ppl who like this type of music would probably see a fire stinguisher in a gallery and take a picture of it thinking it was a piece of art. If you are still asking yourself why contemporary classical music doesn't reach a greater audience, just stop and think if people (who are not pretencious) would listen to this as a form of leisure and not just to pretend to be smart.

10 things you could have said that don’t shit on people for having different music tastes: “This piece is not for me.” “Why do people like this?” “DO people actually like this?” “This sounds pretty random, yet it is obvious this guy has chops. I’m not interested enough to find out if there is any organization to this because I don’t enjoy the results.” “Why would someone want to put in so much effort to learn this? What does the performer get out of this?” “This piece is 34 years old. Has contemporary classical music moved on from this?” “Are the rest of Ferneyhough’s pieces like this?” “This piece is 34 years old. How did this relate to other contemporary classical pieces 34 years ago?” “What the hell is a bone alphabet? Are these instruments supposed to remind me of playing on a skeleton?” “I don’t like this or want to understand it, but there probably are people who genuinely are into it. Cool, more for them, I guess. I’m going to use the world’s largest collection of uploaded videos to find something *I* am genuinely into.”

Nobody wonders why avant garde art doesn’t reach a wider audience, it’s kind of in the name. Also why do we care what “regular people” (are you implying that listeners of this music are “irregular”? What do you mean by that?) listen to, everybody should listen to what they enjoy and for a select group of people this is it. Stop worrying about what other people consider good art and start trying to find what you enjoy. Spreading negativity helps nobody.

listen if you're just mad that a college professor you dislike made you listen to Pentes or Zyklus or something, you can just say it. i've just noticed for a while now that when I listen to pieces like this, going down to the comment section apparently MANDATES that someone complain about it. I can understand disliking it, but the weird thing to me is people like you attaching a value statement about anybody involved or near contemporary music. there are plenty of composers and performers who are on either side of the Tonal / Atonal sphere, who not only work together, but collaborate, are friends, and are capable of seeing each other as human in spite of differences in musical interests. what's stopping you?

Pretentious Adjective Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed. In what way does someone liking music that you don't try to impress? Just because you don't enjoy something doesn't mean everyone else also doesn't and is just trying to... what? Try to impress who? I have never even heard of someone who thinks they are important for liking unusual music. Also, no one is asking why this isn't more famous. The goal of all art is not to be popular. If you think that everything has to appeal to the largest possible audience I guess that's your opinion, but the idea that just because everyone won't like something it is invalid or it shouldn't exist is ridiculous to me. Is there anything you enjoy is niche or doesn't appeal to everyone? Do you think that thing should be changed to appeal to more people, and that it matters less because it doesn't? A lack of popularity is not an intrinsic failing. I'm not trying to impress anybody, I don't think I'm important. People who make art like this aren't trying to be important and aren't trying to trick anybody, they simply love what they are doing. They are interested in creating something, instead of spending their time insulting other people. You don't need to like this, and no one's insulting you for not doing so, so don't insult others for liking it.
