My dad was in the USMC in Korea calendar year 1952-1953. He had R&R in Tokyo in summer 1952 and happened to visit the SEIKO watch factory. To make a long story short, Dad loved SEIKO watches after that and that's all he ever wore until he died in 2010. My nephew still wears Dad's SEIKO chronogragh watch which has every thing on it including a slide rule. Never mind the kid is too young to have ever heard of a slide rule.

Great quality watch there. Three years ago, I too was looking for a good quality watch and, after long time, had the choice narrowed to Seiko 007 or Tissot V8. Got the tissot in the end because of the beautiful brown leather strap it came with.

Is a nice watch. I love Seiko gear. My current daily wear is a SARB065 'Cocktail Time'. Wasn't released outside Japan AFAIK but you can get them from numerous online stores. Great accuracy, build quality and styling for its price point. Would highly recommend a Seiko for anyone interested in getting into mechanical watches. I've known a few people now to have the same experience, but what drove me to wanting a mechanical watch was owning a smart watch. I had 3 different smart watches and they were never quite right. Interesting how high tech sometimes drives you back to something simpler.

Thought I would update. I got my Sea Urchin and it is beautiful..but, I couldn't get the idea of owning a SKX007 out of my mind and quickly bought one of those, too. I love them both, but I like that there are more mods out there for the SKX and it just looks a little better in my mind. They are all great budget watches which can be worn daily.

Great video. I bought one £144. My twin brother bought the Omega £2800. From two meters away you can't really tell the difference. Both keep perfect time. Only difference is .He went to Whitby in a caravan. I went on a safari to Kenya with the money I saved.And it's still keeping perfect time.Don't be a poser stick to Seiko. You won't be disappointed.I was even asked in Kenya is that an Omega. HaHaHa.

Miles? Really? And who gives a shit if other people are wearing Seiko 5? It's a nice automatic inspired by the Submariner from a reputable brand with history. A very nice gate drug into horology. After a while Techmoan will want to upgrade, probably to a 'real' Seiko diver like the Samurai, Turtle, Monster, or Sumo. And then he'll move on to Swiss entry level luxuries like Tissot, Hamilton, Frederique Constant, Oris Tudor. And before you know it, he'll be considering Omega, Rolex, Breitling, Tag Heuer Carrera/Monaco, IWC, Panerai or even Grand Seiko.

I'm a great fan of your videos on vintage equipment. Recently this video showed in my YT home screen and I found it really useful again since my watch is in revision and I needed a backup. So I bought this one myself and I completely agree with your review. The watch is surprisingly heavy and solid, the finish is flawless and can compete with Omega and co. So a big thumbs up and thanks for this video, keep up the good work.

Nice watch that. I have a Seiko 5 myself, but a "military" model. It doesn't look nearly as smart as this model, but I really like the simple looks, the mechanism and the glass back. And for the 40€ I paid for it, it's been a really nice watch - my first "real" watch, until I get a good paying job...

I saw your video over a year ago and finally took the plunge last month. I got mine from Amazon UK and after using a gift voucher from my son, paid under £140.00 for it. I'm well pleased and its accurate to a couple of seconds a day, which is near enough for any analog watch. Like you I'm no watch freak/geek, so thanks for the review and introduction to the Seiko 5. I've had a Seiko for flipping years now. It's proper chunky and I like it for the same reason Mr Moan likes his. Great to know more and more people r getting to know about the daylight robbery that some high end makers price their watched at. This Seiko looks imo better than the deepsea and instead of paying £10k you pay £100+ depending on what Seiko u decide to buy and all will last you decades plus everyone appreciates the Seiko if they know anything about watches, you will never be looked down upon for wearing one.

