my workflow is very hybrid. I start with the 4K and samples chops and drums, and sequence on the MPC and play around with my various modules/analog synths, and if I actually get something I like I press "record", and then finish it off ITB. Some things really are far easier ITB, depending on what you're editing/trying to write. To be fair, sample(s) drums bass and maybe one sound or instrument is what makes the 80% of a hiphop beat, and are usually easily doable on just an MPC. Once you have a solid idea, it's easier to work in the box (with either VSTs or analog instruments) to add all the extra "ear candy" and automation. If the idea is not solid, you don't have an extra dead project on your PC lol.

SAVE THIS VIDEO!!!….Bolo just gave us a Major Gem 💎. WHY you may ask? Good question lol because the reason this video is so dope is simply because a Dawless setup is for producers not necessarily engineers. One thing about today’s music is too many people sound the same the reason is they’re all using daws system from laptop, iPad tablets, etc., and all those sounds are similar or the same. Old school producers wasnt to much concerned about Levels, mix downs and so forth…. Just good old loops drums keyboards and what not . I personally love using a controller MPC controller with midi sound modules and keyboard midi sound. As for mixing that’s for someone else to mix(That’s the good thing about Daws frfr)mix as you go concept, in my opinion it slows down your production and creative Ideas. Dawless set is for creativity The uniqueness will separate you to where you will have your own sound almost like a real musician in a band …you are just the orchestra . Great tip Bolo …

My hardware setup is a Squarp Hapax and MPC One+ for sequencing and samples (I also use some synth sounds on the MPC, mainly the Mellotron and Solina). The hardware instruments I use are Moog Minitaur, Perkons HD-01 drum machine, Waldorf Streichfett string synth, Finegear Dust Collector effects unit, Roland TM6-Pro drum module with an acoustic to analog converted Tama drum kit, loads of guitar effect pedals, two Roland RE202 Space Echos for vocal effects, Squier Bass VI, Orange OB1-300 amp, 87 Gibson Les Paul Jr as my main guitar, 60s Ampeg Gemini II guitar amp. I sequence, and loop bass parts, guitar parts, write vocals live until I have the song arrangement set in stone. Everything is running into a Midas stage box connected to an X32 mixer and then to my PA for a live show listening experience while writing (sounds awesome, Moog shakes the walls!). Once I'm ready to record I send all the sequenced tracks into Logic from the X32. Stuff is fairly close to mixed by the time it hits the DAW. I do the final vocals and guitar / bass tracks there, fine tune some EQ and compression, maybe add a little more reverb on some things. I do have a Softube Console 1 I plan to try out for mixing once I'm ready to do the final mixes on the stuff I'm working on now! Super fun working with hardware, much faster, more creative, sounds amazing, and all around a much better process for me personally! It's expensive but I'm an older guy like you so have the funds for stuff like this now. Also much better investment because at least you can get some of the money back later if you decide to sell the gear unlike most software.

Thanks for a great video. I must say, it blows my mind when some youtubers de-emphasise sound quality when talking up analog gear. They focus instead on work flow and playability. I agree these last two are important, but, good lord, sound quality is, to me, the MOST important part of the equation. If one listens to the classics from the 80s and 90s you can hear straight away how much more alive the individual sounds are. You can get away with using fewer samples and layers because each sound is "alive". Sounds coming out the DAW don't have the same "liveness" to them, even if they match the tonality of a sound coming out of a hardware unit.

I started DAWless in the beginning. I had a Yamaha SY77, a Boss Dr Rhythm drum machine, a cheap Roland to do my sampling, a Beringer mixer that went into a Roland 8 track recorder. My SY77 had a 16 track sequencer in it, so that gave me a lot of room to do whatever I wanted. I had two of the Roland recorders. One for the beat and one for the vocals. You're right!!! When I had that setup, I was more creative. I HAD TO BE. I learned so many ways to bounce things down to make it sound bigger. And this was all before I learned the engineering side of it. I miss my old setup.....🥺

Been producing music for many years, been a studio engineer also for many years and have released at least 5 of my own CD's. The best way to make your music sound like a complete band playing is by composing your music and many of your tracks on a keyboard. Then transferring your tracks to a DAW.

