Күн бұрын

My third trip this year to Tahiti this season for what was the biggest swell of the year.
And it did not disappoint. Wait till you see the Kauli Vaast's Bomb, a god, didn't we love it!
A proper tow bomb!! With Teahupoo set to stage the Olympics, this BIG THURSDAY swell lived to up to all the hype & expectations.
Both in tow and paddle the line up was full of the big names. Enjoy!
Presented by Kelly Surf Tahiti
Extra footage supplied by Pablo Garcia
Artwork by Dan Toomey - Style House Creative
Cindy Drollet from Teahupoo Boat Tours
and Tehina David & Eric for putting me in the spot to get the shots

Yeah I think it's getting a bit over crowded in the channel and for these guys exiting the wave at the speed that their going it must be hard to avoid all these boats. Maybe a cap on the amount of boats that can sit in the channel before their is a serious collision. Another great video Tim, you always seem to be in the right place at the right time mate. 😱🇦🇺

As an intermediate surfer in the UK used to 4 ft beach breaks i have no idea how anyone can survive being wiped out on such monster waves over shallow reef. Looks like certain death. I assume there are a lot of terrible injuries. Give me empty waves, glassy long rides on a balmy summers evening and Im happy. No stress, no fear just fun and satisfaction. But hats off to you guys.

I grew up surfing serious powerfull reefbreaks over shallow coral reef in Reunion Island as when you grow up here, if you're surfing, there is not so many options I can tell you that yes I wonder how people thought Teahupoo was ridable. I know people who have charged Teahupoo. They say the videos don't even give justice to how it is really crazy ! In the 90s, people known to be power surfers and heavy waves specialistes like Tom Carroll, and Mike Stewart (pipeline specialist, legendary bodyboarder) saw the wave work in solid conditions but less serious than what people charge nowadays. They thought the wave was too close to the reef, unridable. That is to tell you how serious it is. I asked some of the people in my island who surfed it why we often see people smile in the tube in such dangerous waves. They said "man you're so happy to have just been able to do the drop and not fail the takeoff that you've done the most risky and dangerous part, you smile." It's not that they don't have fear. Not having fear there is being psychotic, crazy. Fear protects you. The most specialized there all experience fear at Teahupoo. It's the respect that the wave and the place demand. Not fearing it would be the same as not fearing a tiger. You've gotta fear it. In a controlled way, but you've got to. People have died and been injured to the point they became disabled for life here. It's not just fun. It's performance and proving yourself to be able to handle and survive it.

@@bonbondesel Thanks for your reply. I'm a free climber so I understand to an extent how this works, how you can pull off the seemingly impossible. Big waves scare me to be honest because once they take hold of you your life in entirely in the lap of the Gods. I watch surfers in Bali at Ulu Watu as they paddle out with ease. They have a skill I just don't have. I think starting young really helps. Stay safe!

Trying to imagine seeing this film 50 years ago...like a package from the future to show us where we were headed. There would have been no wild hooting in the theater....just stunned silence. Like the Wright Brothers seeing an SR-71. This film is a masterpiece. The surfing...and hard charging was off the charts.

Those waves are just awesome. The slow motion clips are probably best to fully appreciate the overpowering quality of the waves--so thick, forceful and tubular. I can understand how people previously thought these waves would be unrideable because they look unrideable. Now there are too many people out there trying to get into position to experience the most memorable few seconds of your life. I don't even know how these guys can push through such a massive wave when paddling out and close to being drawn into a biggest spin cycle in the world.

The smallest softest wave I've seen caused the worst wipe for the guy in the orange trunks. Funny how life works. All those Wipeout that look like certain death and they just pop right up and smile and go catch another one. This wave was dribbling mush in comparison and homeboy looks like the most dramatic injury I've seen😂😂😂😂 He looks paralyzed for crying out loud.
