I remember when it came out I was a massive fan of bon iver before and I started listening and through the first tune I didn't really have an opinion, I was just interested in how different it was then that bassline kicked in on deathbreast and I was like okay that's huge then it cut out and that fuckified played and I felt it in my soul and that's when it became my favourite album of all time even after listening to only like 5 minutes or whatever lol

Justin Vernon as a musician and a person gives me a sense of calmness and serene longing. Like sitting on the edge of a perfectly calm lake, and reflecting on all the other ways my life could have gone. His music is memory as sound. Often, listening to his music feels like experiencing memories I don't have, dipping a toe into the communal pool of human experience. It's something truly special. I really deeply appreciate this guy.

Thank you Bon Iver (The whole band not just Justin) for not following the path most trod, or even a path trod before, when making this new album. As a fan since for emma, forever ago was released I was intrigued by the Blood Bank EP but completely floored by the Bon Iver Bon Iver album. To be honest I didn't like it much on first listen and didnt know why you would mess with what i considered "perfection". Well a few listens later I realized the soul of For emma was still there, at least in some degree, and you were simply building and massively expanding what the project was. Hundreds of listens later and i not only like it more than for emma, forever ago; I consider it one of the best albums of the last twenty years. Years after making me fall in love with your music the second time I began to hear rumors of new songs coming. I looked forward to once again expanding and redefining my conception of what Bon Iver is. When the first songs came out, i was flabbergasted by them. Not only were they amazing songs, but instead of following the (relatively) easy choice of a "sequel" to bon iver bon iver or following the precedent of your last album and expanding your band's sound in such a way that it impacted ALL contemporary music. You surprised me yet again, you stripped the sound back to For emma, for ever ago and beyond to something more primal yet utterly new. You carefully rebuilt from that foundation without following any of your previously laid sonic blueprints and in the process shocked me yet again. Anyways I dont fret when i dont completely understand or even enjoy the album yet, because I realize that like any true art that it challenges you as much as you may cherish it. As a result I will walk away with not just a greater appreciation for the album at the end, but also your dedication to innovation, and even a greater aapprection to all music. Thank you again and forever -Ned

Went to his concert last week and sat right in front of justin's whole family. What an absolutely amazing and down to earth group of people who have supported this man the whole way. The whole band is absolutely incredible live and I without a doubt broke down into tears multiple times during the concert. If you have any chance to see them/if they come to tour anywhere near you - GO . Thank you bon iver for everything. 8+ years of listening to the music and thinking about all the emotional times this music has led me through, and then hearing it live is absolutely unexplainable and beyond emotional.

I was gonna say the same thing, a lot of the complaints I see on these videos is that it doesn't sound like those songs so they instantly hate them. Justin obviously went through something that changed him, and this is totally his "Age of Adz". It would be boring if skinny love was on repeat, I'm glad he's branching out and as he puts it "wants to destroy things".

I'm always suspicious of that kind of answer though. Cause it might be that simple, but I feel like film directors and writers do this a lot where someone will ask the meaning for something and they just kind of dismiss it with a flippant answer like "Oh I just thought it was cool" and I feel like you can tell a lot when it's a bit disingenuous and they just don't want to give away much meaning. That said, I think in this case Justin did literally work with an artist to come up with a lot of the art and symbols, but near the start he did explain that "22" had a meaning to him, so I'd be surprised if a lot of other stuff didn't too.
@gratuitous205
@gratuitous205 5 жыл бұрын
I think it definitely has meaning for him, but that cringe-worthy theory posed as a question caused him to shut down. It's more like he doesn't want to engage with (and thus, legitimize) that kind of stuff.
