Bonanza - Episode 02 - Death on Sun Mountain - The Cartwrights go up against two San Francisco men who plan to get rich by killing off the antelope herds--which the Indians rely on for their food--and selling the meat to Virginia City's swarms of silver miners.
Death on Sun Mountain
Director: Paul Landres
Writers: Gene L. Coon, David Dortort
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 19 September 1959 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Burdette and Thorne are selling native antelope meat to the "diggers of Sun Mountain" (the miners) at outrageous prices. The lack of their native food causes the Paiutes to steal Ponderosa beef. The Cartwrights decide to sell their beef directly to the miners, hoping to ease the tensions with the Paiutes and keep their herd from being rustled. This interferes with Burdette's business plan and he tells Thorne to stop the beef from arriving in Virginia City. Thorne and his men accomplish this by dressing up as Indians and killing all but one miner. Harris is left alive to tell everyone it was the Paiutes that ambushed them.
Reviews:
"Any kind of a mining boom will always bring out those like Barry Sullivan and Leo Gordon who will find a way to exploit the situation. In Sullivan's case it's food and he has Gordon and a crew of hunters killing off the wild antelope on which the Paiute Indians subsist.
Which brings Ben Cartwright into the situation. Lorne Greene on behalf of the Paiute chief Winnemucca confronts Sullivan and says he'll undercut Sullivan by selling beef cattle to the miners at reasonable prices. Something goes against the Cartwright grain concerning exploiting starvation for indecent profit.
Sullivan in the end has something of a conscience, Leo Gordon does not and that sets up the final confrontation between miners, exploiters, Cartwrights and Paiutes.
Also note a good performance from Jeanne Bates as an understanding saloon girl.
Good second episode of the series." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"I think it's in this episode (it's in one of the early episodes but not the pilot), but count how many times someone mentions the Comstock Lode silver strike and the reply is always, "It's not just a silver strike, it's a BONANZA." Apparently, this was an attempt to explain the series title to the audience but it was done a couple times too many within a single hour. Just one of the many things we all love about the series. Also, as in most early first season episodes, notice the adversarial relationship between the Cartwrights and the townfolk. This would, of course, change in later episodes. Basically, the town is against them and their values early on but the Cartwrights later become Virginia City's leading citizens. It's only the jealous criminals who are against them in subsequent seasons.
Overall, a good episode and worth watching for the early series and character development." Written by paulw-18 on IMDb.com

I'm 5'10 and 300 lbs. Where most average horses are 13- 14 hands . I've owned a few horses 15 - 16 hands tall . Weighing out around 1000 lbs. Certainly large enough to carry a follow Texan like Dan Blocker . In fact one of my best horses was a Tennessee walker that was over 16 hands . With a gorgeous gate and smooth riding . So to answer your question they're out there .

One of my favorite episodes is the one where Hoss had to fight the champion pro boxer. He couldn't compete of course and was getting whipped good. Adam said " Don't fight him, wrestler him " ! That did it ! Hoss put a bear - hug on him and it was all over ! That mountain of a man could squeeze the air out of anybody !

The sad thing about this movie 🍿 is that they blamed Mark Burdette and it’s true he hired Thorn but Thorn was the one who was the real killer. Mark Burdett only killed Thorne who deserved to die. 😮😮😮
@trwent
@trwent 7 ай бұрын
Burdette was hardly innocent of all wrongdoing. He shortsightedly ordered the slaughter of many antelope, knowing this would start a war between the Indians and the white man, and then HE would be the one who would pick up the pieces and get rich at the end, and maybe even take over the Ponderosa from the Cartwrights. I do not put Burdette much higher on the moral scale than Thorn; in fact maybe even lower.

One of the first special 10 Episodes of Bonanza in the 1959-60 season that did loosely follow the history of the great silver strike in 1858-59 that became the Comstock Lode, and the founding of Virginia City. Being a history buff, those first 10 Bonanza Episodes are my all-time favorite episodes of the show. After that, Bonanza stories became more standard Hollywood / TV western. There are two great books that inspired the show, THE BIG BONANZA (1876) Dan DeQuille and ROUGHING IT (1872) Mark Twain. Both authors had lived in Virginia City during the original glory days of the silver strike, both as newspaper men writing for "The Territorial Enterprise" and living in the genuine 'Wild West' era. The Bonanza Season 1 Episode 5, "Enter Mark Twain" shows the arrival of Twain in 1860 roughly, when Twain actually did not arrive in Nevada Territory until July 1861.

The days you weren't allowed to sit and watch TV all day, and only allowed to touch it to clean it, or you were the remote control with permission. Great scenery, great actors, great storylines. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Maybe get mad and fight, then it's over, not hold grudges and hate to kill. The bad guys never win. We need more like this. Youngons forget or don't know, Work , do a good job and do it right, feel good about yourself. Kindness is still alive. Times were hard, but honest and good. Lessons to be learned. Sleep well at night. I'm binge watching today. Earned that right at my age.Well, some do kill that are Bad people. Greed doesn't pay. Truth comes out and peace can be found.

Back in the day I remember my parents were debating whether or not to get one of them newfangled colour TVs because they were so much more expensive and the picture quality wasn't as sharp. Later on, I developed my own secret technique for making my TV come on in colour. It involved staring at a spot in the centre and "wishing" in the colour, which would gradually start from the centre and slowly move to the edges. After about 5 minutes the whole picture was colour. I even taught my secret technique to my friends, but only a couple of them could do it. Of course, it only worked after you drank 12 beers.

What happened between Episode 1 & 2? In episode 1 they were afraid to go into Virginia City alone. Now are happy there and think that they can bully the miners. A much better story than Episode 1! And better characters, more like the Cartwrights we know. I'm curious about the story of the change but didn't quickly find it. Episode 1: Air Date: Sep 12, 1959 Directed By: Edward Ludwig Written By: David Dortort Episode 2: Air Date: Sep 19, 1959 Directed By: Paul Landres Written By: Gene L. Coon, David Dortort

This is such a great family program. Some of the acting is almost comical but im sure it was considered adequate during the time . The word "Bonanza" was only used 6 times. 😂

When l first saw Candy, l thought that sounded like a girl's name. ( lt is) . Why didn't the producers call him something else to make it more masculine ? And why did he wear the same red shirt / black vest all the time, ( on every episode I saw) . His name was pronounced Canary, but I thought it was CA - NA- RY , like a bird .