I know people admire the whole analog sound etc. But I can accomplish the same with a Daw etc. MPC is cool in my book. People made great beats in Fl studio from boom bap to EDM to trap. I'm not too hype about a MPC and I got one. But to each its own it's all preference at the end of the day. All I need is Fl studio and and Mpd 218 controller and I'm good. Historically the music business had a high cost to get a good sound as it’s main barrier to entry. Once the price to get good audio came down, they had to come up with a new feature to raise the cost of entry into the business. The next feature was high cost of good quality video. The issue here is that the smaller businesses have always been playing catch up. It’s like the small companies are playing checkers and chess while the major companies are playing Go.

MPC needs to support a sample rate of 48khz as a minimum it will allow users of external interfaces to make use of higher sample rates in standalone mode. That will help boost the audio quality. I’m not sure why they chose the unit to operate at 44.1khz. The difference to some may be negligible but when capturing audio it really helps to insure the high end and special details are as organic as possible.

I like that MPC One with the Roland D6 you had in another video, once space is on my side they’re both getting purchased. I love Logic, Reason and FL, but the time has come to make things right! 👊🏾😉

I love a good MPC set up....for beginners the MPC One+ is a great choice, plus the Novation Midi controller makes a great combo.

Appreciate you Bolo 🙏 started making music in pro tools with virtual instruments and mixing with gaming headphones lol. Saw Hit Boy with the mpc live 2 in a video so got one of those. Sounds so much better. Acquired a pair of studio monitors as well. Been watching your videos and cookups. Still learning, still use the daw for final edits at the moment.

I got the mpc key 37 but wouldn't the beat sound the same even if you record the audio from the MPC into ableton or logic or whatever daw that you use? I like using the MPC in controller mode , I think i get the best of both worlds.

Bought a MPC live 2 and aRoland 404 MK2 for Christmas to try the dawless workflow out.... SENT IT BACK ! It's not for me at this time. I like the immediacy of FL Studio and I'm use to the more visual nature of ITB production. I may go back to it at some point in the future if I really have time to get past the learning curve but for now I'm going Fl Studio and setting up Beatmaker 3 and Koala on My Ipad pro for portability. Good vid Bolo!

“Better” is subjective. A hot song is a hot song regardless of how it was made. The final product is all that matters. You can spend 16 hours recording vocals over and over and no one cares if the final product they hear is hot. With that said, I preferred the sound my old mpc3000, hardware synths, through the 4k I had at the time. But the process takes way too long to record and re-record and overdub. I can get same/better sound on the backend with my hardware inserts while keeping the speed of ITB.

I still have my VPC-1 and Texhnics KN7000 for regular use. It's straight forward, after turn on the ON button. No need update, subscription, and etc. I have my Ableton on my MAC. But real Keyboard still King 👑.

Running a very similar rig to you. Mpc key 61, mpc live 2, roland fa-06, arturia astrolab. Sadly though the astrolab is not compatible with the mpc. You get that weird loop and the astrolab do not have a Local Off-switch to fix it in the wat the fa-06 does. But the sounds are sooo good i still keep it to either sample from or straight up audio rec. Hopefully Arturia will fix this but when?! And about the topic I can just say nothing comes close to the raw powerful sound of a mpc. 808s and kicks hit like a train. Everything is at your fingertips at all time. Nothing comes between you and your music. Intimate like. 😂❤
@UrbanJournal12 күн бұрын
Really? I was wondering why I hadn’t been seeing people using an astrolab with the MPC. That may be the reason.
@emilbergdahl306312 күн бұрын
@UrbanJournal yes unfortunately. That weird playback loop ends up fully freezing the mpc too so you have to hard reset it. Not very good for your mpc...

@foreignyard172012 күн бұрын
But will it make difference on how the music sounds if you are in controller or standalone mode? Is it not just the Keyboards that carry that sound and not the MPC?
@BoloDaProducer12 күн бұрын
Yes but very slight
@russellkott834813 күн бұрын
Curious, Bolo, when you finishing your beat on the mpc what DAW do you export your files to? How much additional mixing/mastering are you doing outside of the MPC for the final track?
@BoloDaProducer12 күн бұрын
I don’t do any mastering. If it’s loud enough and sounds good I’ll leave it just like that. Sometimes it peaks well over 0db and if it still sounds good I keep it just like that. If I want to saving it inside the computer I’ll run it through my pres and it’ll give me a different type of color to the track.

Also for those making beats completely in a DAW, consider just getting an outboard piece of gear to run through it and then back to the computer. That way you can keep your same setup.

Even tho a M4 MacBook or 4090 gaming pc + MPC studio 2 is the most powerful MPC on earth, nothing beats hardware and it’s yours. No license issues, no getting your account hacked. No updates slowing down your OS. Just power it up and create.
