We practiced those drills about once a month while I was in elementary school in the 1950s. The bombs made since then are hundreds of times stronger than those used in Hiroshima and with way more radioactivity. The kill range is a lot larger, and in all likelihood, if you see the blast you will die shortly thereafter. It was that knowledge and the knowledge that anyone who used them would be attacked in return, with both or all nations being severely damaged that kept them from being used since the end of WWII - a real extinction event. Even if you survive the initial attack, chances are you will die from leukemia within a matter of years. Read up on the families that lived down wind from the testing areas where our nation used to perform tests on active duty soldiers - many of the troops died of cancer as well as children and adults miles away from the actual testing areas. Those areas are still contaminated more than 60 years later.

That includes the fire extinguisher, and anything you can pick up and use as a weapon, even pencils

When I was in first grade back in 1991, I remember doing a drill one time that was different from the typical fire drill we did in school all the time. But I remember this one like it was only yesterday. They made us go out in the corridors away from the windows and essentially duck and cover. I never understood what the drill was about and even thought maybe it was a tornado drill until actually recently where I realized it was a fallout drill like this one.
@juanzingarello40054 жыл бұрын
@@callumtanner992 Maybe it was carried over from the end of the Cold War. I can tell you this. I was at that school for 5 years and that first year was the only time we ever did that drill in that school. So it must have been related to it.

My grandparents remember doing these because, well, they were alive when these nuclear bomb drills were alive. However, they would get into the hallways, with the kindergartners and first graders kneeling and facing the walls, and then the second and third graders would lie on the walls behind the kindergartners and first graders, and then they’d lean forward, place their arms above their heads above the kindergartners and first graders, lean forward, tuck their heads under their hands, and then shield.

That's why I patented and am manufacturing the turtle shell from plywood. You can wear it clothing optional, take it everywhere. In the event of a nuclear strike do as a turtle does. It can be you'res for ten easy payments of $19.95. You may ask is my life worth $200. But remember you no longer need clothes. Live in a cold climate we can add removable insulation at and additional payment of $19.95. That's cheaper then a jacket. And for those longing for that vintage cold war look we can make it from actual old plywood desks. Maybe there's even some artwork or pre chewed gum there for you? Remember in the nuclear war you're local quickie mart may be all cleared out of gum, and you're dentist may be dead. Just because you survived Armageddon doesnt mean you'll survive a cavity in the wasteland. Plus those ladies/ gents like someone with all their teeth. This vintage Gucci model can be you'res for 60 monthly payments of $19.95. Are you concerned if you qualify for financing? Just remember good credit, bad credit, no credit, Timmy Turtle finances everyone. If you still can't afford $200 ask about our $75 DIY kit.

The fact of the matter is, if the only forewarning you have to a nuclear bomb is the sudden flash of light, then there's nothing better you can do than "duck and cover". If you're too close you were probably still fucked, but there's no reason to tell kids that. You're still a hell of a lot safer from falling debris under a desk, there's going to be a lot less of the first flashes of radiation your body absorbs if you've got a smaller profile and more material between you and the explosion; it's kinda like saying "a nuke just went off, do you want to choose between 0% protection and 10% protection from it". There will be people in the periphery who this would save. But if you say "it's all about comforting the kids", that's ridiculous: the comfortable thing to do would be to pretend nukes didn't exist.

honestly though at first i thought this was BS too.. but in reality.. its not.. there is a certain range outwards where ducking at cover WILL help.. obviously if your anywhere near where it drops you are going to get vaporized.. be no matter how strong the bomb is there will always be an area at the very outer edge ( wherever that edge might be depends on how bomb yield) , but nonetheless there IS an area that takes "minimal" damage from the bomb.. whether that be 30 miles away or 200 miles away.. there is small range where this will be useful. in the area between no effect of the initial blast and "full vaporization" and if you're in that range... you WILL see the flash before it hits you. and you WILL have time to "duck and cover". this video is geared toward the people that CAN possibly survive because they are far enough out. they just don't bother telling the kids.. "if your too close you're dead anyways". they focus on if you happen to be in an area where people CAN survive if they react properly.
