Birdy’s cover has that sound and vibe that is like you and your ex have been broken up for a long period of time. You’ve both had time to grow and move on from each other. You’re finding forgiveness within yourself and the relationship. But Bon Iver’s original...man, this is what it sounds like immediately after the breakup. You’re angry. You’re sad. You’re accusing. You wanted it to work, but it ended ugly. You want to know what, why, and how. You’re trying to forget them, but the memories won’t leave. The original has this emotion that no cover can ever capture. The original is truly what Justin Vernon was feeling in the time of a breakup. It’s a sound when songwriting that nobody can replicate unless they’re truly feeling it in that exact moment. That’s what makes this version truly beautiful.

it’s always this song, man. give it a few months but then i’ll always come back. there’s something about it. makes me feel nostalgic as hell. makes me remember every other time i’ve listened to it and cried my eyes out. it’s like a hug that you so desperately need. like being cradled in someone’s arms, along with the crushing loneliness of not having anyone to be that person for you. and when the chord progression for the verses comes back around it feels like a reminder that no matter what happens, life will go on and the earth will keep turning. i don’t know. it’s 7am and i’ve been up all night. i’m watching the sunrise through my window. if you’re reading this, i love you.

Hey, Tristan... Suicide is really hard no matter how you slice it... Either those of us who have tried and sometimes regret not having succeeded, sometimes being those who are thankful and grateful for the 2nd chance on life, or those who may have gone through either of the 1st two but most tragically by those still here mourning those lost to suicide. I am so sorry for your loss, and I can't imagine what that feels like, as, I am an only child, but... I miss my Oma dearly, and if it wasn't for my son, I would have already tried seeing her again must sooner than my body seems ready to do so, but... Also before I would have the chance to see her again and say I loved her and missed her and... And... Nothing has been the same since she died... And I don't know if it was accidental or intentional, but apparently last year, after 13 other years of difficulty, it was explained that the 14th year of mourning would be questions asking if she helped nudge the sands of time in her favor, as... She was indeed in a lot of pain... But.... In a random act of love and trying to help a friend be heard by their Aunt Cher, I adopted Aunt Cher into my family, and then learned she is my friend's Oma, just by a different name... And... I poured my heart out... I got to say everything I wished I could say before she died.... And... It happened by accident. By sheer coincidence and happenstance. But it happened... I'm crying as I'm writing this, and I don't even know if you're going to read this or not, but... As someone who has woken up when they didn't intend to, and has been, for the last 15 years been wondering how much more misery I'd have to go through, especially when Oma's been gone for 14 of them... I don't know if I'd see her if I took my own life... But... I know I wouldn't have seen her if I didn't do what I did and love a stranger like my family and find who they remind me of and to love them twice as much because they are themselves, and somehow this loved person that... I never thought I would get to say another word to... And... While still not okay... I'm at least a little better... I think I recall you saying you lost a brother.... I'm... I've never had a sibling.. So I don't know what it's like to lose one, and I so sorry for your loss... I can guarantee you that you were not thought of as a reason for blame or hurt or anything, and that if anything..... You were thought of and painfully missed and acknowledge to be hurt deeply by.... Oh man... I just wanted to water you and help you grow, and... I'm apparently working through trauma I didn't realize was still so painful.... Because.... I just wanted to stop hurting when I tried to kill myself.... I didn't want to hurt anyone else but I knew it would and I fucking hated it and.... I know it's a tall ask, but... I would very much like to adopt you as a sibling and someone to be grateful for that I woke up and can maybe, hopefully shed some light on something yiu may not know yourself, if you haven't woken up after planning not to... Because... You were absolutely there in all the best ways that you could be, and... As someone who has accepted you into my chosen family as my sibling, and in being a chosen brother who has survived suicide... I hope to be able to remind you even a bit of who your brother might have been, even if presenting a hypothetical scenario that is based on somebody else's lived experiences... I love you, Tristan, and... I'm here if ever you need someone to talk to. Even if that person is gone and you can know that someone else who loves you is listening and hearing you and seeing you... Even if you just need someone to hear you. Or anyone else... I can answer many questions of my own experiences such as surviving things such as suicide, rape, false imprisonment, kidnapping, bank robbery, childhood molestation, bullying, racial hate crimes, racial discrimination, ableist discrimination, physical abuse, verbal abuse, psychological abuse, torture, pretty much anything except childbirth and menses... Anyways... This isn't the book I'm writing, but maybe a page or two of it... Tristan. I love you. Your brother loved you. Your brother also didn't blame you... That much I can guarantee..... Take care and be safe... 💜💙💚🧡💛❤️

Leonardo Sad Falleiros I can’t tell you it gets better, it doesn’t on its own, because what happened will never be “better” its awful. But it gets easier every day you get through, that’s how you do it, or at least how I have for 10 months, one day at a time. And maybe you can, have, or are getting better at a way faster curve than I am, but no matter what happens or where you are in 10 months, just keep living your life, and when you’re ready, take the leap. I hope this gives you something, I don’t mean to project, but I wish I could’ve let myself know I’d still be here in 10 months, because when shit hits the fan it can feel like the world is falling apart.

