💡Bombing is an opportunity to figure out how to turn comedy shows around, but the answer is not in your material. The answer is in your relationship with the audience. Do something different and experiment, sometimes you'll figure it out. That gives you confidence.

Hey, Aspiring Comedians. I'm building a stand-up comedy memberships site and need your help. If you know what you want or need to learn to get better at stand-up comedy, please explain it in a comment. Then I can make a video or design a lesson that will fulfill your needs. Break a Funny Bone! GD

As someone who has played, literally, 3000 open mikes I think this is the best video I've ever seen on the subject. Wish I had it when I first started. Thanks.

This felt like a sneak peek into a real class, the question and answer videos are usually somewhat rehearsed. Very intense I like it!!

I actually thought the same at some point.I thought they may have been rehearsed.I think people think that because he repeats the question back to the audience and the quick response seems like it's "at the ready." But heck, he's been doing it so long, that other than the dealing with the changes that modern advancements bring to comedy; you're still dealing with the core fundamentals of comedy. There's probably no question he hasn't heard or considered about stand up comedy. I took a class called Intro to Ministry that dealt with how to talk with people when you visit them at the hospital, at home, or when they come to you with a burden. They taught us about active listening. That's what made me think, that repeating his questions back was a form of demonstrating actively listening; plus it helps ensure they can hear whether or not he understood the question. It gives a chance for them to clarify too. Cuz, "what's the most important part of teaching a class?"..."you relationship with the students". How did I manage to make that sound illegal? hahaha

Thanks Greg! Great video on this subject. From what I understand, putting your material aside with an audience not listening, and taking control by ranting is a good solution. What about the open mics where the room, full of comics, is listening and attentive, but is just not responding? Do you suggest the same solution, or is that the sign that the material needs work?

Interesting question. The most important thing about performing stand-up comedy is your relationship with the audience. You must learn to read them. If it's a bunch of hostile, then don’t do your show as they are not laughing out of jealousy and spite. If they laugh for others and you don't get laughs, then look at your material. If you don't know, then ask them. I a big believer that when you're confused, ask the audience what's going on...if you can handle the truth. If they're not engaging with anyone, don't do material, rant or riff. To read the audience you must be present and not in your head worrying about remembering your material. I know this isn't the same, but you made me think of something I've been pondering on for a while. Early in the year, I tried "stand up" at an open mic; twice. Which is nothing because I haven't kept at it, probably out of fear. I know that I have the potential to be super funny. Because of how my mind works, deep down inside I know that if I put in the work, I can be a force to be reckoned with...lol. But grand plans and talent mean nothing if I don't put in the work. Anyways, I joined a comedy scene Facebook group some time back and noticed a "similar" dynamic. I do enjoy the page and I don't have any hard feelings with anyone there lol.Everyone "is soooo funny"; that no one "acknowledges" comments in the way that you would on a regular page. If they do it's a very basic response. You never see people talking about, "yo, that was so funny or hilarious". Rather than get any type of "validation or positive feedback", they may jump on the post and say something to "one up the joke" or "tag" your comment; without giving you props or "likes" even. Everyone thinks so highly of their skill, that they won't admit they find you funny and heck, why would they "enable" you? I've always wondered if this is a phenomenon in stand up comedy. Essentially, I'd think that unless you have the most likeable personality to where people can't help but to love you; people are gonna hate and hope you don't feel inspired to continue. It's ridiculous because encouraging you and validating when you truly are funny...actually builds you up and let's you know you're on track; it makes you better. In the process, if I acknowledge your talent by giving you feedback, it pushes me to be better to. Comics that hold back from laughing or giving positive feedback; maybe do so out of a place of jealousy and selfishness. They think very highly of themselves which is good, unless that is fueled by thinking very lowly of others. Not laughing at your jokes (if they truly are funny) is their way of lying to themselves and keeping alive this lie about how "extraordinary" they are; in a world (according to them) of "very ordinary" comedians. My one-liner to a hater's expression: "Hey you might wanna zip that up; you're insecurity is showing". (sorry about the loooooong comment). Don't let their insecurity; mislead you into your own insecurity. By the way, I agree with Greg's ranting solution too. It sounds fun. Where else can you get on a mic and have free reign? I suspect some very funny things could come from that. I hope I never write something so long on KZbin again. Press on man, this is motivating me too.

I swear, I was confused for a moment. Today, I was listening to this video as I walking to my car at work and when I finally sat in the car, I opened up the video at 3:54 and it looked like you had no arms. I swear I was like, “how long have I been gone from youtube that I had no idea this had happened to you lol. Of course I realized I was wrong haha. The other thing is earlier in the video, it was funny when you asked “what’s the most important thing in stand up comedy?” The way she answered was like the “I know” that you get from someone that you’ve told a thousand times. Great video!

True, but it's also effective to be direct sometimes to get a message across. Its possible this student has been told this before and hasn't followed through. Just a thought, sometimes harshness can be more edifying that gentle encouraging. My 2 cents.

She was a guest in the class and interrupted the feedback of another student who was paying. Yet, I thought her question was relevant, so I stopped the class to answer it, even though I was pressed for time at the end of the night. Please know the situation before making assumptions and unkind comments about me. Be well.

Kinda. It you don't care and don't need their response and rant your truth, you'll have fun, maybe write some jokes or flush out some ideas. If there's a change that they'll listen is when you're honest, brutally honest about your subject because they're trying to be honest and they may recognize it. Be well.
