You can soften butter in the microwave just make sure it doesn't melt or what I do is fill a glass up with hot water and let it sit in the cup for a few minutes then dump out all the water and set the butter stick standing up under the cup for a few minutes and it should be room temperature.

I used to bake professionally. I put my butter in the microwave, but 10 seconds at a time. If you chop it first, it should work quite quick. But under the arm is really clever too. Go with whatever you’re most comfortable with.
