I've just come back from Japan myself, but I, unfortunately, missed the bon odori season by a bit, though it definitely seems like a cool experience! Hope you'll enjoy your new life in Belfast :)

Wow - you skipped Bon-Odori but I am sure you found other interesting things in Japan! What was the most interesting? As for Belfast - we already started to look for a house and schools for the kids. Looks interesting - it can be a cultural shock after so many years in Japan. :)

Yeah, we arrived in Japan when the last bon odori festivals were happening so we didn't get to go to any. There are lots of interesting things in Japan; I quite admired the beauty of a lot of the places that I visited, and the range of activities in Japan is also really nice, there's always something you can go out and do for fun (karaoke, game centres, animal cafes...), I find that there is a really nice atmosphere to Japan when you're there as a visitor. I also got to practice my Japanese quite a bit, and that therefore, gave me some more motivation for studying. I'm sure that all the differences between Northern Ireland and Japan would cause a bit of culture shock, especially as Northern Ireland is quite unique in many ways compared to other European countries, though I'm sure that it's something that you'll all get used to with time. The children will probably also experience many differences in the education system at first too. I'm sure that there'll be more opportunities to travel around Europe now though, especially thanks to the low-cost airlines operating in Europe, it's quite easy to get cheap flights.
