He's not singing about a person. He's singing about his guitar, and how much it means to him. One of the best ideas and the best tracks ever released by Bon Jovi.

I went to go see bon jovi in Toronto at the beginning of this tour and i still remember (kinda) what he said during the interlude at 3:50. He was saying that "when he was writing this song he was in a very dark spot in his career (obviously pointing to the departure of Richie) he was trying so hard to get back to writing music but his guitar wouldn't allow him to. He tried to speak to "her" but she wasnt saying anything back for about a year and finally after a while "he asked her for permission" and she allowed him and he began falling back in love with the guitar and this beautiful piece came from that! Such a beautiful song! I have been a fan of bon jovi for 15 years and have loved him and his music ever since the lost highway album!
