So the solution is search for a product, add to the wishlist and wait for some time. Not only you will get better suggestions, but also you are likely to get better product with this delay.

Any bike lock can be broken open. The tool currently being used is not a pair of snips but a battery operated grinder. So, I use 3 locks + a disk brake alarm lock, in hope that if my bike is harder to steel the thieves will try on a bike that has less protection than the one I use.
@xaiano7945 жыл бұрын
agreed, but it's about the amount of time and effort it takes the thief - if you're talking about being able to use a common, cheap, quiet tool to remove a lock in mere seconds, then it isn't much of a deterrent.
@Noadvantage2463 жыл бұрын
I like the thick kryptonite chain locks for mutiple reasons; 1. MUCH too thick and hard to cut with bolt cutters 2. Protective sleeves around the chain tend to gunk up angle grinder at best disabling the disc and at worse definitely reducing effectiveness and slowly them down. 3. Unlike a U bolt the chain is fluid and moves making it hard to grind away at it on a consistent angle. 4. Also unlike a U bolt you'd need at least two complete cuts on the same link to compromise the lock.

I use cable locks only as a back up to a good U lock. The cable goes through one pedal, frame and wheels. U lock through rear triangle and back wheel. 12" inch dollar store cable lock for seat rails to frame which I leave on at all times.(better then nothing for seat and post)
@JaeDubbya20113 жыл бұрын
They serve a purpose though and the security level is usually listed on the lock. I have several different locks, I use a cable lock for my helmet saddle and front wheel. The frame and rear wheel I lock with a much stronger D lock. If I am going for a long ride and not planning on leaving my bike anywhere, I will just take the cable lock in case I need to stop to grab a bottle of water or something from a shop and I am only leaving the bike for a minute.
@karljuan89083 жыл бұрын
Is the U lock better?
@JaeDubbya20113 жыл бұрын
@@karljuan8908 depends on the U lock. There are always better locks on the market, but better locks are usually heavier locks, so it's a trade off. I don't leave my bike locked up for more than 15-30 minutes, so I accept the risk that my lock could be cut with bolt cutters. If I was going to be leaving my bike all day I'd want two locks, one that could not be cut with bolt cutters. Still anyone could turn up with a van and a battery powered angle grinder and cut off the best of locks, which is why it is best to lock your bike in a place that would discourage someone from doing that like with lots of people walking past or with CCTV.
@mlo71598 Жыл бұрын
I see these cable locks EVERYWHERE. Don't know why more people aren't talking about this.
@fredlast4547 Жыл бұрын
Keeping your bike depends on a large extent to how you assess where it is parked. What kind of area is it? How long will you park there? What time of day will you park there? A cable lock can suffice in many circumstances, especially when carrying a heavy D lock is prohibitive. The value of your bike is also a determinant. I haven't lost a bike to theft but have lost two D locks. One was cut off by workers while left in place and the other was seized up when left in place, probably with super glue so I couldn't remove it. If you commute, let's say to university, then your bag may well be full of other stuff, so a heavy D lock uses up a lot of space and adds a lot of extra weight to your bag. If parking provided by your establishment is secure and covered by CCTV, then a couple of cable locks could suffice.

Well a battery powered grinder eliminates any sense of security with any bicycle lock that's why those expensive 16 inch wheel folding bikes are appealing as well as a cheap electric bike
@kennkiser5 жыл бұрын
I've watched a couple videos showing the bar locks being defeated fairly quick, too. I can't remember if they attacked the locking mechanism or used a small battery powered tool with a cutting wheel. Bottom line... If a thief wants your bike and comes prepared (with bolt cutters, cutting wheel, lock pick, or whatever), your bike is as good as gone. Of the many videos I've watched that covered more than 2 dozen locks, including some costing more than $100, all were defeated and most within 60. In one video they even pretended to steal their own bikes in busy public places and not a single passerby said a word to them. Don't get me wrong, I still suggest locking up your bike, but I also recommend insuring your bike (depending on it's value, difficult level of replacing, or sentimental value).
