EXCELLENT! A superb episode. I'd like to have seen a scene with Little Joe quizzing him about the war. Ben could say "Well, he could have read all the same books." and the Gentleman could exclaim "The best parts are not in the history books!" and tell a tale about something or someone. Or, better, he could tell a story that differs from the history books and is embarrassing to a leading figure, Joe thinks that he has exposed him, but the Gentleman exclaims "Of course the history books don't tell it the way it really happened. Nobody wants to be remembered for xyz." The writers and actors did a great job with this episode.

I like Adam too but I guess he was almost leaving the show by now. He was pretty disgruntled and difficult to work with as time went on so maybe he was written out more often to appease both sides. He left in series 6 so by this episode we are getting pretty close.

As a boy I loved all the work of the brilliant John Dehner. He was great in this episode, made me ignore the bad French accent. This episode made me think of Edgar Allen Poe's C. Auguste Dupin. Jean Lafitte (Laffite) is basically my philosophy of pleasure at age 66. Why not, life is short.. This is the first Bonanza episode where I think the comedy worked--because of John Dehner.

Yes. In this episode Ben said "But he died a long time ago." How can you really be sure who was buried at sea? If he was as portrayed in this episode, he certainly could have faked his death to get out of some debt. Born in 1780, so he should be over 80 years old in this episode.
