This chemistry video tutorial highlights the difference between the bomb calorimeter and the coffee cup calorimeter. The bomb calorimeter works at constant volume and the coffee cup calorimeter works at constant pressure. The coffee cup calorimeter is useful for measuring the enthalpy changes that occur in an aqueous reaction since enthalpy is equivalent to the amount of heat energy transferred at constant pressure. The bomb calorimeter is useful for measuring the energy of combustion of a substance. It's not used to measure the enthalpy change however.

Professor Organic Chemistry Tutor, thank you for a short and detail analysis of a Bomb Calorimeter versus Coffee Cup Calorimeter which includes Constant Pressure and Constant Volume in AP/General General. The example in this video is an excellent way to break down Coffee Cup and Bomb Calorimeter problems in Modern Chemistry. This is an error free video/lecture on KZbin TV with the Organic Chemistry Tutor.

My professor just kinda blitzed though how you get to "if its a combustion reaction, it will be giving off heat, meaning it's exothermic, so that means that the heat energy of the surroundings will be positive. If the surroundings of the reaction are positive, then that means the reaction is exothermic, giving off energy, so that means a + Qc = -rxn." My professor just went though the short version of it with the equations

I m wondering what means by constant pressure and constant volume,I just said to myself the volume/pressure remain constants in the system,but I don't understand why the system are said to be constant pressure/volume?

I highly doubt that someone will se this by later today but I have a question -- how do you know to make qc negative? Like do you just ask yourself if it's endothermic or exothermic- endo being negative and exo being positive? Also if you know the answer to this then can you also give me the 'common sense/logical' explanation as to why this is?
@timeless9820
@timeless9820 Жыл бұрын
do you know what endo and exo means? byt your explanation you just memorize the symbols he gives. he explains it many times over. Maybe you jumped to this chapter without going over the "lecture and examples" he provides. Endothermic means it absorbs the energy /heat, exothermic means it releases the energy/heat. another way endo = indoors. what keeps all the heat without the object you are looking at /system. what exo=outdoors. what let all the heat out of the room/system. as he mentioned in his previous videos. for chemistry the POV is from the system, for physics the POV is from the surroudings.

Hi, I am a bit confused on how the coffee cup calorimeter is not constant volume if the coffee cup maintains same volume. Can someone explain?
@hulitonuras4177
@hulitonuras4177 2 жыл бұрын
Constant volume refers to the gas above the liquid not the volume of the container. Your average coffee cup is not air tight in the same way a calorimeter is therefore its exposed to the atmosphere at 1atm or constant pressure. The air tight calorimeter is the opposite situation. It is air tight so no issue with the volume of air changing but pressure will not be constant during the reaction. Hence the delta n x R x T adjustment that needs to be made.
@chesscube8671
@chesscube8671 2 жыл бұрын
Why did you ignore the energy absorbed by water in the bomb calorimeter problem?
@hulitonuras4177
@hulitonuras4177 2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't ignored. The energy that was absorbed by the water is reflected in the change in temperature. When you multiply this by the heat capacity you get q for the calorimeter which is -q for the reaction. Energy absorbed is reflected in this value.
