Something that will never cease to amaze me about Bon Iver is Justin Vernon’s ability to spin riddles, often grammatically nonsensical lyrics, full of intrigue and mystery, and somehow make it the most relatable story you’ve ever heard.

I get it. This speaks to my soul. I was hell bent and oblivious, now the world terrifies me and all I seek is peace. I've had a leaving plan for years. "Who cares what happens, if it gets REALLY bad I can just 'leave'. That's my peace. But we don't have to have leaving plans. "Some life feels good, don't it?" Yeah, I guess it does. I hope others understand the song in the same way. It would be good to speak to others who connect with this song

I think the song is part of a larger theme of him losing and finding a new, transformed type of faith. I think a lot of 22 a million deals with that theme already, but in this album he is more resolute - there doesn't need to be a faith in God disconnected from this earth, no need for concepts of heaven and hell (although he does admit that this is a beach). Heaven, the next world, God, can all be safety nets protecting us from really feeling what this life is and admitting that we don't know (well its all fine or its all crime anyway). So there is this departure from the faith in the unseen god, which is faith that is just a thought, an assurance, and entrance into faith which is based in actually Experiencing the goodness, actually being able to feel at home in this world with full acceptance of what is (sunlight feels good now, don't it?), actually leaning into this world unconditionally with no leaving plan. It's interesting to see Justin's development from 22 a million to this album. t666 is replete with references to his relation to prayer. On the one hand Justin sings "I'm still standing in the need of prayer" (followed by a circuitry-laden high pitched yell) but also implores "please come off your kneel". He still needs prayer, still needs to turn to the divine, but we can feel that he is conflicted by this type of prayer, that it's a need he would rather do without. On i,i, "faith" countervails this attitude, showing that Justin has transformed from needing that proverbial "fix" of prayer to reassure him (It's not going the road I'd known as a child of God Nor to become stable(So what if I lose? I'm satisfied)) God is not something to hold on to. He no longer needs Religion and faith to buttress his insecurities and provide a safety net. He has come to terms with the fact that, yes, he may lose, but he is satisfied with that as well. But this doesn't mean he is out of faith. Justin writes "I know it's lonely in the dark/And this year's a visitor/And we have to know that faith declines/I'm not all out of mine" In the interim between our loss of one system of faith, and before finding the new, transformed one, we all have to grapple with that darkness, with that dead space in between who we were, and who we are becoming. Recall that each of Bon Iver's albums reflect a different season. The promo video for i,i hailed the album as being the season of fall. On the track "iMi" Justin sings "Livin' in a lonesome way/Had me lookin' other ways/ ('Cause I am, I am, I am lost here, again)/ But on a bright fall morning, I'm with it/I stood a little while within it/ Man, you have to know/Know the way it goes) In the fall it seems as if everything is dying. Justin stands on a bright fall morning with his old faith dead, his compass is outdated, and as we all know, that brings loneliness, confusion, directionless. Whereas perhaps the Justin Vernon of 22 A Million, might have kneeled and prayed and wept and asked for guidance, here he stands a little while within it. Justin is no longer standing "in the need for prayer" but standing within it. He accepts that he cannot pray himself out of his troubles, cannot swim against the tide of the apparent nonsensical absurdity that reality is (there is no design!). And so he just stand a little while within it, without running away. And that is where the magic happens. In that interim of unknowing, of coming to terms with our own emotions, with what we are feeling, instead of what we "believe in" we start to feel that good, good sunlight. Justin implores others to to remember "the way it goes". That this is the cycle of life. In nature and in ourselves. So, we have to know that faith declines, but Justin reassures us that he isn't out of all of his faith. It's just a different one. One not lost in ideologies or belief systems -- what leads to being weightless beasts” but one found in what is called in the Bible the Living God. The God that IS. HERE and NOW. Sunlight feel good now don't it?

The ending of this album, this reigning in of autumn crisp, is Bon Iver's first time out of the shade. After three (four with Blood Bank) albums of first longing, then loneliness, then emotional power, and then existential confusion, "some life feels good now, don't it?" This song isn't scared of the future. Maybe a bit nervous, but not scared. It's ready. Because what's ahead is bright. I love this song so much.

My interpretation of the song is about coming to grips with mortality obviously by the first few lyrics “well it’s all just scared of dying” and later “something’s gotta ease your mind”. And the interesting thing is the imagery reflects Dante’s decent into Hell, with the three headed dogs (Cerberus), angels (Virgil), devils, Ancient Greek pillars (referring to Aristotle in the 1st level of hell) & also at 2:51 the yellow circle thing that sort of resembles Dante’s map of the levels of hell. That’s all I could find and I’m not sure if it’s even intentional.

I don’t what to say. Beautiful. Extracting meaning is fun, but perhaps futile. As many have noted, Fears, mortality, living in the moment. I also feel there’s some message about race and acceptance. But the best thing is that it doesn’t really matter. It makes me feel good. And if that is Justins intention, it worked. Sometimes I just try to look at the Bon Iver work as poetry deep fried in music. Crisp and satisfying!

This song kinda starts like good ole 'head music' reminiscent of the 60s a bit - the lyrics simple, simplistically moving---'fairy tales' 'six of us sitting creek side' - taking me back to my childhood and the little creek behind my house - how we knew every creature that lived on that stretch and I do believe they knew us - they never bothered to hop or crawl or slither away from my brother catching them - giving up the chase and being docile in his hands as he caught them up and carried them closer to me so I could marvel at them and caution, "Don't hurt them Jimmy, they trust us." None of us having a 'leaving plan'. 'Well we're all fine and it's all crime anyway!'
