Surprisingly good. I've not heard much about the PC Engine but it seems the wavetable synthesis does lead to some good chiptunes. I've heard the console's music compared to the sega genesis and I do understand it.

A real shame the TG16 didn’t sell particularly well in the US as opposed to the success its Japanese counterpart was. Most music composed for the TG16/PC Engine was so pleasant compared to most 3rd-party publishers’ buzz/twang-filled Sega Genesis titles, and muffled sample-based functionality the SNES relied solely on. Really, the TG16 was the only genuine taste of peak chiptune music we’d get here in the US while Japan already had a series of MSX machines whose FM upgrades the PC Engine would later sound nearly identical to.