Thanks for the excellent review. I got the "Made in Japan" version (with a J1 instead of the K1) from a Singapore dealer for $160 US. I love the quality of the construction, weight and feel. The only minor quibble I have is that the dial seems to have a black plastic paint coating. This gives it a sort of matte finish. The Rolex Submariner, OTOH, has a black ceramic layer, which gives a more glossy look. Still, at $160, I am not complaining ;-)

I still own a Seiko Automatic from the early seventies and it keeps great time even today. Another line of watches that have interested me are the Citizen "Eco-Drive" models which keep things charged up and running with a solar cell in their face. There are even radio controlled versions that never need be set and keep time accurate to the second. So they become self powered and self setting and aren't a lot of money.

Very nice choice. I bought a Rotary Aquaspeed AGB00026/W/04 for exactly the same reason. It was as close to the '007' Rolex Submariner that I could find at the time. Because the brand names start with the same letters, I get a lot of double-takes, usually followed by "where did you buy it". I like the fact that the Seiko is a proper movement though.

I have a few nice watches and have a Seiko "Dancing Hands" that I've had for almost 30 years and still runs perfectly. I didn't know that this watch existed and a mechanical watch for that money is a steal. I think I'm going to get one - Thanks TM :) BTW - I've also got the Omega Speedmaster which was the first space qualified watch and was used on Apollo 11 (hence Moonwatch) and Apollo 13. Gene Kranz who was Flight Director for NASA who oversaw those and other flights wore a Seiko 5 watch, so both Seiko and Omega are part of the moon story.

Orient makes a nice watch too. I purchased a Mako a while back, it was quite a bit cheaper back then. Like the Seiko it has a good quality SS band and case, good looking dial. The Seiko looks a little better, and I like the fatter hands which are easier to see in the dark, but when I purchased my Orient Mako it was much cheaper than the Seiko, now it's the other way around. I'd like to get a Seiko 5 too, but I really can't justify two automatics. Yet. So many toys, so little money. The Orient Mako comes in several colour schemes. The downside of an automatic watch is you need to adjust the date on some months and set the time once and a while since they don't keep time nearly as well as a quartz. If you don't wear it it winds down and needs to be set again. Also the downside of the less expensive automatics (or any watch, really) is they use mineral glass which tends to get scratched. Sapphire crystals are much harder to scratch but tends to be on much more expensive watches. I wound up getting an inexpensive solar Casio for all around stuff and I use my Orient for dress occasions, since I seem to always hit the face when I am doing stuff around the house. The Casio uses solar cell technology so doesn't need a battery, but is quartz so is very accurate. It operates for 6 months on a good solar charge which takes little time in daylight, and I don't worry about scratching it up. www.amazon.com/Casio-AQS800W-1B2VCF-Solar-Multi-Function-Ana-Digi/dp/B005MDPAPU/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1480483636&sr=8-6&keywords=casio+solar

Yes you can, I have a Mako and a Mako XL and the price makes them the best value watches I own. I also have 4 more Seiko (3 automatics and one solar). If you do pay more, the grade of the watch gets better but not massively so, I also have a Steinhart Ocean One, that just oozes quailty (3-4 times the price), then next to my Omega Seamaster.... We are blokes, we don't get to wear fancy jewellery , so do watches instead, of course you can have more than one or two watches.

Having owned a Tag Heuer link automatic for ten years I can fully appreciate the mechanical intricacies that goes into a watch such as this. Especially when the cost of the watch and associated servicing is miniscule in comparison. I would like to aquire a Role however I can't justify the cost so this may well act as a very close equal both in terms of looks and mechanical function! I certainly have no brand snobbery as for me it's all about the watch not the name. Great watch with yet another great review (I presumed you only did dash cam reviews!).

All great watches with crystal glass front and water resistant to depths deeper than I'll ever swim. . I'm looking for a new watch to replace my ageing 'Ripcurl' battery analog job.... And I like the look of the Seiko 5, so thanks for the heads-up Matt.

I'm not a watch kind of person, I've never bought one. But I can see how nice this one is, it's amazing. Although this is around £121, even if it was £350, I'd still much rather spend £350 on this Seiko 5 than spending the same amount on a smart watch like the Apple Watch, or Pebble watch or something similar. Even though the 'smart watches' do more, I'd chose this any day.