I'll close with this: Every heartache you've ever felt has shown how infinitely deep your capacity for love is. @JohnSpawn110 жыл бұрын
How can you call the original a version? Annoys me every time anyone does that. If someone writes a song it's THEIR song, not a version.
@StoufSto10 жыл бұрын
Tom Waits Easy: Version: 1. a particular form of something differing in certain respects from an earlier form or other forms of the same type of thing. See that part about "other forms", meaning not only earlier forms. Version 1 of something is still a version. Stop acting like the first one always needs to get more recognition. All Along the Watchtower, for example, is a song mostly associated with Jimi Hendrix, and rightly so. He made it popular, and Bob Dylan himself considered Jimi's version to be the definitive one. Both VERSIONS of the song are great, no need to be so pedantic.
@JohnSpawn110 жыл бұрын
StoufSto Incredible argument (not really) pointing out one of the VERY few covers that's actually outdone the original. What's next? Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt? That's better than the original as well, isn't it? The original is the original, it's NOT a version. A version is usually referred to something that's an alternative or new interpretation of something, neither of which is the case with this song (it's the original and Bon Iver didn't record any other versions than this). I'm not pedantic, it's just annoying if you have comments like *oh, Miley Cyrus' version of this is much better. This sucks." There's nothing wrong with calling a cover better than the original, but you should always show some respect to the person who wrote it and unfortuantely a lot of üeople on here don't really do that. If they think this sucks or is much inferior, why don't they fuck off and listen to Birdy?

Isn't it actually quite simple? Birdy is a singer, while Bon Iver are the real artists. Birdy has a nice clear voice and the version they made for her can be heard even while you are driving the car and listen to it on the radio. The original by Bon Iver is something that you listen to, when there is silence around you and no distracting noise. Something that you can listen to all over again after years and after you listened to it many times. Songs that have been only sung will get boring at some point and you won't listen to them after you once got sick of them. They lack the speciality which Bon Iver puts in many of their songs. Their Take Away Shows are also extremely special and I can't help and watching "Skinny Love" and "For Emma" (my fav) from the Take Away Show over and over again.
@thefirebrand09 жыл бұрын
+Verarscht Michnicht yeah Birdy was 14 when she covered it.Its a bit shallow to say she's not an artist. she has a nice clear voice,that is easy to hear....that makes her more accessible, not less of an artist.Just accept try to actually listen to Birdy's version, without the intention of comaparing it to Bon Iver, you might actually see why the song when 6x platinum in Australia. I personally haven't gotten tired of listening to this or Birdy;s version.....Music is art, not competition don't knock birdy down just because she covered a song by an artist you like....its not a competition.
@renberisha60938 жыл бұрын
Hate to drag this on, but there's a intimacy that comes with writing your own music. You feel connected to it, and the pain is yours since it literally is what you made. Covering this song is all pretty for Birdy, and she has a beautiful voice, but when you listen to this you crumble. You hear what it's really like to pour your heart out into a song, and what pain really sounds like. Birdy can make this song nice all she wants, but she cannot express the emotions that Bon Iver portrays so excellently. She makes it beautiful because of her voice and aesthetic, he makes it beautiful because of the emotion. And in the end, emotion always wins. Birdy cannot portray his emotions, only he can. This version is and always will be better than the cover.
@edenrayne84005 жыл бұрын
The only issue I have with this comment is the assumption that emotion is not subjective within music. Birdy has feelings, her voice an aesthetic make it, but the emotion she personally draws from this song is what she puts out. Music is interpretive. The original song has an emotional meaning behind it but her cover has one of its own. She can draw emotion from a song and express it in her voice or in general, maybe to her own interpretation. She didn't write the song, the original feelings are not hers and nothing can compare to the raw emotion of a song you've written yourself, but that doesn't necessarily mean there's no emotional meaning behind her cover.

I think it's more like a Rorschach Test in that you read into it based on your own experiences. To some this im sure is going to be more relatable but to the younger generation I highly suspect many will relate more with the emation from Birdy.

