Spiced rum isn't a traditional category of rum at all, it's a modern anachronism (Captain Morgan is arguably the first example, and definitely the first popular one). Most spiced rum, like Captain Morgan, is not flavoured in a noticeable way with baking spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice, but rather mostly with vanilla (or vanillin), making them the rum equivalent of vanilla vodka.

This isn't close to "every" Costco liquor - just every one you could get in New York. Costco sells multiple special vintage Scotch (I have a 17-year sherry finished Speyside, for example), and the Irish cream is regional - the eastern US gets the Irish Cream that's a Bailey's competitor, whereas here in Seattle we get Irish "Country" cream, which is wine-based.

In a lot of tropical countries were rum is made due to proximity to sugar production 6 years is too long to age a spirit because the heat will ruin it. However in guatemala they age rum high in the mountains where the climate is much cooler (think southern appalachia) and they can age for that long and much longer.

Great vid! FYI For those looking to avoid additives in tequila, 100% agave doesn’t mean anything. Costco does have additives. They can legally put up to 1% of 4 different additives and still legally say it’s “100% agave”. No hate though, if someone gave me a glass of any Kirkland tequilas, I would dip it 100% - pun intended

One thing worth mentioning, why Costco can sell these liquors at such low prices, is because they spend zero money marketing them. Surely for Grey Goose or Johnnie Walker, 50% of the cost the consumer pays is just to support the marketing budget. Costco's French vodka does not pay for any glossy magazine ads, doesn't sponsor any sporting events or concerts, doesn't do any bar promotions, etc. They have no name brand to protect and promote. They give this savings to their members.

Was digging everything up until the anejo tequila, I feel like you show up to anejo specifically for those bourbony flavors that casks give. I would not call that something done for the American palette and to call it not real tequila seems like doing the whole style of anejo a disservice.
@jerensteffen6 ай бұрын
A lot of anejo tequilas have sugar added to them. I believe this is what he was referring to, not the necessarily the aging process itself. But it is true that tequila sommeliers generally won't touch aged tequila.

@Svartalf146 ай бұрын
NOTE, since bourbon whisky has to use new casks, used bourbon casks usually end up being used to age Scotch... that's likely what happened to the blended Scotch here. also, the quality of a blended depends hugely on the quality of the malt whiskies used to make it, and by the ratio of malt to grain (usually maize) liquor used in the blend.

I use kirkland products for the base spirits in a lot of my cocktails, the Cognac XO gets a lot of use in new orleans style cocktails, normally I would grab a VS or VSOP Cognac for that, but the Kirkland XO comes in at the same or better price than those. It doesn't compete against the much more expensive Cognacs, but it creams everything else at a similar price point. The French Vodka seriously tastes like Grey Goose - I decant it into a grey goose bottle anyway to make pouring easier 😆