Nice little video.You covered many of the aspects of Seiko. I collect many different brands and I am pleased to say that I have a Seiko 5 limited edition, Seiko Skx009 (Pepsi) in my collection. I also have a Rolex Batman, Orient Star, and an Omega. My collection to many watch enthusiasts is awful, but I buy what I like and not what others tell me to buy. Anyway, one important thing when you adjust the day/date on any automatic watch please make sure you set the time to 6am/pm first. During the night the watch will change the date automatically, but different brands change at different times and if you just start changing the date like in your video then you could chip or even bend one of the little cogs inside the watch. Keep up the good work.

Paul lebbon would you recommend giving the crown a good few turns to build up the power, or just shake the watch? Some say do give the crown a few twists, some say don't. Does it even work with this watch?
@Paullebbon
@Paullebbon 7 жыл бұрын
So sorry for the late reply. Some Seiko watches do not have a wind function, meaning that you have to rotate the watch to get it to wind-up. For example the SkX007/009 watches cannot be manually wound. For watches that can be wound by the crown it is best to use it. If you start collecting automatic watches then you should invest in an electric watch winding box. The watches will rotate inside the box and keep them in good condition. Automatic watches cannot be over wound like manual watches. Again I am sorry for the late reply and I wish you well.

The ring on the face turns for divers. when suba diving the ring is turned mark the start of your dive minute hand. So when you start your dive. You know how long you was down when you check your depth. You use the two too know with your dive chart if you need too stop on the way up to keep from getting decompression sickness.

I used to be somewhat shy about my stick insect wrists. Nice to see you share my "deformity" and have no qualms about sharing it with the world. ;-) Oh and nice watch! "As always...", well an appropriate ending for this video. Cheers.

Great watch these Seiko 5, got mine more than 20 years ago at less than 50 quid. Seiko is still my favourite watch, the modern era I use the kinetic model now. Seiko 5 is still my first "real" watch.

My Seiko Day/Date automatic chrono from 1964 has never been opened. Has had three crystals and will start right up when I Pick It Up! I have a Breitling chrono that I had to pay $800 just to get it to run again!

Servicing is mentioned below but I thought I would just add a couple of things I found from owning an automatic. Mine is a Citizen 200m Divers NY0040 watch and has a long standing movement etc. Really nice watch etc. but it did need regular adjusting as it would lose a few minutes everyday. It then stopped working - well if you hand wind it it works but not for long and although you can hear the movement winding inside, clearly it doesn't. Popped along to a Citizen dealer to see how much the service cost, £125. Original cost of the watch £129. I might get it fixed one day but decided to go for a G-Shock - Solar/Multiband/200m and, seeing as it is my work watch, going to take a beating. Might try another automatic at some point but it has put me off a bit...

I've got a Seiko 200m diver with the pepsi coloured bezel. I fitted a blue nato strap. Yes they are nice looking watches without having to spend a fortune.

Very fine watch indeed, I'm not a watch nerd either, but I am a history geek, so when I bought my Rolex I had to get the same one Eisenhower wore (and that Chuck Yeager may have been wearing when he first broke the sound barrier - some sources disagree). Also have my eye on an Omega Speedmaster, only because the Apollo crews were issued them. Tragic nerdism, I know.

My grandfather owned both a Rolex and a Seiko 5. Untill his retirement, I believe he mainly wore the Seiko 5. It still works after 40-50 years. My first nice watch I bought was the new Seiko Turtle. It's a real dependable watch, I only take it off when taking a shower. A friend of mine who is really into watches and has multiple Omega's and other high end watches really likes it too and wants to get one after I showed it to him. Whenever something does happen to the movement, which is unlikely, you can just pop a new one in for around 80 dollars/euros/pounds.

Oh yes this is the timepiece along with good reputation and attraction as it looks a bit more similar to rolex. Moreover thanks for your video as for providing complete specifications about this nice looking model. In future i would be much satisfied to buy this for its reasonable price and remarkable mechanism.
