Bolton Castle North Yorkshire - Walking Tour and short flight with DJI mini 3 Pro 2023

Bolton Castle history.
Bolton Castle is a medieval fortress located in the Yorkshire Dales, England. It was constructed between 1378 and 1399 by Richard, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton. The castle was built as an impressive defensive stronghold as well as a luxurious residence signifying the Scropes influence and wealth and reflecting upon their status and power. The castle is an excellent example of medieval military architecture, featuring a rectangular courtyard surrounded by four corner towers and a curtain wall.
In 1536 John, 8th Baron Scrope supported the Pilgrimage of Grace rebellion against the religious reforms of King Henry VIII and gave the noteable Abbot, Adam Sedbar, sanctuary in the castle. In consequence John Scrope had to flee to Skipton pursued by the King's men but Abbot Sedbar was caught and executed. In retribution the king ordered Bolton castle to be torched, causing extensive damage. Within a few years, some of the damage had been repaired and Sir John had regained his seat in Parliament.
Mary, Queen of Scots was held prisoner at Bolton for six months. After her defeat in Scotland at the Battle of Langside in 1568 she fled to England, posing a threat to the position of the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I. Although Mary was initially held at Carlisle Castle she was moved to Bolton in July of the same year and was given her own apartments in the South-West tower. Of her retinue of 51 knights, servants and ladies-in-waiting only 30 of her men and six ladies-in-waiting were able to stay in the castle, the rest taking lodgings nearby. The Castle at this time was initially considered an unsuitable lodging for a Queen, so tapestries, rugs and furniture were borrowed from local houses as well as nearby Barnard Castle. In January 1569, Mary was removed from Bolton Castle for the last time and was taken to Tutbury in Staffordshire where she would spend much of her 18 years in confinement before her execution in 1587.
After the death in 1630 of Emanuel Scrope, 1st Earl of Sunderland, without any legitimate children, Bolton Castle was inherited by Mary the eldest of his three illegitimate daughters. Mary married Charles Paulet, 6th marquess Winchester and 1st Duke of Bolton.
During the English Civil War (1642-1651), Bolton Castle was occupied by Parliamentary forces. The castle was damaged during the war and “slighted” afterwards, but much of it survived. It has never been sold and is still in the ownership of the descendants of the Scrope family, with it’s current owner, Thomas Peter Algar Orde-Powlett, 9th Baron Bolton, inheriting it after his father's death in June 2023.
Bolton Castle is adorned with the heraldic badges of the Scrope family, including a castle and a pair of swans, which can be seen in various parts of the castle. In the 20th century, efforts were made to preserve and restore Bolton Castle and it is now a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The castle has been used as a filming location for several movies and TV shows, adding to its cultural significance.
Bolton Castle stands as a testament to medieval architecture and has a rich history intertwined with both political and royal events. Today, it offers a glimpse into the past for visitors interested in exploring England's medieval heritage.
MAKING THE FILM
I am a UK CAA & EU EASA registered UAV pilot with valid Op & Flyer ID's and my drone is a DJI mini 3 Pro, which weighs less than 250g, therefore I can fly within VLOS up to an altitude of 120m (400ft) AGL in the Open A1Category. I am allowed to fly over uninvolved people but am not allowed to fly over a congregation/crowd that cannot dispurse in the unlikely event that the drone falls out-of-control! The flight was not inside a FRZ.

Thank you for your kind comments.💓 I"ve been given to understand that dogs aren't allowed in the Castle and due to the falconry experience they do not allow dogs in the gardens either as they can frighten the birds. Sorry. 🥺

Thx Buzz matey. I did a short flight about 500m away from the castle in light rain and the dark as wasn't sure if they had put the Birds of Pray back in their avery. The ground shots I use an Osmo 6 with my phone. Some of the shots were in the rain but we were lucky to see the Falconry Experience in the dry. Not allowed to video but could take photos. 👍

@@buzzindrones It's privately run Buzz and they have a no drone policy but I wasn't too bothered about that; it was a safety thing about not filming with the peregrine flying mm away from your shoulder at 100+ mph. 😶‍🌫️ .They were obviously OK about filming everywhere else though.
