Trying to fly from Wichita, KS to Jackson, WY in one day. Dealing with weather, mountains, headwinds and treacherous terrain. After flying the valleys below the clouds we attempted to go VFR on top at 17,500 feet to get above the peaks and the weather.
Leaving Wichita before the break of dawn, heading to Dalhart, TX for some breakfast and a strong crosswind landing and take off. Then a quick fuel stop in Santa Fe, NM before flying the valleys into the Rocky Mountains. Flew over Mesa Grande, Comb Ridge, Monument Valley and Canyonlands National Park to Moab, UT. From there, we attempted to get to Jackson, WY by flying above the clouds at 17,500 feet, using oxygen, in our normal aspirated 1982 Bonanza V35B.

Had my “M” model V-tail up to 17,500 just once in the 8 years I owned it. It was putting out so little horsepower that the cabin heater couldn’t keep up!

Flying a debonair through that Moab area from Phoenix area to South Dakota, we decided that if we had an engine failure, we would just have to put it down wherever they would find the wreckage the easiest. Not a lot of options out there. Next trip we did the east side of the mountains. A lot more relaxing.

I honestly can’t understand why you don’t have way way way more subscribers. The content you put out is calming, professional, and the edits are crisp and effortless. You enjoy seat of the pants flying, pushing your limits and the airframes limits in a safe and controlled way, and you’re pleasant to watch and listen to. And you have an aircraft model that is storied and infamous, and its horizontal tail brother is one of the most common GA airframes of all time. I really look forward to your videos and encourage you strongly to keep finding cool stuff to do and sharing it with us - we are lucky for it!

Nice landing @ KDHT. (Nice takeoff too!) Oh, and nice Steak & Eggs. = D Was expecting to see more at 17,500, but I’m assuming it wasn’t noteworthy. I was surprised to see that you guys drove all the way to Jackson, in weather, after that already pretty long day! Go baby go!

Great video, Which model Vtail Bonanza are able to hit 170 knots in cruise? And is that mostly flyibg low altitudes where engine has close to full power?

Good in air decision making (and in ground). Thank you for sharing. Could be cool to talk and show your oxygen set up and how well it worked for you.

I've had my Bonanza up to FL190 and I'm sure it would have gotten up to FL 210 easily. And it's not turbocharged. 😎

Thanks for reminding us how much that tail wags. Curious would V-tail B owners be willing to buy an STC'd aft body strake to eliminate that? no added drag - easy install?
