Bonanza - Episode 36 - The Mill - The Cartwrights' neighbor Tom Edwards has lived as a paraplegic, ever since an accident involving Ben Cartwright and a gun.
The Mill
Director: John Rich
Writer: Halsted Welles
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 1 October 1960 USA
Filming Locations: Lake Sherwood, California, USA
Storyline:
"The Cartwrights' neighbor Tom Edwards has lived as a paraplegic, ever since an accident involving Ben Cartwright and a gun. His ranch is going to waste. His wife Joyce is a longtime friend of Ben, and Ben decides to help the Edwards couple by making Tom a business proposition: the Cartwrights will build a grain mill on Edwards' land. In return, Ben only wants his investment money back, plus fifteen percent. Tom and his hired hand Ezekiel are suspicious of Ben, but Tom agrees to the deal. The Cartwright men build the mill, but tension begins to rise when Ezekiel makes comments which rekindle Tom's suspicion." Written by Ken Miller on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"This particular Bonanza episode touched on some very adult issues and was borrowed from the classics. If you're going to get inspired, it's good to be inspired by the best.
In this case the plot of The Mill is taken from none other than the Bard himself in what some consider his greatest work. Harry Townes plays a paralyzed Othello, confined to a wheelchair and having to be assisted by his general factotum Claude Akins. His Desdemona is Dianne Foster and it is hinted that due to injuries Townes can't do his husbandly duties. Foster has an itch that needs scratching, but is repelled by the thought of Akins doing the scratching.
In the meantime Akins is a swaggering Iago in the piece who drinks and gambles with Townes who winds up owing him considerable money. He encourages jealousy in Townes, first over Pernell Roberts and then over Lorne Greene. Townes is in that wheelchair over a drunken shooting accident that involved Greene. All in all a recipe for tragedy.
This western version of Othello was nicely done, but I'm wondering just how many people recognized the source when watching it." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"The story line is excellent. A woman who loves her husband feels unloved because he cannot learn to get along without the use of his legs. (This is also a theme that is played over and over in Bonanza. In this particular episode, Ben seems to have an attraction to the wife and decides his family needs to help them find some sort of way to make a living.
Besides the husband and wife, there's a "friend" who is actually what I believe to be a crooked gambler. Claude Atkins is the only character actor, I think, who could have played this bad boy row to perfection. In the end, his character becomes so evil that you wish he would die.
Morally, I cringe at Ben's kissing the wife and then at Adam's admitting that he's fine with it. This is the very thing that the man is accusing the Cartwright's of, and Ben's actions are simply proving him true. I think Ben had no right acting on his attraction to this woman who is unhappy in her marriage. But that's just a question of morals." Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com

@Rosalinda Young. Yes, I love that old-fashioned respect that true gentlemen had for the truly feminine ladies. A true feminine lady is a woman who loves it when a man treats her in a feminine way. He rises when she stands, he opens the door for her, and he does a lot of other things that shows genuine respect for her.

This is a good one The Mill. This is one of my favorite ones. Here we have all 4 Cartwright men loving the Mrs. Edward. She knows her drunk husband is no used to her and they won't fired their devilish con hired hand who up to no good. He wants the wife, house and land. Drink and Gamble it all. Old man Ben taking advantage of the whole deal seeing mrs Edwards need a new husband and Ben single. She knows what she foing too. That why she goes out to Ben house to lay all her burdens on him. And the men building the mill gir them all to make more money was a good idea. The couple never file for a divorce either. Domestic violence doesn't solve nothing. Ben had high hopes and she played him and telling him she loves him.later Now two men end up dead over this woman. She wasn't planning on moving in with a better man. Took off with the money of the property ect. She leaves Ben snd move on. She came out ending up single so later she can remarry. So sad the ending for especially. Ben. Kiss and say Goodbye. No remote. No children . No courthouse involved. Back in the days. Cases like this happen all the time now more in life. In the name of love. Ben goes home to the ponderosa and he will need more than a glass of wine to get over another heartbreak for sure. Break out a gallon of Jack Daniels instead. 😊

Nowadays you could use that same exact mill to grind up old circuit boards for the purposes of precious metals extraction. Set up a smelter right next to it and power the bellows online off that same wheel with a belt drive. The term "online" actually dates back to the 1800s because it meant that a piece of machinery was connected to the same rotating shaft via a belt drive.

At the end Joyce reminds Ben, that after Marie's death he left the Ponderosa for a while to see new places and meet new people. I keep wondering how long he was gone for and did he leave Little Joe (I think he was about 5 years old), who just lost his mother, with some strangers or just Hop Sing and Adam to look after him? 🤔

Correct; Claude Akins played the Federal Marshal bringing Dave Walker in. Actors playing different roles in different episodes is nothing new. Watch "Dragnet" with Jack Webb, and you'll see a whole stable of actors and actresses (at least two dozen) playing one different role after another in different episodes. A few actors and actresses who were recently seen just a few episodes before this one of Bonanza that were later in Dragnet are Don Dubbins, who played Todd McCarren (sp?) in the Bitter Water episode, and Merry Anders (as a strawberry blonde), who played his fiancee Virginia Keith in the same episode. Merry Anders would later play Policewoman Dorothy Miller (but a brunette by this time) in the 1967-70 incarnation of Dragnet, while Dubbins would play various characters on the late 60s version of Dragnet.

My only question is from a legal perspective, whether or not all those gambling debts would stand up in a civil court. Regardless, it was very short-sighted of Tom to continue racking up debts to someone who was obviously in it for the long game. He should've gotten rid of Ezekiel way before it got to that point.

A real lady is a very feminine woman which is what I am. I show the utmost respect for the man (if I had a husband or boyfriend) that I'm with. He shows the utmost respect for me too. He rises when I stand up, he opens the door for me, he lets me go into a room first, he takes his hat off indoors, and he enjoys doing things for me. I love to do things for him too. I show him that I appreciate everything that he does for me, and he shows me that he appreciates everything that I do for him. I love it when he takes charge for the main situations. That's not true if that man is a true born again Christian. A true born again Christian man would never go after a married woman!

@Lynette Palecek Yeah, a true born again Christian man would never do ANYTHING wrong, would he? And if he did, he would not really BE a true born again Christian. Circular reasoning at its finest.

Harry Townes' terrible acting about ruined this episode.

Ben is almost a too-perfect character, it's nice they wrote him to have the flaw of being a homewrecker. Perfect characters are boring.

That last fighting scene had the worst acting ever. Fake fear and fake reaction to being ‘hit’! Claud Akins character was not believable AT ALL. Worst episode ever. Still love Bonanza, just not this episode.
