Hey theres something that confuses me. Why is H2O bent instead of linear? Should the H have bonds and the 4 dots of electrons be on the top and bottom of oxygen?
@stevegerrish67208 жыл бұрын
When you have extra electrons surrounding the central atoms the un-bonded electron pairs repel the other atoms attached to the central atom (in this case the two hydrogen atoms). Because of this its electron shape and its molecular shape are different.
@ruhruh79618 жыл бұрын

s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/fc/3c/59/fc3c596e2c4306c838f5f27f015a7fa7.jpg check out this chart, the blue spheres represent electrons surrounding the central atom you can see how they take up space and therefore repel other bonded atoms surrounding the central atom.

Thanks! This really helps my studies and makes it easier to understand
@yousefal-awadi17428 жыл бұрын
Calvin Malagon having 2 dots or electrons is called a lone pair While water H2O consists of 3 atoms it might be linear or bent The central atom is O and has two lone pairs one at the bottom and the other at the top The rule says if there is a lone pair(s) in the central atom when the compound consists of three atoms it will be bent CO2 is linear because the central atom carbon has no lone pair. I hope that u got the point mate :) U choose ):)

Out of curiosity, I googled quadruple bonds, and lo and behold, found some results. Chromium (II) acetate (which is synthesized) has a quadruple bond, and are seen in other transition metals. Okay, how about a quintuple bond? The wikipedia article about it makes my brain hurt, but it appears to exist though really rare. It also appears that some pretty whack stuff starts happening with the chemical structures at this point. but surely, sextuple bonds cannot exist too! Oh wait, there are two, diatomic dimolybdenum and ditungsten (which are gases that can only exist at like, 5000 degrees C). Okay, how about SEPTUPLE bond, where there would be fourteen shared electrons?? Wikipedia has dropped out of the race, and now there's only theoretical chemistry articles that stipulate it might be possible, along with even octople bonds. This is just ridiculous now. Is there, theoretically, no limit?

Why don't quadruple bands exist? Why can;t there be a quadruple bond of carbon? C2
@madaboutit23068 жыл бұрын
cuz logic
@makeitmusical8 жыл бұрын
A neutral C2 doesn't actually usually exist. Usually it comes as acetylide which is C2(2-)
@spacegames46858 жыл бұрын
But why
@makeitmusical8 жыл бұрын
Electrons like to spread out when possible. Having a quadruple band would mean all of the density is at the center. Although achieving an octet is desirable, electrons also do repel, thus at that point your repelling force is greater than the force of bonding.
