New style drains for tile shower floors and shower pans do not require a pre-slope and traditional 40 mil pvc pan liner. Instead, they incorporate a “bonding flange” to directly attach a bonded membrane like Schluter Kerdi or a liquid waterproofing like redgard or hydro ban. The benefit of using these drains is that the waterproofing is directly under the tile instead of a mortar bed or dry pack that constantly gets saturated with water. These systems are prone to issues because often times the weep holes get clogged and cause efflorescence, cracked grout, moldy silicone, and other unsightly and unsanitary problems.
In this video, I compare the most popular drain - the Schluter Kerdi bonding flange drain kit and grate - with a new one that I really like. The flo fx drain has improved on many of the design flaws of the schluter Kerdi drain and the hydro ban bonding flange.
Tiled showers are beautiful, durable, and clean if they are done properly. This video goes into detail how the drains are installed correctly, and what the differences are between them and the old traditional style drains.