I remember this album as an influential healer. I was dating a girl at the time that I met as a junior in high school. She worked at subway and I had never been to that particular subway. She would always say hi to me in the hallways for no apparent reason because we didn't know each other whatsoever. One day, for some reason, I decided I wanted subway... I entered that place not knowing what exactly was in store for me. Let's just say I came back several times while she was on break to chat with her. She had just turned 18 and her parents were abusive so she moved out that day and somehow she convinced me to take her house key and get her things together for her while her parents were gone and while she was working. Keep in mind we have not known each other but a week or two. We spent the next months to come making memories together and doing the craziest things. I am 17 at this time soon to be 18. I was madly in love with her and felt a way I have never felt. I have dated a girl for 3 years and never felt this way. I thought it would never end. She was living with a co-worker and personal friend and managing a job and school which put stress on our relationship as you could imagine. Things started to get hard. I looked her in her eyes frequently and promised I would keep us together no matter the hardships ahead. I started discovering suspicious behavior from her to the point where I had a gut feeling that she was messing around with other guys.... I talked with my dad about it and he told me this, "If your gut tells you that, it's most likely true". Come to find out, she had been going to dinner with various guys. I was completely heartbroken because I gave her my everything so that she would not give up because I truly felt something. I let that incident go, though. I told her I forgive her and that i still have the same feelings for her. She assured me she wouldn't mess around anymore. A couple weeks after that I discovered text messages that proved she was staying the night with a guy. I was surely done at this point, right? Wrong, I was a fool if I've ever seen one. I didn't tell her what i knew, though. Instead i told her 2 of my friends wanted to join us for breakfast the next morning and she didn't suspect anything. I had the messages sent to my phone. I handed my friends my phone in the car, they were in the back seat. They started reading her messages that were to the guy. She was so pissed off and started to cry as if she was a victim... The plan was to make her get out of my car and walk to school because of her dishonesty. But I could not do it and gave in and instead dropped my friends off and rode around town missing school and falling back in love with her. We ended up at a walking track where she told me she had to fly back to her mothers house.... We were both in tears at this point and my dad was already furious about me missing school because i had missed lots of days because of her. I told her I'd drive her to the airport but she refused to allow that. I said my goodbyes to another lost friend. I was broken into a million pieces and this album pieced me back together, slowly. I am still recovering to this day but no matter what happens I know I have Bon Iver readily available for bandaging.

I love how hollow this song is. It makes me feel like I'm on the bus in the morning, and It's completely quiet. No talking, just silence. Then once you get off the bus, the whole day is freezing cold. And it feels like everything is in 0.75 speed. I miss it. I miss it a lot. The cold touch of my hands on my face, the way my toes would be icy in my two year old shoes, the way my nose would turn bright red. It was so nice. I wish I would have cherished it more.

I think despite being the same song, birdy's version and bon iver's version sound like 2 completely different mindsets. Birdy's version sounds like young pain, how sadness can disturb a pure soul and break their heart and innocence. But it sounds like a very emotional part of sadness. Bon's version is all the opposite. Sounds like old grief, How time broke a soul. It sounds like a heart used to the feeling of emptiness, numbness, yet so raw. Birdy's is the young innocent girl being slowly broken by her pain, and Bon's is the old man who already felt all he's ever gonna feel. Two faces of the same coin

Crying is a healthy and human thing. There is both frustration and immense sadness in this version. I think his "love" has some sort of depression/mental illness and I think that is what the "skinny love" alludes to. He says "And I told you to be patient, And I told you to be fine, And I told you to be balanced, And I told you to be kind, And now all your love is wasted, Then who the hell was I? " I think the person in the song, has really tried to give 'life' to this 'skinny' love but it all 'wasted' and the person (the speaker of the song) wonders what his purpose in all of it was ; a self defeating picture. He has tried everything but he can't go on like this anymore. Its very sad and if anyone has had a relationship with someone that has had a mental illness/depression , it really hits home... This is what I get what this song? Anyone else?

It's a very strange feeling when a song that was once a beautiful melody, now a sad reality. It has been a year now since me and the girl I love split and I haven't seen her since. Not 5 minutes goes by to where I'm not thinking about all our best and worst memories. Over time we just grew apart and everything went downhill from there. Everywhere I look I am constantly reminded of memories that we had together. Even when typing this I can almost see her smiling at me from my bed and telling me she loves me when I look back at her from my desk. Any guy out there who is struggling in a relationship due to whatever, before you do something you might regret, just ask yourself how life would be without her.

