Excellent episode, all of Adam's stories where he plays the main lead he always gives us a very, very interesting story, indeed. The writers wrote something most interesting every time when Adam played the main role. I will never learn the why the huge & fine difference between Adams stories and all the silly (mostly) shows with same old baby Cartwright and most of Hoss' antics, etc. Adam never put forth a bad film.

Without the curious student of information, there are no teachers. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are these same gent's. In this case the moral, and the necessity of the story was the teacher gets hurt, Adam takes over as proxy, and viola, history comes into play, past, present and freedom.

Mariette Hartley always tells the story that she slept with all the Cartwright’s in all the episodes she was in. Slept is rather ambiguous but she did kiss Ben and Hoss but never Adam or Joe. Unfortunately Pernell Roberts always thought he was above everyone else in his acting however I think they were all excellent actors especially Dan Blocker. It is a shame that Pernell was so serious as I think it would have been wonderful if all four could have finished the series before Dan died. There were many moral storylines some written by Michael Landon which Bonanza was good at. I did like the funny ones my favourite was The Hayburner which I understand was Pernell’s favourite comedy episode which was written by stunt man on Bonanza Alex Sharpe.

He didn't always think that he was above everyone else, he was a different type of actor and sought to improve some of the storylines because they were sometimes incompetent, he wanted to see the brothers become more responsible and mature, having lives of their own and not always bowing down to their father,, even though he (,Ben) would sometimes give them a little slack to venture out but they never really left the Ponderosa within the storylines, plus who continuously wanted to have them as grown adults to be told to go to bed as though they were grade school children? Pernell Roberts just spoke his mind. Even producer David Dortort admitted that Pernell Roberts was right but it was too late but Bonanza did ok after his departure but to me and for me it just didn't feel the same
