Man I love what you're doing here. Not a big guy with 100k subscribers, and yet here you are giving the best tutorial on one of my favorite songs. Thank you!

this sounds beautiful! can you write out the general picking pattern, kind of hard to follow your hands ... thanks!
@derekkalback19778 жыл бұрын
Alexa M Sorry to be answering so late, but it might be kind of hard to write the whole thing out. The nice thing is you can keep it pretty loose. Really, just try to keep the back and forth between the two D strings with your thumb. That kind of anchors the rhythm. To be honest, I think I do a little more finger picking than he does in the song. If you listen closely he starts to loosely strum after a while. Just experiment with it. The chords are there. Find out what suits you best. Hope that helps and thanks for listening!

I think the recorded version is in open tuning but I think during live performances I think he plays in standard. Great vid thanks man!
@derekkalback19777 жыл бұрын
Parker Mosonyi Yeah, I noticed in live performances he plays it in standard and capoed pretty high. Probably for the sake of a smooth transition between songs. Thanks!

@SiMPLYHaZZaRD7 жыл бұрын
Other guitarists who play Bon Iver will notice the similarities between this and Re: Stacks, in both the tuning and the chords he plays .
@derekkalback19777 жыл бұрын
Will Moody Yep, same tuning. Capoed on the, what, 6th or 7th with Re: Stacks?
@SiMPLYHaZZaRD7 жыл бұрын
Derek Kalback I believe he plays it on the 7th in the studio version. 4th is more my key haha
@reckonre7 жыл бұрын
Perth is played in open D too I believe. not similar in chords but still worth keeping a guitar tuned like this to play Bon Iver!
@MrPeezySleezy7 жыл бұрын
Rick Astley Perth is in a super weird tuning. Not quite open D
@derekkalback19777 жыл бұрын
James Morton Yeah, you're right. Not D. Looks like it's open E7.

Perfect! However the second part of the chorus seems to be slightly different regarding the change of chords: Sure as any living dream F#m7 B It's not all then what it seems A B E And the whole thing's hauled away However i don't really get how to play that part.. Could u help me?
@derekkalback19778 жыл бұрын
Maher Zoubi Yeah, I noticed that part is a little different, but I think you have it. Though, the F# is a major, not a minor. Not sure which one you meant. Good luck!

Did you ever figure this out??
@Jakedoyle88 жыл бұрын
Whats the tuning?
@derekkalback19778 жыл бұрын
Jake Doyle Oh, guess I forgot to mention that. The song is in the key of Open E, but I try to avoid tuning my guitar that high. Too much tension. So I tuned it to open D and put a capo on the 2nd fret.
@Jakedoyle88 жыл бұрын
Derek Kalback thanks, and sorry to be a bother, but was is the tuning for the individual strings, im not too sure what the keys represent, as im beginner-intimidate, for example, E A D G B E
@derekkalback19778 жыл бұрын
Jake Doyle No bother at all, man! For an open D tuning you want to drop your low E to D, keep A, keep D, drop G to F#, drop your B to A, and finally drop your high E to D. So you should end up with DADF#AD. Hope that helps. I'm a music teacher, so this is kinda my thing ;)

A clawhammer tutorial would be nice, can't seem to get it at all
@derekkalback19778 жыл бұрын
Chris Collins You might be able to find some kind of tutorial on KZbin. I kind of explained it in a comment above. As long as you can get the back and forth between the two D strings down with your thumb, you can pretty much figure out what works best for you. There doesn't seem to be a real crystal clear pattern in the song, so I wouldn't worry about getting it 100% correct. But the chords and melody are there. Just fiddle around and see what you can come up with. Hope that helps!

This is a good tutorial but it would be super helpful if you actually played all the parts together...
@derekkalback19776 жыл бұрын
blaze4404 There aren’t too many parts to the song. Just piece them together, puzzle-like.

@@derekkalback1977 you clearly have a Great ear and musical sense. I can relate to the voice thing as it took me a long time to find mine and I’m still finding it. have you tried matching your voice to the melody line you are playing with your fingers? Moving slowly at first. And what about examining the limiting belief that you keep telling yourself that you’re not a good singer? You can totally sing
