Interesting story. The fact that there are still people in power (governmental or otherwise) who continue to make fruitless attempts at banning music is mindboggling. Once you get a musical inspiration embedded in your soul - (blues rifts from Hendrix and Mark Knopfler in Bombino's case) its not something that can be extracted or taken away from you.

Tuareg people have lived in northern Mali “as early as the fifth century BCE .. establishing the city of Timbuktu in the 11th century .. converting to Islam in the 14th century, gaining wealth, salt, gold, and black slaves.” .. independence swept away, French colonized Mali, defeated Tuareg, made borders & districts to rule the area until Mali declared independence in 1960. Tuareg people have wanted independence and in pursuit of such goals have engaged in many rebellions.
