Diamond Baby I love how you not only showed a childish mindset with your hostility, but stupidity as well. Let me educate you on why It was called Boriken, it’s because it was named by the indigenous taínos which in English means “Land of the valiant lord”. The name came from the Taino-Arawak people, The terms “Boricua” and “Borinqueño” derive from the words “Boriken” and “Borinquen”respectively. And are commonly used to identify someone who is or has Puerto Rican descent. There are still Puerto Rican’s today who call our lovely land “Boriken” today, please educate yourself next time your hostility decides to overpower your ego.

+Imani Warren I'm just glad that my island treasures this and as a community we celebrate it. This stuff has to survive so long as we have our feet grounded on planet Earth. This is our legacy, we must keep our kids seeing these celebrations, and always see the beauty and strength in this. Our ancestors didn't have power in their situation, but they were never powerless. I'm sure the ISLANDS and the beauty of their surroundings also gave then strength, wild flowers, a little frog found no where else in the world, food, dance, foundational support as a community. They endured with pride and grace and weren't uninformed about who they are.

I was three weeks old when my parents moved to Puerto Rico. Learned to swim as an infant in a tide pool at Crash Boat Beach before I could walk. I actually remember, at 3 years old, the beautiful flowers on the trees and the many people who stopped walking to pinch my chubby pink cheeks. Que lindo, they said. I'm 66 years old now and I still long to splash in the ocean tide pools of Puerto Rico's Crash Boat Beach! It is like a sense or body memory. Wonder what its like now. Unfortunately, I now live in dry, hot, relentless cactus Arizona. Hate it, but love mi familia!

One thing that people on both sides need to understand is that our histories are different. Blacks in the US were largely a minority, oppressed even after slavery. Blacks in the US had to create a very strong black identity because it was a form of survival. While that isn't to say there are no issues of racism in the caribbean and south america, black culture was widely accepted as a general part of Puerto Rican, Dominican, Cuban, and Brazilian culture, so the need to a strong sense of 'blackness' was not as prevelant. This is why US blacks have a hard time understanding latin american blacks because latin american blacks are more than aware of their african roots, however they don't have a need to cling so strongly to a black identity that US blacks do.

Very well said. Puerto Rican’s aren’t so divisive on skin color as Americans are. We all accept these as part of our culture no matter what the skin color. That’s why the term cultural appropriation angers me so much!!! It only exists in the US by people who are angry