i remember everything i talked to her, how we're going to meet and have fun, had plans to go for hikes and spend all the time together but whyd she do this? i dont get it she just wanted to end it even though she loved me. she just started being distant all of a sudden and it just broke me to the point where i feel numb and im confused just how it works how ppl go back on their words i dont hate her never but she told me this song reminds her of me everytime and i hope shes all good in life shes a powerful soul who decided "in order to love someone else, i should love myself first." i just want her to be happy in life man. For you, i'd say just hold on man life is too precious and short to even think about past, look forward and live ur life. The comment is 2 years old i hope you're ok

@@SaimAsifThe_Weeb_Artist_420 hey man I'm doing good. What's crazy is I actually ended up talking with her a couple months ago but still havent seen her in the flesh in 3 years I believe. Women have came and went since then and I'm still single now but I'm just trying to live life the best I can. Appreciate the reply. Hope all is well with you too.

Three months ago I found my best friend dead from a heroin overdose after he’d been missing for a week or so. Oh Alex, my brother. All I can think are of what ifs. What if I could rewind, what if I had done this differently, what if I had checked sooner. I finally realized the answer Ive been looking for is, what if I heal? What if I allow this to teach, guide and awaken me? Alex, I promise you to live the life I deserve. Rest well my brother; if I could do it all over, I would in a heartbeat.

I'm so sorry for your loss but you are such a strong person if you can continue to have that mindset after something so tragic. I don't know you but I'm truly proud of you.
@nickbratkowski96165 жыл бұрын
Kayleigh Fraser I asked my father how he got through all of his losses, and he said; you simply just get through. Standing resolute in times of trial and tribulation is never an easy thing to do, but shows who you are as a person. The pain never grows less however your strength can grow stronger. I will always remember my friend for who he is, the young bright soul who never said one mean thing to me. I don’t know you either, but thanks for your kind words.

@@nickbratkowski9616 You have a good mindset. You can grieve for your friend, and heal at the same time. But don't blame yourself. What happened was not your fault. The best thing you can do to honour your friend, is to live you're life in a healthy way, that makes you happy. Live your life to the fullest, because it's just a blink of an eye, then it's over. Love openly and fully, create, dance, and play. We only have one life. Cherish it, my man!

this song reminds me of someone I knew in high school. we went on a school trip and she recommended this song to me. we were in different grade levels so she graduated before me, and we weren't really close friends but she was always really nice. I wonder how she is now.

Totally reminds me of Chuck, I'm watching it for the 4th or 5th time (especially to improve my english). Chuck's been one of my favourite shows since 2009 (along with HIMYM, and some others). I remember watching it in 2009 on brazilian tv, I was only 12. Now, having become a man, with several concerns, with so many questions and doubts, Chuck reminds me of a great time of my life. I wish I could go back to 2009, to my childhood, before the need to work, to worry about "greater" things such as success, money and career. As for the song, it's amazing, pretty beautiful and emotional.

Come on skinny love just last the year Pour a little salt we were never here My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer I tell my love to wreck it all Cut out all the ropes and let me fall My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Right in the moment this order's tall And I told you to be patient And I told you to be fine And I told you to be balanced And I told you to be kind And in the morning I'll be with you But it will be a different kind And I'll be holding all the tickets And you'll be owning all the fines Come on skinny love, what happened here? Suckle on the hope in light brassieres My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Sullen load is full, so slow on the split And I told you to be patient And I told you to be fine And I told you to be balanced And I told you to be kind And now all your love is wasted And then who the hell was I? And I'm breaking at the britches And at the end of all your lines Who will love you? Who will fight? Who will fall far behind?

payton if you ever see this, i cant get over you. i adore everything about you: your soft spoken awkward little self, your class, the gap in between your two front teeth, your mystery, your patience, your tall hulking figure, everything. i still think about you almost everyday. when i see you i still get butterflies in my stomach and lose my ability to speak. i know how you shove everything down and lock it there to never be seen or heard from again. i just want you to know its okay to let it out. i can see the pain in your eyes and honestly, it wears on me. whats on your mind? we might not ever be together, but i still care about you more than words can explain. it kills me having to let you go and waiting for time to tell if we will ever be. i don’t believe in love, but if it is real this is the closest ive ever felt it towards someone. its like i can physically feel you. its like theres this strong force from you to me i always seem to feel. ive never felt this sensation with anyone else. you make me believe life really is magic. i wish i wasnt such a fucking pussy and would just tell you this shit in person. but youre the same way and i hate it. you probably hate me just as much for being the same. we’re both just fucking pussies, besides ive seen you with this other girl lately. but payton, i just dont want to lose you. if i have to wait years for you ill wait. in my eyes youll always be worth it, the whole waiting part just kills me though. time is so precious, and it hurts so bad knowing i could maybe be spending this time with you.
