What I did say, based on many years as a public high school teacher, is that it can be better and safer for both combatants to be at home for a few days regardless of who started it. The chances of retaliation and instigation by others at school lessens a lot over 3 days when the combatants are not present. My students were the ones that had difficulty getting along with others, teachers included, and most were involved with court. I have 2 kids of my own (boy and girl) who are adults now with their own kids. I always told them they absolutely have the right to defend themselves or someone else being picked on. Yes, they were taught how to fight, taught gun safety and shooting. They were taught that they would never be in trouble at home for defending themselves or others, no matter what the school did. Yes, they each got suspended.

I was suspended for defending myself against a bully, who put his hands on me 3 times before I whacked him and put him in his place. That's completely different than escalating something to a shooting incident. I still don't think you should shoot someone just for hitting you. Good way to stop an attack though.

@@dernvader6876 agreed on all counts. However, what constitutes "fear of loss of life" can vary between people. I could argue this case either way. On one hand, bystanders jumped in and attempted to neutralize attacker so that's 3 on 1 which negates somewhat fear of dying. However, on the other hand, there was no way to tell that the attacker didn't have a concealed weapon ready to pull and those bystanders didn't appear to neutralize much.

I would seriously question the claim that the gun owner shot the attacker. It appears that the attacker grabbed the firearm. There are two camps of firearm ownership: 1. always keep one in the chamber, and 2. only put one in the chamber before entering a known conflict area. The victim may have been from camp 1, and the attacker shot himself.
